“I learned about psychosomatic diseases and arthritis in particular from personal experience. For a number of years I was under psychoanalysis, a process by which the emotional deprivations of early childhood can be overcome and some degree of emotional maturity attained. Though I had rarely been sick before, this period I had so many psychosomatic illnesses – migraine headaches, sinus “infections,” “hay fever,” skin rashes, emotionally induced colds, arthritis, digestive distrubances, and many others – that my unconscious mind seemed determined to teach me there were causes of illness aside from poor nutrition. Each bout of sickness, however, lasted only a day or two.
When a kindly woman analyst took the role of loving mother to me, mentioned that I was angry because my mother had died, I felt her remark utterly ridiculous. Yet the day she told she was going to Europe, I developed severe arthritis; my jaws became acutely sore and every joint in both hands grew red, swollen, and excruciatingly painful. She helped me understand that the impending separation had unconsciously reminded me of being taken away from my ill mother when I was ten days old, an experience which, relived later under hypnosis to allow further understanding had been a horrifying one. I learned that a tiny baby’s emotions are raw and violent and that its reaction to suffering is animalistic and primative anger; and I was overcome with an intense desire to bite and claw. Next I learned that the emotion I as child had wanted to express but could not had to be expressed before the psychosomatic illness would clear up. My arthritis disappeared as soon as I expressed these emotions by biting on chewing gum and caramel corn and by clawing the eyes out of imaginary enemies and faces made with finger paints on foolscap…..
The unconscious mind – the mind of the child within us – purposely induces many psychosomatic illnesses to prevent the expression of negative emotions which would keep us from being loved. To the small child’s way of thinking, it is better to become immobile or to produce arthritis in one’s self, than to allow bottled-up anger to explode.” Let’s Get Well ~ By Adelle Davis
WHAT IS ARTHRITIS
“ARTHRITIS is a dis-ease that comes from a constant pattern of criticism. First of all, criticism of the self, and then criticism of other people. Arthritic people often attract a lot of criticism because it is their pattern to criticize. They are cursed with “perfectionism,” the need to be perfect at all times in every situation. ” YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE ~ Louise Hay
Before we look at the metaphysical causes, let’s look at what arthritis is.
Arthritis is a chronic degenerative disease that is sweeping across North America at an alarming rate. Well over three million people suffer from this disease and a large percentage of them are woman and children.
Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints accompanied with stiffness and pain. The primary cause of inflammation is from a buildup of toxins within the body fluids and tissues. Arthritis can escalate to severe degeneration of the joints, crippling and immoblizing movement.
There are many different kinds of arthritis based on the various symtoms and causes. The four common forms of arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.
Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms where cartilage and tissue deteriorates and hardens, sometimes creating painful bone spurs (a bony growth on normal bone). It affects the weight bearing joints, including the hips, knees, feet, fingers and spine.
Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks the joints. The first areas usually affected are the feet and hands…it can affect the wrist and fingers joints close to the palm as well as joints in the jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips knees, ankles and toes. Fatigue may also be a symptom of anemia which often accompanies rheumatoid arthritis. The joint pain and stiffness may also cause fever, loss of appetite and weight.
Gout can be caused by a severe acute pain or tenderness in a joint and often afflicts the big toe. Other areas affected can be the knees, ankles, feet, hands, wrists and fingers. As it progresses, the affected joints become inflamed, red, swollen, hot and extremely sensitive to touch. Gout was once known as the “rich man’s disease” as it’s been associated with rich food and alcohol. But in truth, it affects us all.
Other disorders of the joints and connective tissue include: lupus, Sjogren’s syndrome, Reiter’s syndrome, and ankylosing spondylitis.
“ARTHRITIS – Holding onto anger and resentment from the past. Carrying guilt, remorse and shame. Difficulty in forgiving self and others. Complaining about life. Worrying, but not wanting to make changes. Feeling stuck and limited. THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF YOUR BODY: The Essential Guide to Health and Wellness ~ Inna Segal”
WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS
If you asked this question to a medical doctor, he’d probably say it’s hereditary combined with an unhealthy lifestyle. If your work for example requires alot of heavy lifting, this may have created a great deal of stress (wear and tear) on your weight-bearing joints (knees, wrists, hips, etc.)
I believe that doctors are aware arthritis can be caused by an allergic reaction to foods…the problem is, they don’t always tell us. Some of the foods we eat all the time (e.g., sugar, caffeine, processed foods, alcohol, potatoes, tomatoes, animal fats, etc.) are the ones to which we could be allergic to. Fats and carbohydrates known to ferment in the body, create an environment that invites Candida albicans, unhealthy bacteria, fungal and parasite growth. Even toxic substances in the environment such as pesticides, artificial colorings and preservatives in foods, and chlorine and fluoride in the water can affect the joints, entering by way of the bloodstream triggering an arthritic reaction.
Why do allergies affect the joints in some people and not in others? Because different people have different areas of weakness. The joints, muscles and ligaments in the body share nerve centers with different organs in the body….so an irritation in a certain organ can cause a problem in a certain joint. Even emotional shocks and trauma such as fear, tension, stress, frustration, anger, and guilt all transit through the brain. The brain incapable of holding all this information, passes it on to a certain organ. When that organ becomes ‘chronically’ congested or weakened, it sends warning signals through the body via the nervous system. The problem is, we were either too busy or worried, upset, to pay attention to its warning signs.
In alternative healing, we look at the body energetically. When an illness or dis-ease strikes, something has caused a tremendous drain on the body’s energy reserves and immune system. The body’s own natural defences have broken down, opening itself to an invasion of toxins, viruses and bacteria, assaulting its system. Why?
Many of us don’t realize that every thought, word and action we say and do in life is transmitted via the etheric and nervous system to every organ, cell and molecule of the body. In less than a second your energy system starts working towards your choices and actions. If these are not congruent with your beliefs, goals and values, the result will be a physical or chemical imbalance in the body.
We are all motivated at a subconscious level to stay on the path of our purpose. When we deviate or refrain from this path, for whatever reason, our inner being starts working against us, alerting us to look inside ourselves and at what we are avoiding, denying or resisting. If we refuse to listen, we become anxious, stressed and plagued with fear and confusion. When we deny what we feel, we feel trapped and become ungrounded. Life feels chaotic.
With Arthritis we are torn at which direction to take. The area most afflicted in the energy body is our liver and gallbladder meridan. It is the energy of the liver that plans our next step and the direction we need to go in. It also houses family guilt and the concerns of our most deepest self. Guilt can make us very dependant upon another where every decision cannot be made without consulting our mentor or judge. It’s as if we don’t trust our own creative expression; perhaps as a child we weren’t allowed to make our own decisions. Now as an adult it’s difficult to constructively solve our problems. We feel like a flop as a human being and we start bingeing out on food and alcohol for comfort. But all that does is make us more stressed out and irritable. The liver becomes congested and unable to detox the body. Our digestive system becomes upset, the work of the intestines slow down, sapping our energy.
The gallbladder, located on the undersurface of the liver can get irritable and angry when things go screwy. It is the first organ to react (anxiously or angrily) when we change our habits or surrounded by negative energy.
If the liver and gallbladder are out of balance so too are our body and emotions. we experience extreme mood swings like withdrawing, then acting angrily. slamming doors. yelling, or even tracking mud in the house.
With arthritis the cartilage that covers the ends of the bone has a high water content (emotion) as well as a gel-like protein called collagen. If there is an imbalance between these two, the joints become stressed, inflamed or damaged. It’s as if the outer world and our inner world are a reflection of each other. And if this is true then our inner world is the main source of everything that happens to us in the outer world.
Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. “Overview Of Rheumatoid Arthritis
http://www.edgarcayce.org/are/holistic_health/data/prrart3.html
ARTHRITIS AND THE INTESTINAL TRACT
“A majority of arthritis patients have some degree of abnormal digestive function, such as indigestion and constipation, and leaky gut syndrome is also common. Common causes of leaky gut syndrome include a diet high in fried foods, processed foods, inorganic meat products, and simple carbohydrates as well as excessive alcohol intake. Inronically, medications such as NSAIDS often used to relieve symptoms of discomfort assoicated with arthritis, also cause severe leaky gut. Toxins, viruses, candida, and parasite infetation are sometime implicated as well.” An Alternative Medicine Guide to Arthritis ~ By Ellen Kamhi, Eugene R. Zampieron
It is quite possible that a compromised intestinal tract is where arthritis begins. If the filtration of the bowel wall is damaged, then improper proteins, fats, or sugars can begin to enter the circulation, causing toxins that would normally pass through the intestines to seep through the intestinal walls, entering the lymphatic system and invading the blood stream. The immune system, initially dispatched to get rid of the invaders somehow, instead starts destroying healthy tissue in the body. The attack can target any areas, including the joints, (rheumatoid arthritis) the thyroid gland, nerve cells (multiple sclerosis) and other organs of the body. These toxins can also increase cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood elevating platelet count and making the blood look more like tar instead of a liquid. Body fluids can only handle so many toxins before the lymphatic system and arteries becomes clogged. When this happens the body is at risk of gaining excess weight, developing heart disease or a stroke and even quite possibly cancer.
We know autoimmune diseases target different areas of the body, but the genes that affect the immune response are the same. In fact many autoimmune diseases have the same inflammatory molecules (cytokines) and immune cells that cause damage. So autoimmune diseases and the genes involved can run in families but may react against different organs and joints. Therefore, if autoimmune diseases run in your family, your sister could be troubled by hypothyroidism and you may be troubled by arthritis … all caused by the same gene. But we can’t just blame the genes, stress, anger, trauma, depression, repressed memories, loneliness, etc., can put such a strain on the immune system that it’s unable to protect the body from outside invaders.

METAPHYSICAL CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS
Arthritis; represents ‘oozing resentments’. You are so angry your joints become inflamed. Who or what is it that you resent so much? Louise Hay suggests this comes from feeling unloved.”
From: Compassionate Dragon Healing http://www.compassionatedragon.com/metaphysics5.html
I have not found the above statement to be totally true. There are so many other factors involved, you just can’t narrow it down to resentments and anger. For example, the hands are known to become rigid and deformed from arthritis .. metaphysically it looks as if the fingers are being pulled back out of shape. In fact it’s the body pulling back – it’s trying to tell you to pull back or withdraw from something – if you resist, severely enough, the body will withdraw emotional energies from what you are doing or are involved in. You will lose your grip.
Let’s look at what other healers, medical intuitives have to say…….
“Arthritis: The joints give us free and graceful movement, so arthritis is connected to our innermost feelings about the movement we are taking, what we are doing within that movement, or the direction we are going in. There may also be a sensation of the energy pulling back from moving forward, maybe out of fear of the movement, or because we would really rather be doing something or going somewhere different. This state also indicates self-criticism (stiffness), lack of self-worth, fear, anger (inflammation) and bitterness (pain). There can be a sense of being tied down, restricted, restrained and confined; also a developing inability to bend, to be mentally flexible or to be able to surrender. This can reflect a lack of self-trust as well as a hardening attitude towards life. These feelings are about ourselves, but rather than being acknowledged inwardly they are usually projected outwardly towards others. The part of the body being afflicted with arthritis indicates further information; see also entries on the specific joint and side of the body, Joints, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. ” Deb Shapiro: Your Body Speaks Your Mind
Daniel Condron’s “Permanent Healing”… “Arthritis (see also joints):
Mental Attitude: Restrictions placed upon Self. Release the past and come to terms with anger.
Suggestions for Improvement: push beyond the limitations you have imagined for your Self. Know what you want and don’t take no for an answer.
Joints (see also Arthritis, Elbow, Knee):
Mental Attitude: Mental restriction
Suggestions for Improvement: Eliminate for six months from your life and vocabulary: “I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t, I couldn’t, and I haven’t.” Replace them with I can, I will, I want to, I am able.”
Caroline Myss: “The Creation of Health”………….“Energy Analysis of Rheumatoid Arthritis: This illness is generated by a combination of chronic anger and resentment. Specifically, these emotions are generated because a person feels controlled by the emotional and/or psychological needs of someone with whom they are closely involved. Usually, the patient perceives the controlling source as a person who is emotionally very dependent, and, for that reason, the patient feels unable to challenge the imbalanced emotional dynamics of the relationship. In one sense, the patient often feels as though he or she is being held in emotional bondage with no alternative available for emotional release other than to internalize it. The patient perceives that his or her own movements are being restricted due to the demands of another person.”
Hmm, okay so with Caroline Myss, we’re back to anger and resentment with however, more of an explanation of how these emotions are generated.
RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (Added July 30, 2014)
“This is where the immune system starts attacking itself, attacking the collagen, which is the connective tissue in the joints, as if it were an invading antigen. It is known that this state worsens when we experience extra stress or tension. Rheumatoid arthritis indicates a deep self-dislike, perhaps due to shame or guilt; an inbred sense of worthlessness or self-criticism; as well as long-held anger, bitterness and stiff attitudes. We are attacking our own selves and the result is painful and limited mobility in moving or expressing ourselves freely. The joints are our means for fluid and graceful expression, so swelling and soreness here indicate a real difficulty in expressing that fluidity of movement in what we are doing and the direction we are going in. The rheumatoid arthritic personality is one that exhibits unassertive and inhibited behavior, is self-sacrificing, and unable to express strong emotions. That lack of expression then manifests physically as lack of mobility; it turns against itself and find expression in being inwardly critical and bitter. The BODYMIND Workbook ~ Debbie Shapiro
“The degree of seriousness is relative to the degree of emotional, mental and spiritual blockage. Generally, if you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, you are very self-critical; you have difficulty doing what you enjoy and asking others for help. Although you seem amenable enough, you let resentment build up while you wait for others to figure out telepathically what you need. You may even have thoughts of vengeance when others don’t figure it out. Just as this disease is paralyzing physically, it also indicates emotional paralysis.
Pay attention to the location of your symptoms. If the inflammation is in your hands, for example, you need to examine your attitude while working with your hands. Do you need help with work you are doing? Then say so. ~ Your Body’s Telling You Love Yourself ~ Lise Bourbeau
Everyone loved Jonie, a sweet elderly woman afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis. Her hands were gnarled, her spine looked twisted and she lived in constant pain. Why did this dear woman who spent her life caring for others and an avid church goer, suffer so much.
Although most healers won’t say the ‘actual’ cause of rheumatoid arthritis, they have said these clients ‘appear’ placid and gentle when first meeting them. Yet as the healing or reading takes place, there always seems to be, below these people’s awareness, anger, which he or she ‘learned’ to repress early in life.
Jonie would never ever tell anyone a lie, but as a child, she learned to lie to herself about her true feelings. She grew up in a rigid religious atmosphere and learned that to express herself forcefully was sinful. So she grew never expressing herself and believed she had no hostility. Her knowledge of the spiritual world was extensive but her awareness of her emotions were almost nonexistent. She had learned to repress or deny her hostility, but the inner conflict was always there gnarling at her soul, creating anxiety, which caused a metabolic imbalance and in time a crippling illness. (Rheumatoid arthritis may begin with swelling and morning stiffness..it takes a while for symptoms to accumulate)
Not only arthritis but many other physical disabilities occur from anxiety .. born out of our refusal to be honest with our emotions. Simply being aware of our inner conflict won’t always achieve healing. We first need to beware of the basic cause; second, we need to accept these emotions as valid and real at a feeling level and third, we need to ‘talk out’ our feelings in a proper setting. When we keep our emotions inside, Rheumatoid arthritis in later stages, can affect the chest and lung area, causing pain on taking deep breaths or feeling breathless…rheumatoid nodules have been seen on lung tissue itself, not just the lining. If your joints are swollen and red, and you feel pain when the joints are moved, it’s important to get diagnosed and start treatment quickly.
BODY/MIND
It has also been proven that our emotional and psychological states can influence the onset of an illness and more and more practicioners are looking at the body/mind together instead of separate. The question is how do we discover the cause and find the cure?
CASE STUDY # ONE
Fiona was forty-five years old when she came to the clinic for healing. She suffered from arthritis in her neck, hands and hip area. When we met, I extended my arm and hand to greet hers, it was met with a weak and weary handshake. I noticed Fiona’s wrist was very swollen and her hand cold to touch. At that moment a vision filled my awareness with painful images and emotional experiences. I wasn’t prepared for its onslaught and my body started to sweat, breathe heavily and react with a racing heartbeat and nauseous stomach. I wasn’t able to move, ….all this happened in seconds!
As I let go of Fiona’s hand, my body was trembling, weak and emotional. Thankfully I knew this reaction was from feeling and sensing Fiona’s energy. Silently thanking the information, I shook my hands, letting the emotions/feelings go. This is a must is you’re interested in healing or you’ll become too emotionally involved and won’t be able to help another.
Unconsciously, there was alot going on beneath the surface of Fiona’s guarded facade that inhibited and weakened her life force. When she spoke, her voice was timid, soft spoken and each sentence trailed into silence. Physically, there was extra padding around her hips, forming a hard protective shell around her sexual and creative area.
I saw a similar pattern to her energy and the energy of the couple in a former article in this blog called Spiritual Addiction = Self Destruction. Fiona had silenced the voice of her own body….she had closed the door to her own sensuality and closed down her own passion. Why?
From the many quick images I had seen earlier through touching her hand, I wondered if Fiona’s husband had been unfaithful to her? Was Fiona feeling deeply betrayed, hurt, angry? I didn’t present this until Fiona was comfortable and had let down her guard a little. When I did speak of the visual I saw earlier, Fiona sighed and fell silent for a moment, her face marked with sadness. She told me it was true, her husband had been unfaithful, making her feel old, fat, small and ugly. It had been a very dark time for her in which she felt life had very little meaning and joy. Although the affair was short-lived, Fiona feared losing her husband. She was too afraid to try facing life alone. So, instead, she gave in to his every whim, suppressing her own emotions and feelings.
“I don’t know why I’m doing this” said Fiona a short-time later, “I knew I’d never trust him again”.
When I scanned her body, another image I’d seen came forward, it was like a nightmare, very unsettling. It was an image of her in a bathtub. Her face was above water but her body was immersed in what looked like an eroding acid bath, bubbling and eating away at her body. Her facial area was untouched, her body a tangled mess of skin and bone. I kept this image to myself until I understood it and found a way to express it. It symbolically meant something but I wasn’t sure what at the time?!?!?
It wasn’t until I actually started the Reiki treatment that the realization of the above image spoke to me. I’m not sure if it was Fiona’s inner self, my intuition, my guides or inner wisdom who led me to it, but it was a Eureka!! a sudden realization that soared through my body and mind. Fiona was supposed to be going through a major transformation and she was doing everything in her power to stop it!
(When we are not in touch with our ‘need’ to change, others, close members (family, husbands, friends) will unconsciously ‘force’ this change by acting as ‘agents of disruption“!) Oh my gawd, that was it! I kept this to myself for the time being…..until I felt Fiona was ready to believe and accept it.
From my Reiki III manual…..
“The symptoms of dis-ease is also the symbol of spiritual separation and this is directly linked to resisting change in one’s life, emotions and/or thinking. When we refuse to change, the immune system of the body breaks down, the lymphatic system becomes blocked and conjested causing swelling as well as joint aches and mind confusion. But, to detox the body faster than it can acknowledge what’s actually going on, could overtax and cause the whole bodily system to shut down.”
The first Reiki treatment for Fiona, was the basic hands-on-healing, without the use of the emotional symbol Sei Hei Ki. This would be applied later, once Fiona was willing to go through her pain, not avoid it!
SUMMARY OF FIRST TREATMENT
When we don’t do what makes us happy, we eventually become angry and resentful. This sentence certainly fits with the three different metaphysical causes of arthritis. Fiona wasn’t displaying anger but it was definitely gurgling and bubbling deep inside. Instead she repressed her anger and frustration and poured out all her energy to being a submissive, obedient wife. Usually sexual betrayal creates volatile angry feelings. There certainly was a high voltage of energy wanting to come out but instead it was sizzling inside her. It created an acidic bath that was having a corrosive effect on her body.
Fiona was full of theories and excuses why she couldn’t do what she wanted to do…….Fiona was a ‘victim of love’. Victims of love deny themselves the very things they know would make them happy. They put others needs before their own and this was what Fiona was doing. And it always left her feeling drained and lethargic with empty hands and heart. It seemed her arthritis had come about from resisting, holding, tightening and compressing. This was an analysis of our first visit and I recorded my thoughts and feelings along with the findings.
The next visit, if Fiona chose to come back, would begin loosening and releasing the past so Fiona could reclaim her life-force. It wouldn’t be easy. First the anger of rage grief and jealousy had to come out. Then a long process of carefully listening inside for guidance and groping forward in the dark, one step at a time. If I had told her this on her first session, I probably would have never seen her again.
Not only was Fiona in deep physical pain, she also suffered from migraines and her body was starting to go into premature menopause. There was alot of work to be done and Reiki alone wouldn’t do it.

Excellent article. I am looking for someone in SE Michigan to help me with healing of a bit of Arthritis of my finger.
Hi Denise,
Hopefully a healer in the SE Michigan area will see this post. 🙂 If a name comes to mind, I’ll post it here. Sending you healing energy ❤
Thanks for the post. I am an RA sufferer and everything you say resonates with me, I lost my wife and have now lost contact with my children because I chose to remain loyal to my mother who is completely dependent on me. My life revolves around her and I feel that abandoning her will send her to an early grave. I don’t want this on my conscience and I feel unfulfilled in my life. On the onset of my illness I felt a lot of resentment for her as I felt she showed very little interest in my suffering and her comments were unhelpful.
Hi Charles,
Care-giving is challenging and can become more demanding as a parent becomes more frail and dependent upon us. I’m guessing your mom is still in her own home, who may at times be very demanding on your goodwill. It must be hard not receiving support from other family members, leaving you as the primary caregiver. The children which I imagine are grown, never visit their grandmother at all?
Do you have friends or government service providers? I realize, having gone through as a caregiver myself, that some services and/or support can show to be unpredictable or unreliable but these services are available to give you some much needed rest and to give you some relaxing time to yourself.
Giving your all to your mom without consideration to yourself can leave you feeling ‘powerless’. It’s like you can’t move forward or backward – you’re literally ‘frozen’ and just may be why you’re feeling unfulfilled at this time.
You mention in your message you ‘felt’ resentment to your mom in the past, when she showed little regard to your illness. Does this mean you’ve been able to let that resentment go? There is no one that beats us up more than ourselves and we can get really good at it.
I don’t want you to feel that you ‘have’ to take care of your mom to have a clear conscience. You are there because no matter how she treated you in the past, you love her with all your heart and soul. There’s nothing you can do to change the past and there’s no point in worrying about the future. The future will still come no matter how much we fret and worry about it. Don’t allow guilt or resentment to paralyze you or to give up on yourself. There’s a reason why all this is happening right now, even though you can’t see it. Use this time with your mom as an time of great personal growth and positive change for both of you. Consciously see her in a good light and send her good energy. Don’t let memories of the past cloud your feelings or your thoughts. Let everything that happened to you in the past gradually slide away from you so that you can live your life peacefully and happily now, which has been so graciously given to you to enjoy. When you do, you’ll feel a passion and a sense of purpose in your life, you’ll be in sync with the universe and with your intuition.
Sending you much love and healing ❤

Hi, are you able to give me any more information specifically about the spiritual lessons associated with gout? I’m a thirty year old woman, I don’t drink alcohol, am very healthy and I have gout! I can’t help but think that there must be more for me to learn from this condition than just lifestyle changes… Any help or insight will be greatly appreciated!
Hi Mae-Lin,
For those who don’t know what Gout is, it’s a form of arthritis that usually attacks a single joint, most commonly the big toe, as well as the hands, knees and elbows.
Gout is an accumulation of uric acid (which is usually removed in the urine) that can create formation of crystals in the movable parts of our body, known as the joints.
Metaphysically, accumulating uric acid in the body could mean we are holding on to negative emotions that should be released in the urine. This holding on begins to crystallize ‘fixing us’ in negative thought patterns and attitudes, making our ability to move or act become painful and awkward. Crystals also accumulate because there’s not enough blood in the joint areas to carry them away.
When we look at the causes of Gout, we also have to look at the kidneys, adrenals and bladder meridian. The bladder meridian in Chinese Medicine, when imbalanced, is said to embody the urge to “Flight” or run from changes or problems. The bladder meridian lies at the root of the spinal nerves which initiates all body process as well as physical actions. When the bladder is imbalanced, we can suffer from scanty or sometimes painful urination…think of the feeling of being ‘pressed in’ or ‘walled-in’ and unable to get out. Some of the metaphysical problems of the bladder, is fear, lack of confidence, nervousness, fear of being submerged or overwhelmed, strained nerves, and hypersensitivity.
The kidneys, too, are known as the seat of fear because the adrenals, that sit atop each kidney responds immediately when we’re excited, angry, panicked or stress.
Hopefully this helps to answer your question Mae-lin and give you some kind of guidance to what’s going on. Although we can look at the metaphysical cause of most illnesses, remember, we are each unique individuals with different pasts, different upbringings and social conditions.
Blessings,
ravenstar
Hola muy interesante informarse lo que explicas el post me encanta. un saludo.
[…] Article(s) on the Metaphysical causes of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are here […]
Great article. All what described as a cause of developing RA is very similar to what i had. My hands sickness is just began, and i believe at this stage I can be cured. Can you refer to effective healing via subconsious, meditation, etc.
many thanks. You do marvellous job.
Ella
Hi Ella,
Whenever you become aware of your body and its position (meditation/visualization), you immediately experience relaxation and a flow of energy because you are listening to it more closely than before. You will become aware of your presence, your form and your communication with your body and your surroundings. At first you may be restless and feel as though you are thinking thousands of thoughts…don’t worry… yout subconscious is trying to remind of you of things you need to do, write them down , acknowledging you will take care of them afterwards…this will help to relax you.
As you begin any type of visualization or meditation you may notice old or hidden pain rising from your subconscious. If you find you suddenly feel angry, depressed or frightened, try to gently allow yourself to feel the experience without resistance and let go of trying to make sense of your feelings.
*Relaxing Meditation
*This is an adaptation of a meditation from an excellent book “Healing with the Mind’s Eye” by Michael Samuels, M.D.
Find a comfortable place to sit or lie down. Letting the chair bear the weight of your body as the ground beneath bears the weight of the chair, supporting you as it supports everything that rests on it. Take a full deep breath and breathe out fully and completely … and again, feel your abdomen with life-giving energy, hold …. and again breathe out fully and completely. And one more time take a deep breath in, allowing your abdomen to rise as you inhale and fall as you exhale. As you breathe allow yourself to relax. Let your consciousness float behind your nostrils and feel the air going in and out of your nose. Now shift your consciousness to your feet and allow them to relax. Concentrate on feelings of tingling, buzzing, pulsing, warmth or coolness, heaviness or lightness. Now let your ankles relax. Allow the feelings of relaxation to spread up the back of your legs. Now allow your calves to relax. Continue to breath in and out slowly, and let the feelings of relaxation deepen. Allow your knees to relax and the muscles of your thighs.
While you’re relaxing let your mind float free, releasing any worries or anxieties you may have. Release them – you don’t need them – and let them drift away. If you wish, you may watch them float off as you exhale. You can name the particular worry, and see it slip away as a bubble, a dark area, or a bird. All you’re doing here is allowing the body to relax, which it knows how to do by itself.
Now allow your pelvic area to relax, Feel the relaxation in your genitals, anus and buttocks. Release the tension that everyone carries in their pelvis. Now let your abdomen relax. Allow it to relax as it rises and falls, allow your breathing to take place by itself. Allow the muscles of your chest to relax. Let your breath go in and out smoothly, allowing your breathing to take place by itself. Let your heartbeat be smooth and regular. Let your mind float over your entire body. Concentrate on feelings of buzzing, vibrating, tingling, lightness or heaviness. You may notice that your body feels as if it were getting larger or that space seems to be expanding. You may also notice that the inside of your body seems hollow and large and that your entire consciousness seem quiet and deep.
Allow the feelings of relaxation that you are experiencing spread to your shoulders. Let your shoulders relax; let them drop. Now let our upper arms relax; let them drop. Now let your upper arms relax and let the feeling spread to your lower arms and hands. Feel the sensations of tingling and numbness spread through your hands, and let your mind wander back over your body, down to your feet, deepening the relaxation through your whole body. Now let your neck relax. Let the big muscles that support your head loosen and lengthen. Now let the feelings of relaxation spread up to our head. Relax your scalp. let your jaw drop, let the muscles around your relax, and let your forehead relax.
Now concentrate on a place on top of your head. You may feel tingling or buzzing there. As you take a breath, allow energy to flow into your body through that area and allow your body to expand. Imagine that millions of moving particles of light come into your body through the top of your head, go down along your spine and out around to envelop your whole body. Enjoy these feelings of relaxation. It almost seems as if your body disappears, and your consciousness is floating outside your body, in front of your eyes.
Now direct your attention to any area of your body that feels tense or that bothers you. Let them relax; let them drop. Allow the energy coming in through your head to flow to those areas, move around them and caress them. Allow the energy to go through them and fill them with light. Remain in this wonderfully relaxed state as long as you wish.
When you wish to return to your everyday state, gently move your feet and count slowly from one to three. You will return to your everyday state, relaxed, comfortable and full of energy. Your body will feel as if it is in a comfortable healing space. Each time you do this exercise you will relax more deeply and more easily. The feelings of relaxation will deepen, and the whole exercise will become more and more pleasurable. ♥

Hi …..
To keep your personal life private, you can email me at ravenstarshealingroom@gmail.com as this is an open forum and others will be able to read both our comments.
There are pressure points which I’d like to share with you that can help your knee and ankle pain and even your toe. Massaging the pressure points may stop the pain you are experiencing and help you exercise and stretch again. I’ve added websites with these pressure points for you to look at the bottom of this comment.
Metaphysically our joints can carry unresolved pain and trauma from the past. They can be stuffed with angry emotions especially when the stomach, liver and gallbladder meridian are involved (all these meridians flow around the knees). This isn’t the actual organs that’s causing the problem but the energy running to and from them. The knees represent our ability to bend, to be giving and to be spontaneous. With you husband joining you at the gym, your energy has literally pulled back and unable to move freely. Your knee problems may be slowing you down so that you become aware of your emotions and work through them, rather than simply stuffing them down because you don’t have the time or too afraid to work through them. When our mind is troubled it sends pain to the weakest link in our body.
The ankles, similar to the knees have an immediate relationship with the direction we are going in and our ability to ‘cope’ with that direction. They also represent the support we get, spiritually and mentally as well as the beliefs we stand on. If you’ve ever twisted your ankle then you know when it gives way, the whole body collapses. Is it possible you’re unconsciously wanting to shift your direction and straighten out the twists in your life. Usually we want to do this when we’ve experienced an unexpected change, and you seem to be going through a change right now.
The fingers on your hands could indicate a withdrawal of energy, especially if we feel we are losing our grip with something. Our hands are our means of creating, touching and connecting with others … without touch babies feel rejected and unwanted.
Also, as we grow older, we become more vulnerable to strain and damage, and as you know, our bodies don’t mend as quickly. Our legs are strong in relation to the rest of our body and our muscles work best with steady, long-lasting exercise. Women have relatively more fat then men and less glycogen (the body’s energy reserves) which means our enzyme systems are geared towards the use of fat as fuel. The male body is geared for more rapid intensive work, while the woman is suited for more extended exercises.
We need to look at the body/mind/spirit as a whole. First things you can do to cleanse your body is drink plenty of water. Grapefruit juice, lemon or lime juice in water is very cleansing for the Solar Plexus area. Mangos, berries, papaya, guava and fresh pineapple are all good to cleanse your system as are dandelion greens, red radishes and fennel. You may want to look at Milk Thistle, a herb that works especially on the liver and gall bladder.
Aromatherapy oils….these are good for joint pain.
Base oil 25ml (almond oil, coconut oil, grapeseed oil, etc;)
mix in:
Blackpepper 5 drops
Chamomile 5 drops
Rosemary 5 drops
Marjoram 5 drops
The very act of moving slowly and deliberately, is what your body wants you to do now. It may not have so much a bearing on your past but actually preparing you for the coming future. Your body is talking to you bela. It’s wants you to slow down and listen….

Hi. I just started searching for metaphysical causes of my “degenerative disc disease” of the cervical spine, and really appreciate coming across your blog. Many years ago my ex-husband tried to control me (once) by trying to choke me unconscious (he and his brothers used to do that, after their mother died). Now I have neck pain and stiffness. Someone made me aware that the jealousy of a close mate, and my being very open to his energy, was causing me physical pain. I just wondered if you have any ideas on what I can do to relieve this? I sure do ‘get’ that I have stored and repressed a lot of anger, resentment, guilt, and desire. Thanks. I am amazed that you respond to replies.
Hi Cass,
Anxiety, jealousy, anger, creates stress that tends to strike the muscles in the upper back and neck. Stiffness in the neck can cause the cervical bones to go out of alignment by restricting the circulation and nerve energy, which may eventually result in rhuematism an/or cervical problems. The neck is one of our most vulnerable areas and when stressed could indicate an inability to express what we’re feeling, blocking off our communication. The neck is considered by many spiritual disciplines as the gateway or bridge that connects the mind and body through which the breath must pass.
Problems in the neck area can also be caused by restrictive breathing. The muscles that lift the rib when we breathe deeply into the abdomen are the sternocleidomastoid muscles and the upper trapezius muscles on the back of the neck – shallow breathing can result in neck strain and chronic neck tension – and – the most common cause of headaches is neck tension, especially the excessive pull on the base of the skull where the upper trapezius attaches.
The human body is designed to discharge 70 percent of its toxins through breathing. The other 30 percent is thorugh sweat, elimination and urination. If you’re breathing is not operating at peak efficiency, you are not ridding yourself of toxins properly. And if toxins are released through the breath, than other organs in your body, such as the kidneys will have to work overtime and this sets the stage for a number of illnesses.
These are some simple exercises to increase the flow of oxygen and open the throat. …
ENERGETIC CHI (an adaptation of a meditation by by Belleruth Naparstek
This exercise get the electromagnetic chi flowing through your body, it’s what I call an all-purpose wellness visualization. Although you can sit through this visualization you also might want to stand or slowly move around .. it’s up to what suits you you best.
You may want to start by shaking your body a little .. then find a comfortable way to sit or stand. You might want to gently sway back and forth to find your sense of gravity.
Letting your eyes relax take a nice full breath and breathe it out as completely as you can.
Then do this again, taking a slow even breath and breathing it out.
And again breathe in but this time imagine you inhaling a magical supply of healing energy with the in-breath, seeing sparkling microdots of color or colors or hearing a subtle hum as it dances into your body or feeling it move through.
As you exhale, imagine this energy flowing all through your body .. moving into every corner … all the way to the tips of your fingers to the ends of your toes … just feeling this tingling energy traveling through your body
And again breathing it in and release it all through your body with the exhale, feel the delicate dancing presence of this energy as it moves through your body…
And again breathing it in and as you exhale feeling it move toward any place that might be a little denser or darker or heavier – any place that might feel blocked or uncomfortable or tight .and sensing it gently surrounding those places .. softening them .. loosening them … massaging and opening them.
And feeling the heavier places beginning to shift and move … like a logjam beginning to break free.. slowly at first .. then faster and easier as each new breath helps it along .gently and easily .. neither pushing or pulling … just a gentle invitation to float along free.
And again take a deep breath and this time making a sound with the out breath, loud or soft, high or low, whatever wants to come out .. whatever feels right and letting the tone fill your body .. vibrating and humming all through you .. as you feel the energy of it … softening and releasing any pockets of painful feelings stored in the body … beginning to feel the achy, sore, weary places start to shift and move..
And again breathing in deeply and fully ..opening the throat and toning again .. maybe this time a little louder or softer, higher or lower, whatever feels right for you .. feeling the vibration and sound releasing your energy.
And one more time… take a rich full, deep breath .. dropping your jaw, opening your throat and letting whatever tone that wants to, come out with the exhale .. rich and deep and strong or soft and subtle and high .. whatever feels right .. feeling the vibration move through your body .. healing soothing and energizing from head to toe.
So simple but power this visualization is like recharging your batteries … feeling the difference on the inside .. subtle but resilient and strong .. .. and continuing to focus your awareness on the sensation of this energy moving inside your body now .. perhaps remembering how good it feels to connect with yourself…
You can use this simple exercise whenever you need to recharge or renew your body and spirit … knowing you’ll be better for this .. and so you are…

Yoga – Roaring Lion Pose
http://b4tea.blogspot.ca/2011/06/roaring-lion-pose-yoga-benefits-how-to.html
The Lion pose stimulates the lymphatic system releasing toxins in the body as well as activating the adrenal glands bringing your whole body into balance. When the eyes roll upward this stimulates the thalamus, hypothalamus and pituitary glands in the brain, which in turn balance the entire endocrine system. Sticking out the tongue releases toxins in the tonsils and stimulates the thyroid at the base of throat speeding up your metabolism which helps to speed up your whole digestive system. And it clears the head when you’re confused about something.

very correct n on point…
I’ve been applying AJ Miller’s teaching to help me emote out the hurts at the root of ALL my physical symptoms. In two years I’m off all my Meda and my blood labs are normal. Now whenever I have pain I know my Soul is ready to express some pain I’ve suppressed and I look up the “spiritual meaning of ______ whatever”. That’s how I found your site. Thank you so much for your generous and insightful sharing!
Hi Omisarah,
Thank you for your kind comment and introducing the teachings of AJ Miller to myself and the many individuals who have read and ventured to this blog. The journey to healing lies within us all. Each one of us holds our own special key to activate our own natural healing power through the mind-body-spirit connection. My goal is simply to help you re-discover and re-activate these healing powers within your self. ♥

Can you give a link on the teachings of AJ Miller which you applied and how you applied them in order to heal your physical issues?
Thank you
Hi Angelique,
It was Omisarah, who applied AJ Miller’s teachings. If by chance Omisarah, returns to this site, I’m sure they’ll respond to your request. In the meantime, googling the teachings of AJ Miller, may offer you some guidance.
Warmly,

This is a link to a playlist I created with AJ’s videos about physical health. I also recommend going to his website divine truth.com and watching those posted videos.
My process was after I had been studying this material for about 6 months, a friend who had been part of a community in Alaska that practiced “re-evaluation co-counseling” taught it to me. We met every week and emoted about what was happening in our law of attraction. (AJ has a video about that and about the Law of Cause and Effect, which are the two that got me launched into this work.) This included all physical symptoms and chronic problems. The goal was to notice what the presenting emotions were that were triggered by the Law of Attraction, feel them but with the intention that the presenting emotion (called “capping” or “effect” emotions) were just portals to enter in order to dive down to find and feel the CAUSAL emotion–the emotion you “become as a child” to fully discharge, express, emote out. It’s like taking off the 20 mattresses in the Princess and the Pea story–all our lives we manage our suppressed emotions by putting another mattress over the hurt. This emoting work is about feeling away the mattress layers, locating that pea and eating it, digesting it, and thereby releasing it. For the first 15 months the first causal emotions I had to deal with were the ones I had worked hardest to suppress and avoid. After that “good” emotions, like hope and curiosity, soul desires and happiness–these began to surface as well. It is essential that you do not judge any emotion as bad or good. “No emotion is negative unless it is suppressed.”
Just yesterday I learned a different approach to emoting. It’s called “Focusing” and was started in the 60’s. It is a gentle process of deep listening to your body until you get the message that your physical body is trying to tell you. It can be done alone or in pairs, but I recommend doing it in pairs to start with.
Through all this time of emoting I continued to learn from AJ’s videos. Before this, I was in talk therapy for 25 years, on heavy antidepressants. I got bundles of insights but no changes at the soul (causal) level. Now, only 2 years later, my life is drug free and satisfying. My Law of Attraction doesn’t need to bring me such hard messages anymore, even though I am still getting triggered about stuff I need to release. I feel that the Focusing approach is going to be very powerful. I am so grateful to have been guided to AJ’s material. He offers it all free. I’ve never met him, nor any one else who has studied him except for the people I introduced to the concepts. I am a teacher and my goal is to spread this knowledge to whoever is ready for it. I studied and applied the Abraham-Hicks teachings for 12 years. It rarely worked and now I know why.
Enjoy exploring! Truth sets you free.
Sarah
After 18 years of my sufferings in RA with lots of degeneration being occurred at several joints like knee, hip, elbow etc., I just left searching my disease in Google because I knew the search will end up in futility!! Just today, I tried to search with the keyword “RA spiritual meaning” & I got all the answers!! Thank you very very much for such a beautiful piece of writing. Happy to know myself & my disease

I am busy going through a divorce. He initiated it. He relocated to another city. I didn’t want it because of the children. However a year down the line I feel liberated. I feel I am connecting with myself again. I am fearful of the financial implications of divorce but realise it is a small price to pay for finding yourself again. Whilst married I developed urticaria and angioedema. I had to take an antihistamine every night. Within months of living in a different house to my husband it went away. The divorce is not through. I recently discovered I have psoriasis on my scalp and the very beginning of rheumatoid arthritis. The description of the kind of person who gets RA in your blog reminds me of my husband. I feel like I am exorcising his personality through my body.
Is this possible? Or am I in such denial about my repressed emotions and have projected them all onto him?
I am an artist. Free spirited as I CAN be with two children to feed and clothe.
Many mysteries surround people and why they marry who they do. It is just not nice to have this pain in my joints….maybe when the divorce is eventually over I will be free to heal? Biography becomes biology until the 7th generation…. I really need to release the thought patterns that are eroding my cartilage.
Hi Tania,
Separating and divorcing isn’t easy. When it happens, we fight it, because we’ve been with our partner a long time and ‘believe’ there’s still good things about the marriage to keep it going. And, there’s the children, ‘we should stay together for the children’. It isn’t until we’ve been away from that person for a while, that we realize how closed-off and limited we’d become. As well, our true thoughts and feelings start emerging that were hidden before. We had closed our heart to protect ourselves..
Metaphysically both urticaria and angioedema is caused from having to control or suppress emotions – feeling anxious about revealing true feeling because you could be abandoned or rejected by others. The emotions/feelings that were suppressed become so strong that they are pushed to the surface. Each red spot is a raw emotion that hasn’t been expressed.
The quote below is from an article on this blog Metaphysical Cause of Psoriasis
it may help you to understand the metaphysics of psoriasis a bit more…
““Psoriasis is like a volcano erupting from the pressure of unseen forces just below the surface of a person’s life. The body is releasing fear, frustration, anger and other toxic emotions. The painful, itchy psoriasis flare-up is a strong signal of rebellion against the level of stress the person is experiencing.” Deadly Emotions ~ Don Colbert”
Our thought forms can limit who we are and what we become, or they can act as a catalyst prompting us forward in our lives. Our thoughts influence our character, shape our attitudes, determine our behaviours, affect our spirituality, and even influence the immune system. Your thinking determines whether you will be happy or sad most of the time.
“..maybe when the divorce is eventually over I will be free to heal?”
Why wait until the divorce is over? You can start now! On the psoriasis blog, there are tips on healing this autoimmune dis-ease. There is also a mention of Psoriatic arthritis, and links to sites to help you heal. My son has psoriasis of the scalp and saffron tea has been a great help to calm down the red scaly patches.
“The description of the kind of person who gets RA in your blog reminds me of my husband. I feel like I am exorcising his personality through my body.
Is this possible? Or am I in such denial about my repressed emotions and have projected them all onto him?”
It’s possible that the metaphysical cause psoriasis and rheumatoid arthritis is telling you , you’ve become too unsure of what you ‘feel’ about things. Maybe you’ve spent so much time trying to be someone else that you have trouble getting in touch with your own beliefs and responses? Have you lost touch with your heart’s desire?
Artists are known to be self-expressive, charismatic, positive, sensual, intelligent, communicative and funny. However, some lack grounding because they exist or live in the higher creative centers, while the first three chakras representative of life-consciousness are denied. This can cause a lack of consistency, focus and organization, especially when their minds feel scattered. Inside they can feel empty and depressed.
“Depression is anger turned inward. It is also anger that you feel you do not have a right to have. For instance you may not feel it’s okay to be angry at your parent or spouse or employer or best friend. Yet you are angry. And you feel stuck. That anger becomes depression….
I don’t care how spiritual you are, you have got to wash your dishes every now and then. You can’t let the sink pile up with dirty dishes and say, “Oh, I’m metaphysical.” The same with your feelings, if you want to have a mind that flows freely then clean up your inner mental dirty dishes. Louis L. Hay THE POWER IS WITHIN YOU
When we turn our anger inward, we fill our time with busywork and routine in the hopes to push through difficult situations without being affected by them. We also lower our standards and try to blend in with others… this increases our lack of feelings and inner emptiness causing more depression.
I’m not sure if this speaks to you or not, but if it does, then you need to let go of the belief that your ‘sense-of-value’ is dependent on the positive vibes of others. Only then can you turn inward (with patience and compassion) and heal the hurt and shame beneath your awareness (lower chakras). Once you do, you’ll be able to express your emotions freely without worrying what others might think of you. Healing within gives you the option to BE however you want to be, without judging/cricticizng yourself.
Don’t wait until after the divorce, this is a cop-out. Start now, to reconnect with your heart ♥

This information is mind blowing!!! I stumbled upon this article while searching psychic reasons for arthritis. My husband is going through a period of joint pain and stiffness symptoms associated with arthritis so I began to do some research. Every point made in the examples such as resentment, anger, feelings of being stuck, child hood trauma ALL the examples are in correspondence with him. Its amazing!! Thank you for posting this info I will continue to do more investigative research until he is healed. Thanks again!
Hi Leah Ann,
Thank you so kindly for your very kind and thoughtful comment. Your husband is very lucky to have such a beautiful, caring soul, at his side. I wish you and your husband all the best as you continue to research and learn more about his condition. If you need answers to questions you’re unable to find, don’t hesitate to reach out here again.

After reading this article I realized that most or all of it resonated deeply with me. I don’t know what my next steps will be, but I believe that my guides pointed me to your article. I want to open myself to “hearing” my guides and trusting myself, which I have never done. I think it may be a difficult process but I will continue to seek more guidance. Thank you for this.
Hi Carol,
I do believe that at this moment, you are in sync with your spirit and with your purpose .. your purpose is to create life out of who you are and who you are becoming.
Making decisions intuitively or through our guides works best when we become attuned to our energy body. Our life purpose and our power is revealed where we take a stand .. and .. where we choose. Not only do we intuitively listen to our guides/inner-self, but we also take our first step towards becoming who we are meant to be. We have to show up in life, and being willing to say .. “This is who I am” and then look for the support that follows.
Most of us have inners struggles about what to do, with conflicting voices that pull us back and forth among fear and confusion and clarity. Why? Because we are continually required to grow beyond the boundaries we’ve inherited and established. To live a fulfilling life we need to have both stability and growth. The voice of stability wants to stay in the familiar. The voice of growth urges us to venture into the unknown.
LISTENING TO THE INTUITIVE VOICE – INNER GUIDANCE
The ego’s goal of the ego is to keep us small, safe and accepted by others. So, how do we know the ego or intuition is talking to us .. there are so many books and sites that tell us how to listen to our intuition, but many of them are confusing.
This is a much easier way of listening to your intuition/guides ..
a) Intuition is quiet but persistent. What thoughts keep coming back about something? There is no urgency with these thoughts … but they come into your mind .. when doing the dishes, reading a book, shopping, laundry, etc.
(The ego’s voice demands choices be made now especially if it fears something will disappear.)
b) Intuitive messages point you in the direction of self-development .. while the ego says ‘why bother’, or ‘it’s too much trouble’ .. ‘it costs too much’.
(The ego rationalizes away action and defends the status quo)
c) Intuitive messages are simple .. ‘go back to school’ .. ‘you need to write’ .. it’s specific and useful.
(The ego keeps rehashing the same old ground justifying why you shouldn’t do this or shouldn’t do that).
d) Intuition comes directly and clearly in your mind. (The ego is indecisive and anxious.)
e) The intuitive voice moves you out of your comfort zone, but you know in your heart it’s guiding you to do the right thing. (The ego loves to tell you horror stories).
f) Intuition gives you one step at a time .. (the ego sets up contradictions and creates no-win solutions.)
Once we become attuned to some of the beliefs and behaviors that are keeping us stuck, we can walk through the gateway of our choice and begin an adventure of trust and enjoyment.
It may take time for you to become familiar with the way your own mind works, and the meaning of your own personal library of images, sensations, and symbols.
There is also an article on this site … Learning to Work and Communicate With Your Spirit Guide(s) that may help ..
All the best to you Carol..

I got severe arthritis from chemo. (along with neuropathy, heart & lung problems). These are common after-effects of chemo. I wish to God I had never gone with chemo. Worst decision of my life. I’m not at all critical, except of myself. Just suffering from medical science’s horrible, Medieval treatment. My sister died from misdiagnosis by doctors who told her she was “stressed out” and needed to quit her job. Wrong. She was only 38. My mother was an RN so I had always trusted the medical community.
Hi Dixie,
I’m so sorry you’ve had to go through so much pain and agony from the after-effects of chemotherapy. And my deepest condolences to the loss of your sister, she was way too young to leave this world.
Criticism of One-Self
Have you always had an internal drive to be perfect? Were you heavily criticized when you were young, or punished for not making the grade? If this is true, then you may believe that ‘you always have to better than you are’.
Most people who are self-critical have set high standards for themselves. They also work very hard at improving themselves, intellectually, emotionally, financially and spiritually. But it’s never enough. And they beat themselves up daily, becoming very strict with themselves. Consequently at such times, others may perceive you as overly rigid and even perfectionistic.
The wound of never being able to measure up can be extremely frustrating which can put a lot of pressure on your body, causing it to tighten-up so much that it affects your connective tissue, nerves, muscles and lymphatic system. All this can affect the health of your body/mind and spirit.
To help you become less strict with yourself ..
Discover foods that strengthen your immune system and fuel your body/mind;
Be aware of your tendency to push yourself beyond your limits; Leave time for play or something that’s pleasurable to you; many of your inspirations will come from your sense of playfulness.
Let others help you even if they don’t approach solutions the same way you do; this may even help change your perception of some things;
Take time to notice when you’re troubled or upset; if your journal, write for about 15 minutes what you’re frustrated or annoyed at. Doing this will help reduce your stress significantly;
Realize you’re never going to get rid of the parts of yourself that you don’t like; repressing them will only have them reappear much stronger later;
Stop trying to improve yourself and learn to be comfortable with who you are.
Yoga, or other form of gentle stretching exercises will help to keep your body supple and you’ll become aware of where you’re holding more tension in your body.
All the best to you Dixie, I truly believe you have the power within you to heal yourself.
Hugs,

Hi Ravenstar, thank you for your kindness. Yes, I was held to super high standards as a child. My brother & I often cleaned the trailer (and later, rental houses) after my parents’ huge, wild “cocktail parties” in the 50s & 60s.
I was told frequently by my father “You are a genius” but by Mom “You aren’t worth a hill of beans” (because I would rather study/read than learn to cook & clean). I put myself through college & got 3 degrees but my mother called that “a lot of malarkey.” No matter how well I did in school/jobs etc. my mother was super critical. Dad (like me) had manic depression (I was diag. age 45 & he in his 70s after my diagnosis). But in manias, we both accomplished extremely highly (Dad has a mountain peak & a glacier named after him in Antarctica, he was the first to summit both during 8 months living in igloos with his mapping team–1961/62) I have had over 50 poems published, one in an anthology that was on the NY Times “Best of the Small Presses” for 8 weeks. Although Dad was impressed, Mom told me “poetry is a load of Crap.”
I got OCD, cleaning my apt or home in the morning before work & at night after 10-12 hours at work.
Getting good meds did help so I no longer do that but my entire body cringes once a week when I make my “duty call” to my mother. Dad has passed away so even though he would beat me during depressions (he was prone to rages during his depressions) I do miss his encouraging words about my writing.
I chose Not to have kids because I didn’t want to be like my father (praising me one minute/beating me the next) or my mother (constant, endless, daily criticisms).
I still hear their voices in my head if I mess something up, even small things like knocking over a cupful of pens. I use an ASMR app to calm myself.
I’ve been trying to eat healthily since 1982 when I moved to Boulder, CO but Dad’s (and his family’s) love for Southern Fried Everything is in my bones (he was born/raised in Georgia but left as soon as he could, he hated the prejudices & “ignorance” there)
So you are right about this & I will print out & HEED your good suggestions
Thank you so very much. I am nearly 70 now but Better Later Than Never
Oh, meant to mention: I’ve danced & have run all my life for fun & it’s good exercise. I have hiked a Lot here in Colorado (Long’s Peak over 14,000 feet 3 times). And during my husband’s & my infrequent (every 5-8 years) vacations. We’ve hiked all over Iceland, Scotland, Germany, Ireland, Kenya….
Took up Tai Chi 4 years ago but then broke ankle badly so can’t do that without falling over. Same with yoga (I took a year of yoga but it wasn’t for me).
My husband & I used to work out at the gym for 30 min./5x/week but my broken ankle/broken leg prevent me from meandering around all the equipment & people. I have extreme fear of falling now outside our well-carpeted home.
I got Phy. Therapy for 6 weeks but will probably never be able to walk right, the ankle was secured with plates & many screws so it can’t turn left or right or rotate any more. Oddly, 3 people in my family had the same injury during covid! I wonder what that might mean!
Hi Dixie,
Thank you for being so honest with your feelings and expressing them so openly. From what I can gather you and your husband were quite energetic when both young and enjoyed traveling and hiking literally all over the world. What wonderful memories you must have.
You asked a question, regarding 2 people in your family (including yourself) having the same or similar (ankle) injury during COVID.
The Covid virus has literally exhausted our body, minds and spirits. Not only that the cost of living has gone up, the government has been imposing on our private lives, the vaccines are out of control and we have many unforeseen challenges ahead of us. Especially the environment; our Earth is falling apart.
Why did you three break your ankles?
The feet represent stability and security, as well as giving us the ability to step ahead and make progress through our lives. During Covid the ankles have ‘tried’ to assist us in all our up and downs, trying to stay ‘flexible’ and ‘easy-going’.
To move forward the ankles rely a lot on ‘sincerity’ and ‘truthfulness’ within our relationships (partners, friends, family, etc.). They also represent the ease through which the mind/body is able to move through life.
It’s possible the three of you could gain a great deal of knowledge and wisdom sharing what each of you were thinking and doing before your ankles were compromised? And, you may also discover the answer to your question.
All the best,
