Psoriasis is believed to be an autoimmune disorder, caused by too many ‘excited’ T-cells being produced in the skin. T cells perform many tasks in the body, including recognizing and destroying different antigens in the body. All this is done to keep the blood clean and free of debris. Normally these are cleared from the body as the blood flows through the liver.  In fact, our bodies house several organs (intestines, kidneys, liver, lungs, skin) that help detoxify and remove harmful toxins.  When these get backed up they interfere with the body’s main plumbing system, the lymphatic system.

“The lymphatic system includes lymph vessels and nodes, thymus gland, tonsils and spleen. It’s really a network of tubing that drains waste products from tissues, produces disease-fighting white blood cells (lymphocytes) and antibodies, and carries the bulk of the body’s waste from the cells to the final elimination organs. Experts call the lymphatic system a secondary circulatory system, because it assists the bloodstream with millions of tiny ducts that collect tissue fluid not needed by the capillaries or skin and returns it to the heart for recirculation, because special filtering lymph nodes remove infective organisms, so your lymph system is also a key to your body’s immune defenses.

Liver health is a key to lymphatic health. The liver produces the majority of lymph, and lymph a major route for nutrients from  the liver. The integrity of the lymph system is dependent on immune cells in the liver that filter out harmful bacteria and destructive yeasts .….. The valves of the lymph system move the waste-filled fluids to be flushed and filtered. But since there is no pump as there is with the heart, lymph circulation depends solely upon our breathing and muscle movement. Physical exercise and diaphragmatic deep breathing are critical to lymph cleansing and to healthy immune response.” Linda Page ~ Detoxification: Programs to Cleanse, Purify & Renew

The normal life expectancy of an average skin cell is approximately 28 days (curiously this coincides with the cycle of the Moon) but with psoriasis sufferers their immune system is so hyperactive, that cytokines cause the skin cells to produce way too quickly, maturing in as little as three to six days before shedding off the surface of the skin. As all this is happening, a good deal energy has been diverted from other parts of the body to focus on the skin.  This may be why certain areas of the body are comprised—psoriasis has been linked with candida, cardiovascular disease, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis, hypertension, and high cholesterol—all inflammatory conditions.

WHAT IS PSORIASIS

Psoriasis (Heat in the Blood) is a chronic, inflammatory disease that can take on the colors of fire-engine red, pale pink or even purplish.  Reproducing ten times faster than normal skin, it appears as red scaly patches of skin topped by silvery scales that appear on different parts of the body such as the elbow, knees, scalp, back and other places too.  In the beginning patches may be small then increase in size and number.   Some food triggers for psoriasis are: alcohol, tobacco, garlic, ginger, cinnamon, hot peppers and excessive coffee.

Psoriasis is sometimes combined with arthritis, especially rheumatoid which has been referred to as psoriatic arthritis, but there are many other kinds of psoriasis—the most common is plaque psoriasis which we mentioned in the previous paragraph—other forms are:.

a)Guttate (dot like (teardrop) lesions) sometimes occurs after strep throat
b)Pustular (pustules over inflamed skin – localized, affecting palms of hands, soles of feet)
c) Inverse (intense inflammation and little scaling in body folds)
d) Erythrodermic (intense sloughing and inflammation of the skin)

“… psoriasis is an indication that you are uncomfortable in your own skin and have a desire to turn over a new leaf. You don’t feel recognized or acknowledged for who you really are and suffer from a degree of identity disorder wanting to take on a personality other than your own. You are having difficulty accepting who you are in this life. The message your body is sending you is that you need to love and accept yourself in all your humanness, with all the flaws, weaknesses, and fears as well as talents, abilities and tremendous potential you were given. Let go of your fear of rejection and stop being ashamed of yourself. Your Body is Telling You: Love Yourself ~ Lise Bourbeau

Psoriasis is a chronic inflammatory, hypersensitive, painful rash. Treatment involves detoxifying the internal organs, such as the liver, pancreas and intestines but also healing repressed emotions of pain, grief and unresolved trauma for a lasting cure. Known as a chronic nervous system infection, psoriasis thrives on chronic frustration and disappointment that becomes agitated and irritated when things aren’t going our way. Fearing that everything will fall apart, individuals with psoriasis experience rage over the loss of support and money. They’re anxious and nervous about life and relationships. When they’re afraid or feel they’re being attacked, their ‘startle reflex’ kicks in and they fight back with the exact same aggression they were confronted with.  Many times there’s a feeling of being taken advantage of and that others suck them dry of energy; they feel unplugged from their spiritual nature.

When psoriasis individuals are overwhelmed they’ll isolate themselves, and turn on themselves when they don’t meet their own expectations. They become judgmental and self-critical to the point of creating self-destructive behavior. They’re desperate to prove that they can succeed and manifest their dreams – and that they can do it without the help of anyone else, which is a real paradox because they want others to be there to help and support them.

“Constant interruptions and continuous phone calls, creates more tension in me than for many people I know.  Tension creates anxiety and anxiety creates tension..the problem for me is I have work to do and can’t find time to do it..all those constant interruptions…this was my rationalization but honestly I was avoiding the basic issue.  The real problem…I was feeling guilty and self-critical whenever I couldn’t accomplish my work. …This happened the other day, I planned my work for the day and wouldn’t you know it, nothing but interruptions ..the buzzer went, the phone kept ringing…staff popped in with something that couldn’t wait…my irritation mounted .. I had only accomplished a tiny percentage of the work I had given myself. Then someone walked in that I had totally forgotten I was to see and when she walked in I looked anxiously at all the unfinished work on my desk. I was friendly on the surface but below was an undercurrent of frustration…I knew she was aware of this, I saw it reflected in her expression and body language…..

Examining my feelings later, I felt guilt at not completing my tasks and guilt for not being able to cope with all the continuous interruptions…my god I was rationalizing my anxiety…when inwardly it was a sense of failure…. then I remembered as a child only being accepted when I performed my tasks well…if I wasn’t in constant motion…I felt guilty…my parents anxiety was transmitted to me.  Now I found that I could only accept myself ‘if’ I finished my tasks on time.  I felt guilty and inadequate when I didn’t…there was no parent criticizing…it was the parent within…my guilt wasn’t ‘real guilt’ it was ‘false guilt’ conditioned from childhood… This inner processing was very healing for me.” (Psoriasis sufferer ~ Tom Mettsley)

Skin is soft tissue, reflecting our attitudes, behaviors, experiences and hidden mental problems; it has to do with—how we think others see us, and—how we see ourselves. Irritation and criticism with ourselves can result in our skin breaking out..expressing our inner state of confusion.

For Mitch who was mentioned in the previous article, Bipolar Part III  he had a father who was abusive and an alcoholic—and a mother who cleaned endlessly or was overly involved in the community—she was escaping to avoid her husband and family.  When Mitch lived at home he was constantly on hyper-alert from the cruel humiliations of his father, he experienced intense emotional up and downs and handled his anxiety by using drugs, alcohol and being overly busy.  Alcohol paralyzes the higher brain centers where judgment takes place and lessens anxiety temporarily. At twelve years of age Mitch was diagnosed with manic depression and a sufferer of psoriasis.

Although Mitch’s astrological chart had the potential for strength, confidence and a strong will, he tended to be indecisive, perhaps even timid, especially at times of stress.  He concealed his strengths and weaknesses and was hurt by many who didn’t understand him.  When deeply hurt he lashed out with a vengeance—having out-and-out screaming fights—forcing others to fight back and a few times arrested by the law.   Fighting was a structure he was lost in; it gave him a false feeling of being strong and real, rather than being whoever he was.  Mitch was afraid to take the risk of connecting and becoming vulnerable to another. He had to be in charge of his relationships with another. He’d aggressively fight to win and if he did, Mitch said he felt terrible afterwards and felt it colliding with a sense of shame. He said he couldn’t stand being used or manipulated.  Mitch was an alcoholic and a drug-user by the age of 12 and left home at the tender age of 15; he’s only 18 now.

“Psoriasis is like a volcano erupting from the pressure of unseen forces just below the surface of a person’s life. The body is releasing fear, frustration, anger and other toxic emotions. The painful, itchy psoriasis flare-up is a strong signal of rebellion against the level of stress the person is experiencing.” Deadly Emotions ~ Don Colbert

People who have suppressed their feelings are out of touch with them and weren’t permitted to express them as child.  Where they grew up they were probably like Mitch, scared, terrorized, and on hyper-alert all the time. I asked Mitch to look at how he might be mimicking both his mother and father—like raising his voice and scaring the wits out of people—or like his mom, running away from his problems. Psoriasis can lead to low self-confidence and low self-esteem. It can cause feelings of fear, embarrassment, anger, depression, and guilt. What they need to realize is that the present is not the past and that they are not likely to be in any danger with the people they relate to or in a relationship with. Some form of meditation or breath awareness is beneficial for people with psoriasis or who are overly emotional.

What can cause or make psoriasis worse? Stress, hormone imbalance, allergic reactions, toxic substances, the food you eat, and vitamin, mineral, and nutrient deficiencies. Stress makes your psoriasis worse by depleting vitamins and minerals that are essential to your health. It weakens your digestive system by reducing the amount of digestive enzymes you make, making it harder for your stomach and intestines to properly digest the food you eat. Stress also weakens your adrenal glands, which among other duties, control inflammation. Long-term stress overworks the adrenals until they shut you down from exhaustion.

Both serotonin and norepinephrine are important chemicals that affect our moods and mental well-being.  People with low serotonin levels can suffer from mood swing and anxiety as well as internal anger and depression.  These people may gravitate to some sort of an addiction such as alcohol, drugs, overeating, or become workaholics, perfectionists or procrastinators.

PSORIATIC ARTHRITIS

Article(s) on the Metaphysical causes of arthritis and rheumatoid arthritis are here

“Psoriasis can also cause psoriatic arthritis, which affects and resembles swollen, painful joints, much like that of rheumatoid arthritis.

Both psoriatic arthritis and psoriasis are chronic diseases that get worse over time, but you may have periods when your symptoms improve or go into remission alternating with times when symptoms become worse.

Psoriatic arthritis can affect joints on just one side or on both sides of your body. The signs and symptoms of psoriatic arthritis often resemble those of rheumatoid arthritis. Both diseases cause joints to become painful, swollen and warm to the touch.

However, psoriatic arthritis is more likely to also cause:

Swollen fingers and toes. Psoriatic arthritis can cause a painful, sausage-like swelling of your fingers and toes. You may also develop swelling and deformities in your hands and feet before having significant joint symptoms.

Foot pain. Psoriatic arthritis can also cause pain at the points where tendons and ligaments attach to your bones — especially at the back of your heel (Achilles tendinitis) or in the sole of your foot (plantar fasciitis).

Lower back pain. Some people develop a condition called spondylitis as a result of psoriatic arthritis. Spondylitis mainly causes inflammation of the joints between the vertebrae of your spine and in the joints between your spine and pelvis (sacroiliitis). ”  http://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/psoriatic-arthritis/basics/symptoms/con-20015006

THE THIRD LUNG

The skin, is the body of the soul; Traditional Chinese Medicine refers the skin as the ‘third lung’ and the skin’s condition is seen as a reflection of the health of the lungs.  Metaphysically, it is said that people who suffer from eczema and psoriasis are ‘weeping through their skin’.  With skin problems, some sadness needs expressing—a sadness for whatever reason has been held in and silenced—this holding in manifests itself in painful or irritating rashes. You could say psoriasis is a cluster of attitudes of defensiveness, criticism, resentment, suspicion, fear, worry and the like.  I say a cluster of attitudes because some cases of psoriasis can be seen huddled together like aphids. These tiny insects breed and suck up energy at a breathtaking pace.  This becomes an area where we become defensive and very touchy.

When we are holding onto something that should be let go, we become defensive and rigid wherever we go.  Defensiveness hardens into our character, protecting us when we feel threatened by others. When this defense mechanism is alerted, we either recoil, crawling into our shells at the first sign of trouble, or our anger rapidly boils to the surface and simmers there. Psoriasis and other skin problems can become a crutch to hide behind when painful and difficult situations arise that you don’t want or don’t know how to meet head-on. It’s quite possible you’re afraid of being controlled and caught off guard.

When our stomachs can’t digest new ideas and experiences not only food is poorly absorbed in our system but our thoughts and feelings as well. When the stomach is rigid or tense we are resisting or holding onto things that should normally pass through our bodies. Indigestion can reflect on the skin causing blemishes, eczema, and psoriasis, which metaphysically, are caused by confusing thought patterns, frustration and the inability to make our needs understood.

“If your body becomes overrun by toxic substances, your skin will become inflamed and your skin cells will reproduce too fast, leaving behind the pile of silvery scales characteristic of psoriasis. This can happen when your liver isn’t doing its job properly, when you don’t digest your food properly, when you get an infection, and when you have a food allergy. Toxic substances in your intestines enter your blood stream through the intestinal wall. Some substances that can do this and hurt you are Candida albicans (a yeast-like fungus), bacterial protein breakdown products, allergic reaction byproducts, and free radicals.” The Psoriasis Cure ~ Lisa LeVan

The skin, similar to the lungs, breathes, exhales toxins through perspiration and inhales sunlight and nutrients from the air. If the lungs are healthy, the skin has less work to do; if the lungs are weak and Metal energy is deficient, the skin must work harder to eliminate excess toxins. Weak lungs = poor circulation = poor skin because the blood supply is struggling to circulate to the skin.  Your circulation brings nutrients to the cells and also helps in flushing away toxins and other waste materials.

The lung meridian has an intimate relationship between breath, pulse, blood and energy. It controls the skin, which is the largest organ of elimination, therefore poor skin is an indicator of weak lungs. Just as the lungs exhale carbon dioxide the skin exudes toxins and wastes through the pores. This meridian is linked to the nose and sense of smell so a clogged or runny nose will indicate a lung condition. It also controls the autonomic nervous system.

When you suppress your feelings of sadness, grief, anger and pain, you also suppress the love and joy along with them.  Emotions stuffed deep in the unconscious but still acting through the autonomic nervous system cause the endocrine glands to falter weakening the resistance of the lymphatic system as well as the suppression of the elimination system, causing a backup of toxins in the body

The autonomic nervous system (ANS) derived its name from the fact that it operates without any conscious control or thought (breathing, digestion, heart rate).  It affects every gland and organ in the body.  Learning to control the autonomic nervous system through meditation and/or biofeedback creates a finely tuned communication system between our mind and our higher self

One of the issues that everyone faces when clearing up their emotional debris is how to let go of the situation and the beliefs surrounding it.  To do this we have to understand the ‘mind’ and the mind isn’t just in the brain but in every part of the body.  It is constantly recording stimuli and input and experience.  The mind is the seat of all our beliefs, perceptions, experiences, memories and aspirations.  It is the most powerful tool we have in our possession and also the most difficult one to control.  A portion of the mind, is also connected to the autonomic nervous system which is always active, even while asleep, giving us the gift of life by keeping our organs and systems working together, by controlling our circulatory system, breathing, heart-rate, blood pressure, etc.   The autonomic is also the domain of your unconscious mind, your dreams and all your memories of present and past lives.

When you breathe in, not only do you inhale air into the lungs but at the same time blood is pumped through every tissue of the body. Deep slow breathing is, therefore, a powerful driving force in the body’s circulation. The heart is the pump that propels blood into the arterial area, while the lungs act as a suction pump on the circulation.

STRESS

“The stress response can also literally poison the brain—because it causes excessive secretion of the adrenal hormone cortisol. Cortisol is released at about the same time adrenaline is. However it stays in your system much longer than adrenaline does, and that creates a terrible problem. Cortisol gives your hippocampus, as well as other parts of your brain, a highly destructive ‘toxic bath’. It can be so destructive that your brain may never again recover absolutely all of its cognitive function.” Brain Longevity by Dharma Singh Khalsa, M.D. with Cameron Stauth

The constant release of the stress hormones adrenaline and cortisol can sear the body in a way that is similar to acid searing metal. Even hours after the output of these chemicals, they still remain high in the body, elevating blood sugar levels, causing damage to the immune system, decalcifying our bones and thinning our skin. Long term emotional stress can reach chronic levels with the production of these hormones.  This is when toxic emotions become deadly emotions. This powerful ongoing infusion of chemicals injures tissues and organs, resulting in many different autoimmune dis-eases.

Prolonged and untreated stress can increase our risk of getting sick.  When we are under stress, the thyroid works harder, pumping out more of its hormones.  If the stress continues, the thyroid will be unable to maintain its increased level of production and may begin to fail.  When this happens, the immune system becomes confused and starts producing antibodies against the thyroid.  As the thyroid falters, metabolism slows.  When metabolism slows we start eating the wrong kind of carbohydrates that cause the Candida already in your system to multiply and spread.

CANDIDA AND LEAKY GUT

As soon as food is eaten, the digestive system begins to separate food into minute particles and compounds, which are then capable of passing through the walls (Epithelium Cells) of the small intestine and then into the bloodstream. The movement these minute food particles, from one side of the intestinal wall to the outerside is known as osmosis. The continuous movement of nutrients can only take place when there are a variety of minerals from the food we eat. Refined and processed foods lack the minerals needed for this, causing waste and impurities to enter the bloodstream.

When different areas of the intestinal tract become irritated, inflamed or breached, we can suffer from an array of symptoms such as: constipation, diarrhea, heartburn, nausea, indigestion, gas, bloating and cramps, and these are usually caused by a leaky gut which further causes allergies, anemia, fatigue, weight loss, arthritis, eczema, psoriasis, muscle pain and more. Symptoms can persist for years with people bouncing from doctor to doctor without ever being properly diagnosed. While these diseases have different names, they have one thing in common—a leaky gut.

“A leaky gut is a condition in which the small intestine wall become inflamed and breached with tiny pinholes that leak putrid food particles into the blood stream. Your immune system builds antibodies to the proteins in this fecal matter and your body attacks these proteins as if they were foreighn germs. Thatis why it is called an auto-immune disease, because your immune system becomes confused between its own protein and foreign protein. It goes on to attack protein in other parts of the body such as between the joints, causing rheumatoid arthritis. The bone and muscle pain of fibromyalgia and lupus is also attributed to the spread of toxins through a leaky gut. As the cascade of inflammatory reactions spreads to the lungs, it results in asthma. These poisons infiltrate the blood and lymph and overload the liver’s ability to detoxify them. Some of this overload emties into the skin, manifesting as psoriasis or excema. Other dry skin problems result from the malabsorption of essential fats and B-vitamins. Other dry skin problems result from the malabsorption of essential fats and B-vitamins. Anemia and other nutrient deficiencies develop because of the impaired assimilation, in spite of all those supplements you take” Better Nutrition Magazine ~ by Steve Meyerowitz

All the physical and chemical changes in the body happen through a process called metabolism, which is basically defined as the way your body processes and changes the food you eat into energy.  For metabolism to work properly your blood needs a sufficient amount of oxygen, glucose and certain nutrients.  If your metabolism is sluggish, your cells will have problems receiving the nutrients they need to function.

If you suffer from leaky gut, probiotic bacteria (lactobacillus and bifidobacteria) can be significant in reducing the occurrence of Candidiasis and also stop it from reoccurring.  These bacteria help in the absorption of vitamins, detox carcinogens and support the immune system. Leaky gut can also reduce certain minerals from being absorbed into the body such as magnesium (enzyme response), zinc (hair loss), copper (high cholesterol, osteoarthritis) and calcium (osteoporosis). Taking a good multi-vitamin with Omega 3 or evening primose oil will help absorption of the vitamins/minerals in the body.

There are plenty of herbs one can take for candida, one of the best is said to be Oregano oil, which is very antiseptic and kills candida as well as parasites.  It’s quite aggressive on the internal mucus membranes, esophagus, stomach, intestines and colon which is why it should always be diluted with some oil, milk or honey and part of your meal. In Greek, oregano means ‘Mountain Joy’ and it has shown to have the highest levels of the antioxidants, polyphenols carvacrol, rosmarinic acid and thymol. You can even put oil of oregano and even oil of rosemary in your daily salad dressing.    On average 1-3 drops is enough, anymore and you could end up with abdominal pain.  Some say it’s best to take this essential oil on a short term basis, 5-7 days, stop, and if necessary start again.

MOLDS IN FOODS AND THE ENVIRONMENT

Molds are important to add here as they are absorbed, inhaled and eaten, producing substances that are toxic to the nerves and particularly to the central nervous system.  Molds produce antibiotics which are actually released in the immediate environment, and as we know with Candida, antibiotics look to kill competing bacteria—even the good ones. It’s important to know that these fungi’s are capable of damaging the body’s nerves and tissue cells as well as mild to severe mental and physical changes in a person.

A person can become sensitized when a foreign substance enters the body through inhalation, ingestion, injection or absorption through the skin. Imagine, a tiny piece of skin about the size of a quarter contains 3 feet of blood vessels, 12 feet of nerves, 25 nerve cells, 100 sweat glands, and more than 3,000,000 cells; phew, that’s quite a complex team working 24/7.

METAPHYSICALLY HEALING PSORIASIS

“The key to healing lies in the unconscious.  If we can become aware of the memories stored in our bodies and bring them to mind, we can gain a different, nonrational understanding of how the past influences the present and our conscious minds and actions.  We can do it if we learn to tap into what I call the intuition network, to help us envision and create healthier lives, instead of allowing old memories and patterns of behavior to continue re-creating painful experiences.” Mona Lisa Schulz

Balance is not something we were born with, it is learned through experiences. Life is a blend of happiness and sadness, of good and bad times. Many of our issues and challenges in life, especially relationships come from our misunderstanding of ‘love’ and a lack of love for ourselves. When this happens we have a tendency to fold our arms over our chest or stiffly hold them at our sides……we feel awkward and self-conscious afraid to let go and share our vulnerabilities to others. It also prevents us from revealing our strengths.

“When there is chaos between family members, there is an increased risk of hair loss (alopecia) not to mention psoriasis and other skin problems.

So as you can see, having solid external relationships is essential to our health. Science backs if up by showing that “social integration” – wide social networks and social support – creates stronger immune systems. In fact, studies show that more and better relationships mean more and better white blood cells, which help us resist infections and protect us from a wide variety of health perils, including arthritis, depression and the worsening of symptoms of conditions like tuberculosis. Social interaction also decreases the amount of medication people need and accelerates their recovery from illness. .” ALL IS WELL ~ Louise L. Hay and Mona Lisa Sculz

Usually, when we have problems with the skin, we need to look at the liver and gall bladder and their meridians. What we’re looking at is old debris that has cluttered and accumulated in the system. Inner frustrations also clog the ‘system’ and the intake of excess foods and alcohol will tax the liver. Stress definitely has something to do with it along with psychological disappointments and letdowns. If the system becomes sluggish the person usually feels tired and when we’re tired we eat for energy and usually with all the wrong foods.

Also, if one has been undergoing deep self-examination it can leave them feeling extremely sensitive about virtually everything.

Sometimes when we are on a spiritual journey we feel an inner restlessness arising – as if it wants to burst free from our physical frame! Our bodies on the other hand want to protect that which is struggling and fight hard to adjust to the fire of this awakening spirit.

“The breath carries oxygen throughout the bloodstream, and it also carries prana or spiritual energy, which is the esoteric correlation to oxygen.  Prana energizes the physical body through a network of meridians—the fine channels that are components of the silver cord or the thread of life—by sending energy through the etheric or spiritual network.  The force currents along these lines are linked with each other, and with the nervous system of man.  They enter the body through the spleen.” Jeanne Avery

The skin really is the body of the soul.  It is actually one of the richest sources of all the hormones found in the body.  When we stimulate the skin we can cause a shower of healing chemicals into our blood stream.  One of the most important of these are growth factors or growth hormones.  By simply stimulating the skin we can produce these growth factors or hormones right into our blood stream.  Like the other organs, the skin is also the seat of emotions.  When we are deeply moved we say we were deeply touched.  We describe situations as sticky, ticklish or prickly, all these have to do with sensations in our body.  Therefore the experience of touch or sensation linked to a thought is really what an emotion is.  Once again, we can influence emotions, feelings and desires through our skin as a result of the release of these hormones.

“Psycho/emotionally your skin is your boundary, the meeting place between you and the outer world. Therefore, skin issues often arise when someone or something has cross that boundary and “gets under your skin,” or where communication is making your “skin crawl.”

Are you feeling invaded, trespassed upon, or have you gone beyond your limitations and reached out too far?
Or perhaps you are limiting yourself too much, holding back inside while putting up a protective cover?
Are your boundaries being penetrated against your wishes?
What and who is getting under your skin?
Are you trying to break free of restrictions being imposed on you?
Is a fear of intimacy making you resist touching and feeling?”  YOUR BODY SPEAKS YOUR MIND ~ Deb Shapiro

Once we take back the responsibility for what we are feeling, we experience a tremendous power in our lives. We no long feel like a victim or bystander; we no longer give others the power to decide how we experience our lives. Also, the others in our lives will be more open to us when they see that we no longer blame them for what we are feeling, and they will be more willing to assume responsibility for their own feelings.

BELLY BREATHING

Breathing is essential to life and when you breathe properly, it can help you clear your mind and reach higher states of awareness. Belly breathing can help you relax ay time you are tense. When you feel anxious about something, just close your eyes and take 5 to 10 deep breaths. Deep breathing can also energize you, when you’re feeling tired or drained or if you’ve been breathing from the chest. Retrain your body to breathe properly, from your diaphragm or belly.

Life flat on the floor or on your bed. Take a few deep breaths and feel yourself relax. Place one hand on your abdomen. Take a deep breath through your nose. As you inhale, let your abdomen push your hand out.

As you exhale, feel your hand go down. Do this 3 to 10 times. Take your time with each breath. Breathing this way may feel strange to you at first, but with practice you’ll become accustomed to it. Try to do belly breathing every day. A good time to do this is when you get into bed at night—when you first wake up in the morning—and any time you want to relax.
Deep abdominal breathing and exercise are all ways to support lymphatic circulation. Every time we contract a muscle, the muscle rubs against numerous lymph vessels, stimulating them to contract. This is another reason exercise is so good for us!

JUMP AND SHAKE

“EXERCISE: While all exercise stimulates the lymph, jumping on the rebounder is the best. If you do not have room for a rebounder, a jump-and-shake exercise works just as well. With feet slightly apart, you jump just a little and then shake the body. It is similar to dancing in African tribes that bob-and-shake type of dance.

The bounce and shake routine gets your heart pumping and your body moving so that your metabolism starts working. Follow the following steps to do the bounce and shake:

• Standing with knees slightly bent, feet comfortably apart, bounce up and down easily without lifting heels off the ground

• As you bounce, let your arms hang, relaxed, by your side. Shake your hands

• Nod your head up and down in a comfortable range of motion, 2 to 4 inches

• As you nod back and look up, breathe in through your nose to the count of 5, and then exhale to the count of 5 as you lower your head

• During the first minute, breathe through your nose; During the second minute make a noise originating from the base of your throat – like snoring; Then breathe in through your nose, and out through puckered lips, as if blowing out a birthday candle

• Stop bouncing and shaking. Take a moment to feel the vibrations you have created throughout your body. http://www.lynnkoiner.com/astrology-articles/the-lymphatic-system-from-elaine-hruska

BECOME AWARE OF YOUR POSTURE AND RELAX

Whenever you become aware of the position of your body, you immediately relax and experience a flow of energy because you’re listening and communicating with your body and its surroundings.

Our posture expresses how we’re feeling, correcting it will change the way you feel.

*COLOR HEALING

“…lie or sit, and close your eyes, imagine you hold a laser bream made of different colors in your hands. Visualize moving this light on any area of your skin that is irritated, dry, swollen, itchy or spotty. Observe the light changing color according to the part of the body the laser is treating. For example, if the skin is red, the laser may change to blue to counteract the redness. If the skin is dry, the laser may change to pink to regenerate the area; or if the skin is swollen, orange rays are great to calm the swelling. And if the skin is itchy, yellow rays can help to soothe it. Focus on letting go of all anger, frustration, self-criticism, irritation, and dislike of yourself.

Say: “Divine Healing Intelligence, please release all irritation, anger, frustration, criticism, invalidation, and insecurity I carry in my skin, as well as all points of view, all patterns, and the positive and negative that contribute to this condition.” Repeat the word “CLEAR” until you feel a shift occur.

In your mind’s eye, observe your skin beginning to clear, becoming radiant, lustrous, glowing, and soft. How does it feel to have this new skin? Allow yourself to take lone deep breaths and enjoy your renewed skin.” The Secret Language of Your Body ~ Inna Segel

*Suggestion: When I took a Chromotherapy (color-healing) course, blue was the color of all over-heated conditions in the body that needed cooling.  It’s also a color for the imbalance of yeast, bacteria or fungus in your system. It heals problems with the skin, the reproductive system, the eyes and chest.  Violet moves through the etheric and subtle bodies, helping to remove old and worn out patterns of behavior.

NATURAL REMEDIES FOR PSORIASIS

Holistic healing is about natural remedies and treatments along with wholesome foods, exercise, sunshine, fresh air, positive thinking, the love of work, and a balanced lifestyle. Below are some ideas to help with psoriasis. I’m sure there’s many, many more out there.

MINERALS

Minerals play an important role in regulating the acid/alkaline levels of the body, and, they are a major factor in regard to your metabolism. They are the spark plugs of the body, transmitting vital electrical and magnetic forces (positive/negative charges) which are constantly required to energize the body and keep it running efficiently.  There are fourteen essential minerals that are required for the body to work properly and they must be consumed in our diet, as the body is unable to produce them.

B complex vitamins help support blood lymphocytes – helps promote anti-bodies and T-cells distribution and immune cell activity.

(leaky gut and candida disrupts the metabolism of vitamin B6 and EFAs – you can get extra B vitamins through a good mutli-vitamin.  B6 is needed by the body to produce serotonin, hence its ability to ward off depression.

Carotenoids – precursor to vitamin A – increases immune activity – kills cancer cells – protects cell membrane fats from oxidation and damage

Zinc is a mineral that stimulates the immune system and promotes T-cell function

Selenium helps build your immune system and keep it healthy – your body uses selenium to help white blood cells to clear viruses and bacteria from your body.

Magnesium deficiency stimulates the release of inflammatory cytokines. Regular use helps regulate the immune system and protect it against infection – it reduces the risk of autoimmune diseases caused by an overactive immune system.  (Magnesium should be taken with a B vitamin as together they help the liver. Like zinc, magnesium is easier for your body to absorb and use if it is bound to an amino acid.)

Omega 3 (fish oil, flax seed, evening primrose oil, borage, blackcurrant seed oil  help to reduce inflammation and the absorption of nutrients. They promote strong cell membranes in your gastrointestinal tract – boosts the immune system and helps slow the aging process

Chlorella is an excellent “whole Food’ you can buy at any health store.  It’s rich in chlorophyll, which helps detox the body and gives a boost in energy and improves the immune system. It comes in powder or capsules

The integrity of the lymph system is dependent on immune cells in the liver that filter out harmful bacteria and destructive yeasts.

Milk Thistle is a powerful liver regenerator. People with damaged livers can regenerate tissue with Milk Thistle. I take these herbs in the form of tinctures but they can be taken in any form.

Dandelion Root supports the liver, pancreas, kidneys and spleen. It has diuretic and purifying properties.

Yellow Dock is a blood purifier that also helps the liver and gall bladder and is also high in iron.

Each of us has to take responsibility to explore and educate ourselves about our own health.  Doctors can help in the process but really and truly you must do the work.  We have to nurture ourselves, respect the body and its processes and help them to function at their best, as they were intended by the law of Nature.

WHAT IS CANDIDA

“Fifty years ago doctors identified Candida albicans as a frequent cause of vagina, mouth, throat and gastrointestinal tract infections. Now it’s well know to affect all body parts, organs, tissues and cells. Research physicians suspect Candida as a complication in acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS), a contributor to early death in various forms of cancer, a source of infertility in some women, and a mischief-maker in other medical tragedies such as multiple sclerosis, myasthenia gravis, schizophrenia, and arthritis. On rare occasions yeast overgrowth results in pneumonia, meningitis, and similar devastating body invasions.” The Yeast Syndrome: How to Help Your Doctor Identify and Treat the Real Cause… ~By John Parks Trowbridge, M.D., Morton Valker, D.P.M.

No matter what we do, we’ll never rid our bodies of Candida. Candida albicans occurs naturally in nature, in the soil, on vegetables and fruits and in small quantities in our mouths, intestines and in a woman’s vagina. When in balance with the other 400 species of friendly bacteria in our gut, Candida can live harmlessly in our bodies. Candida loves living in warm, moist areas of the body and especially where there’s an ample supply of food for it to feast on. When your body is healthy, Candida can’t penetrate your defenses, but if an overgrowth of Candida starts running rampant in the intestines, the medical term is called Candidiasis. Metaphysically, candida feeds on what is not digested by someone – life energy is easily frittered away. Candida issues can point to deeper emotional ones, sometimes rooted in connection to the site of the candida infection itself. We’ll be looking at this later on in the article.

The intestines are the longest organ in the body, and also your main filtration system. It is thought that about 80% of your immune function is in your gut and a lot of that is governed by how the bacteria are able to function—there are 10 times more bacteria than there are cells in our bodies! The intestines main job is to absorb what is useful to your body, but if it’s plumbing, electrical and drainage system is compromised, the body will start absorbing toxins, and clogging the system (kind of like dirty oil in a car). When your pipes are clogged, proteins, fats, and/or sugars can enter your circulation triggering inflammation and a defensive immune system.

Medically, we are told candidiasis, is caused from an improper diet, which is known to upset the bacterial balance in the intestinal. A bacterial imbalance means you aren’t digesting carbs properly and, undigested carbs become food for ‘bad bacteria’. Bad bacteria produces acidic toxins irritating the lining of the digestive system, when this happens your body secretes mucus into the intestines. With too much mucus, enzymes from the pancreas can’t breakdown the food, giving it more time to ferment in your gut. Just one teaspoon of undigested carbs and sugars can produce approximately 50 millimetres of gas in the intestine. Toxins and gases can damage the intestinal lining, making us more susceptible to the condition known as ‘leaky gut’.

“The intestinal tract tries to protect itself from the constant exposure to toxic substances like drugs, environmental chemicals, food additives, refined carbohydrates (white flour acts like glue in the intestines), and heavy metals by creating mucus on the intestinal wall. As mucus builds up on the lining, toxins, yeasts, and parasites stick to it, until it becomes “putrefactive debris.” This prevents the proper assimilation of nutrients and contributes to toxins entering the bloodstream”. Juicing, Fasting and Detoxing for Life ~ By John Calbom MA, Cherie Calbom MS

When the intestines become clogged we can suffer from constipation, diarrhea, bloating, trapped gas, skin problems, cellulite, asthma, headaches or vaginitis. All these can be caused from candiasis or an imbalance of the yeast Candida albicans. Toxic buildups are stored in the fat cells of the body…if these toxins leak into the fluids of the body, which includes the blood, they can cause an array of problems as suggested above. As well, antibiotics and cortisone, and hormonal supplements such as birth control pills can upset the delicate balance in the intestinal area, killing off many of the friendly bacteria. If the candida multiplies out of control it can mutate into a fungus breaking through the tissues into the bloodstream, where it can create havoc with our emotions and any part of the body.

So far, nearly one hundred Candida toxins have been identified; two of the most known are carbon monoxide and acetylaldehyde (part of the formaldehyde family), which are known to suppress the T-cells of the immune system, known as the bodies ‘killer cells’. Candida toxins also cause histamine to be released, which has a major role in asthma and allergic reactions.  Candida also produces alcohol in the system and for some people infected with it, they appear to others as drunk or mentally confused .. without ever taking a drink.

Red blood cell flexibility is also affected when acetylaldehyde is in the system, decreasing the rate at which red blood cells can carry oxygen to the tissues.  If the brain is oxygen deprived, the central nervous will be affected causing: mood swings, behavioral changes, headaches, hyperactivity, paranoia, insomnia and list goes on.

(Inside the brain, histamine plays an important role in stimulating the release of neurotransmitters serotonin, dopamine and norepinephrine. When too much histamine is released in the brain we can suffer from ADHD symptoms, depression, aggressiveness, compulsive disorders and a ‘racing brain’. Similar to bipolar or manic depression you could become obsessive about sex, cry easily, have abnormal fears and even contemplate suicide. Too little histamine can cause disorders like chronic fatigue, paranoia, hallucinations and depression.)

“The Candida cells excrete a chemical that shrinks the cells of the intestinal wall, and as these cells continue to wither away, the intestinal tract further degrades, becomes more inflamed, and leaks even more toxins into the blood stream.

So now you have a Candida infection, and the yeast is living off the carbohydrates you are eating, which results in a further imbalance in your blood-sugar levels. Remember that an elevated level of cortisol will inhibit your cells’ sensitivity to insulin and your ability to store glucose for energy; now the Candida is living off your glucose-producing foods before you can even use them, and your energy level is dropping because your muscles and brain are starved for the glucose that fuels them. Your sugar cravings are increasing; you are consuming lots of junk food that is high in calories; and you are probably gaining more weight….

Prolonged periods of elevated cortisol levels can destroy immune cells, rob these cells of the chemicals that are necessary for them to function properly, and even shrink the thymus gland that is making these immune-system cells. Add this to the fact that your poor immune system is already overburdened by dealing with the toxins leaking out of your intestinal tract. The Stress Effect: Discover the Connection Between Stress and Illness ~ By Richard Weinstein

Candiasis affects the immune system, nervous system and endocrine system as they are all connected. It can cause fatigue, allergies, thrush, vaginal, bladder, prostate and other infections plus body aches, thyroid, mood disorders and depression. It has become a major health problem because of being misdiagnosed and mistreated in the past—Candida has now reached nearly epidemic proportions, affecting both men and women.

“Problems related to [the endocrine] glands and organs include low blood sugar (hypoglycemia), diabetes, and obesity, all of which are increasing at alarming proportions in the United States [and the world]. Hypothyroidism is rampant, especially among women. And the ailment most common across the board with males and females is adrenal exhaustion, where the adrenals output chronically high cortisol levels, resulting in fatigue, low immunity, anxiety, insomnia, and weight gain.” The Candida Cure: The 90-Day Program to Beat Candida and Restore Vibrant Health ~ by Ann Boroch

Women who think they may have candidiasis could suffer from extreme hormonal shifts due to estrogen imbalance. The amount of estrogen released into the body is regulated by the liver and the bacteria in the intestinal tract. The liver sends excess estrogen through the gallbladder duct to the small intestines, where the normal bacteria break it down. If you lack the bacteria to destroy excess estrogen and you have intestinal leakage, the estrogen will be reabsorbed and can end up in lymph-node sites such as the breasts, ovaries and uterus. This could contribute to endometriosis, fibroid tumors, estrogen-sensitive cancers, PMS and monthly pre-menstrual migraines.

“The presence of a vaginal infection indicates regret (regarding past sexual behavior) and a desire to express innocence and purity. Note that infection always represents repressed anger.” The Body is Telling You: Love Yourself! ~ Lise Bourbeau

Diabetic women experience more vaginal infections, because the excess sugar in their blood is a ripe environment to attract yeast infections. Also, women can “catch” fungal yeast infections from their partner as Candida has been found in male seminal fluids, which can reinfect women during sexual intercourse.

CANDIDIASIS SYMPTOMS

“Feeling lousy, without reason, being irritable or easily angered;

Craving yeasty foods (bread, alcohol, fermented cheeses) and sweets

Eating these foods may provide temporary relief, but this may be followed by a worsening of symptoms,

Abdominal pains;

Premenstrual syndrome, menstrual irregularities, and pain;

Symptoms resembling hypoglycemia (fatigue, sharp hunger spells, weakness, trembling, drowsiness, cold sweats, dizziness, headaches, blurred vision, palpitations, rapid pulse, and irritability);

Vaginal infections and local discomfort during intercourse;

Prostatitis or impotence;

Loss of libido;

Persistent fungus infections of the feet crotch, toenails, or skin;

Fatigue that is worsened when exposed to molds (basements, gardening); and

Heightened sensitivity to tobacco smoke, perfumes and other chemicals.

Treatment may involve avoidance of foods that promote yeast growth – which are often the very foods that are craved; avoidance (to a reasonable extend) of antibiotics; taking the anti-yeast (prescription) drug nystatin; eating yogurt; taking capsules of lactobacilli to replace the normal flora that are killed of by antibiotics; drinking special herbal teas (taheebo, la pacho, pau d’arco); and having cleansing enemals (Trowbridge/Walker). How Can I Heal What Hurts: Wholistic Healing and Bioenergies ~ Daniel J Benor

Skin conditions such as psoriasis, seborrhea, rosacea, toenail fungal are usually associated with Candida and food allergies. It’s been advised not to eat  Nightshade foods, such as: tomatoes, potatoes, eggplant and peppers (all peppers). These foods can cause the thinning of the intestinal lining allowing toxins to leak out affecting the skin.

METAPHYSICAL CAUSES OF CANDIDIASIS

“Candida is a yeast-like fungus that can occur in warm, damp areas, such as the mouth, intestines, bladder, or vagina. Normally this fungus lives in balance in the body, but such balance can easily be broken, whether by excessive stress, antibiotics, or birth control pills, that can weaken the immune system. Due to these factors increasing in our lives, so the cases of candida have also increased. Candida has been named the cause of numerous ailments, from depression to be behavioural problems, as the fungus is said to be able to move into different organs and systems in the body. Doctors disagree on this, and more medical research is needed. As Candida can grow for many years without any obvious effects, it is not always easy to diagnose.

Candida in the digestive system suggests you are being psycho/emotionally invaded by someone or something, and feel out of control. It also impies that your normal living environment has become upset or out of balance, allowing other energies to enter and make themselves at home.

Are you feeling particularly insecure?

Is something eating away inside you?

Are you out of contact with your inner strength and resilience?

What is needed to regain your stability?” Deb Shapiro ~ YOUR BODY SPEAKS YOUR MIND

People susceptible to candiasis have a tendency to deny or play down their emotions, struggling against how they actually feel. All this creates a stranglehold or a clinging to keep their inner turmoil from coming out into the open. Others may not see through your façade at first, at least not until they get to know you. Friends may come and go because they get the feeling you don’t want to help yourself. They see you as not feeling confident about who you are. You may look really sad to them or really angry at the world. It also seems as if you’re holding back from being honest with yourself. But that’s further from the truth, isn’t it? They don’t understand how much pain and sadness is buried inside you and as result you’ve built walls so no more sadness could come in. But shutting yourself off is not giving you the chance to experience true friendship. You are in fact pushing people away.

This is really interesting because of all the organs in the body, the intestines have a great need to protect and be protected. It could be we didn’t feel welcomed into the world or felt our parents didn’t nurture us properly. When we feel that way, we feel out of place, unwanted and the rage within is so strong we can’t allow ourselves to express. In fact our need for security can be so strong we can lie to protect ourselves or lie to protect someone or to cover something up. When we hold or distort the truth, it can haunt us, especially if we’re afraid the other person might find out. Every time we lie, we have to stumble over our own thoughts and feeling about it, creating our limitations and obstacles.

The intestines house a long muscle that automatically moves when full, but when we are nervous, tense and irritated this muscle is unable to move and becomes contracted. Not only can this contraction affect our breathing (diaphragm), it also affects blood circulation as well as the lymph system, making it difficult for our bodies to absorb minerals and trace elements. Without these essential nutrients we can experience hypoglycemia, heart palpitations, trembling and higher amounts of perspiration. We may experiences numbness in the hands and feet, cramps in and spasms in the stomach and severe back pain.

“People who have candida are often very frustrated and angry and may feel scattered in their personal and professional lives. Since they are basically untrusting, they are often very demanding in relationships. They are great takers, but not very good givers. Early in life, they learned that they could not trust people who were close to them. Now, they cannot trust themselves…..

Candidiasis is a state of inner imbalance, not a germ, but, a dis-ease. Candida albicans is a strain of yeasts commonly found in the gastrointestinal and genito-urinary areas of the body. It is generally harmless, but when resistance and immunity are low, the yeast is able to multiply rapidly, feeding on sugars and carbohydrates in these tracts. It releases toxins into the bloodstream, and causes far-reaching problems. Stress and lack of rest aggravate this condition in a body that is already out of balance.”” ~ Louise L. Hay

Whether they’re conscious of it or not, people who are susceptible to Candida have experienced a profound betrayal in love; they have a very hard time trusting anyone or anything. As young children they might not have been told or understood the concept of death and so felt betrayed by the death of a parent, a pet or someone they loved dearly. They also feel betrayed by the person who never told them their love of their live was dying. Suffering both loss and betrayal, a person’s trust in life itself is shattered.

Breaches of trust can happen when the basic care we expect from our parents is withdrawn or withheld. Children unconsciously develop a sense that life itself cannot be trusted when protection isn’t given or nourishment is withheld. As adults, they feel as if they were fools to have ever trusted in the first place. That’s why as adults, they will protect themselves at all costs from ever being in a vulnerable place again.

“This disorder occurs mainly in people who have been psychologically, emotionally, and physically over-active and are in serious need of stabilizing their lives. …candidiasis corresponds to issues regarding the creation of a stabilized living situation, specifically what is known as the “nesting bug”. The stress emerging from the unfulfilled desire to lay down roots and establish a home and family is directly connected to this virus.” Caroline Myss ~ The Creation of Health

Usually when we have difficulty stabilizing our lives, it may be because we grew up in the midst of an out-of-control parent…one who was either an alcoholic, a drug addict, a gambler or a manic depressive. As a consequence our childhood was out of control, suffering a profound lack of safety. Like a person suffering from Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) the child can never let down their guard, believing that if they do, all hell will break loose. They’re continually stressed, wearing themselves out worrying about what could possibly go wrong.

“Candida—Self-doubt. Feeling scattered, hazy, frazzled, stressed, trapped. Frustrated with your partner, blaming your partner or someone close to you. Feeling angry that you aren’t getting what you want but not wanting to change or to take action … Blocking the energy flow in your life. Holding on to grief and sadness from the past”. Inna Segel

Candida can be missed and misdiagnosed, because it is often masked as another problem such as anxiety, depression, anger, relationship problems, etc. Unknown to us there is another driving force behind what is happening to us. Candidiasis once unleashed is determined to survive…all its energy is directed toward getting what it wants to hold its self-image together. It will keep the relationship with you going as long as this yeast/fungi gets what it wants. This ultimately works against you to get the kind of help you need to turn this disease around. When the stress of trying to keep yourself together fails, the Candida can overwhelmingly cause you to fall into deep apathy and depression. You may regress to earlier parts of your life, replaying over and over your childhood wounds.

People who have trust issues have had to adapt to the betrayals they experienced as a child—children unconsciously develop a sense that life can’t be trusted—especially when protection isn’t given or nourishment is withheld. As adults we keep replaying over and over the stories of when we weren’t able to express our needs or even hope our secrets will be fulfilled. To cover up our feelings, we convince ourselves we’d be better off alone and do our best not to rely on anyone. Now we’re walled off in a world of emotional anguish in exactly the same way our parents raised us.

In order to escape the sorrow of our past, we tend to seek refuge in our imagination—we live in tomorrow, filled with hopes and desires for the future. The more we desire for this kind of future, the more we become dissatisfied with today. This dissatisfaction creates more tension and stress in the body and causes us to feel even more insecure. To fight insecurity we resist anything that forces us to sit in silence or remain still. Restless we could resort to drinking, smoking, over-eating, sex and drugs. To relax, we join in competitive games and sports but it doesn’t help us because our continual thoughts and attitudes are still stuck in the past.

Depleted energy can cause depression, loneliness and fear. If we keep pushing ourselves beyond what the body can endure, we can suffer from an endless of physical, mental and emotional disorders such as chronic fatigue, fibromyalgia, insomnia, stomach ulcers, indigestion, irritable bowel syndrome, obesity and candiasis.

“You hold onto the hurt, the anger, the resentment, because you fear that if you could let it go effortlessly, then whoever caused the pain in the first place, would be getting away with it too easily.

By holding on, you might still be searching for closure, and needing an apology from someone, again, or for the first time. You want to arrive at the moment with all the baggage in hand, to make sure they understand all the weight you have been carrying around. Seeking validation for your suffering, acknowledgment, and to be reassured, yes, indeed, you really were hurt.

The only problem here is that you will never be free of the hurt, anger, or pain so long as you are waiting for that grand moment to come. The perpetrator has a backstage pass into your mind anytime. You’re open 24/7. It’s like being free on a very very long chain. You can move in any direction you want in a circle, and stretch pretty far, but at any given moment, be snapped back to that time and place, and the one snapping you back is the very person who hurt you, and you are the one that gave them permission to be there.

You gave control of your happiness to someone else.

Does it affect the other person if you are wallowing in misery, crying your eyes out reliving the moment, staring at the cars going by on the road losing hours of your time? Nope!” ABRAHAM HICKS

Candida can strike at times after we have suffered a great loss, it could from a a childhood trauma, a job loss, a physical injury or even a debilitating illness. Having lost our own power we strike out at those we love, our family, our partner, even our children. Instead of seeing a relationship as give and take or sharing our feelings, we see it as a competition as ‘who’s going to win’.

“When I get angry and act against my better judgment, it’s not just because I’m protecting myself…..it’s also about who I wasn’t able to be as a child and teenager. Learning to pay attention to my own behaviors and habits, I’ve recognized anger as an ongoing pattern for me. It all seems to come from ignoring my intuition and even my emotional and sexual boundaries to please others. But of course no matter how hard I try the relationship ends and I scold myself ‘again’ for sabotaging my worth for pleasing others. In fact it’s really embarrassing after it’s all over that I probably wouldn’t have even dated that person if I had listened to my intuition.” (email from Ruth B)

FINDING INNER BALANCE

“The value of words is often underestimated.Like smudges on a pair of spectacles, they have the ability to blur everything you do not make crystal clear. Listen with great care to what is being said and choose your own words as if they were diamonds” Sally Brompton

“Trust or mistrust is the basic element of your first chakra program, which is a foundation for all the other programs that follow. Trust enables the body to unfold from its cramped position, allows security and calm, and encourages connection, bonding, and exploration. With trust the survival instinct is satisfied and there is a sense of emotional well-being. If you are confident that the world is a friendly space, you have the sense that you will live. Without trust, your survival feels constantly threatened, and because there is nothing you can do to meet the threat, the anxiety is unbearable.” Eastern Body Western Mind ~ Anodea Smith

The right to survive is the most important aspect of the first chakra. Food, clothing, shelter, heat, medical help and physical contact are among the necessities of the base chakra. It represents our roots, our foundation and again our survival. The main purpose of this chakra is as Anodea Smith importantly pointed out, to help or guide the other chakras or energy centers, when they need it. If this chakra is strong, then your body will be healthy, strong and give you strength to move about your day. The key words to this chakra is ‘to root’, to keep you in touch with the ground. The body is the home of our soul and the foundation for our lives on the earth plane. Thanks to our body we can see and understand everything that’s happening within us. When we are sick or in trouble our body is the first to let us know. What we don’t understand will be expressed through our bodies in the form of aches and pains, stiff joints and sore muscles. The lesson to learn here is to be in contact with and respect our bodies and our root center.

In her book “Feel the Fear and Do It Anyway”, Dr. Susan Jeffers wisely says, “If you always do what you’ve always done, you will always get what you’ve always got.” In other words, if we don’t learn to break old habits programmed in our psyche we will never be free of our unconscious drives and habits. Old ideas and habits are anything that bind you to the past, anything that bogs you down in an emotional quagmire, anything that prevents you moving to the next stage of life, anything that causes you pain.

Your own body is the greatest health book you will ever read. When the body/mind is aware and more flexible to our inner energies, we learn not only to hear how to nurture and take care of ourselves, we’re also able to let go of old perspectives, memories, information and patterns. When your nervous system is free of all your chatter and interfering thoughts then you’ll be able hear your body’s own inner requests for self-healing and self-care.

The Second Chakra

I’ve discussed the 2nd chakra in different articles on my blog, you might find them helpful or interesting to you…

TECHNIQUES IN BREAKING THROUGH MENTAL AND EMOTIONAL BEHAVIORS here

“Part 2 – METAPHYSICAL CAUSES OF PROSTATE PROBLEMS” here

BREATHING IS THE KEY TO AWARENESS here

The 2nd chakra builds upon and blends with the root chakra.  It represents sexual balance, emotional expression, intuition, cooperation, relationships, patience and attention to detail.  If we were nurtured and cared for as a child, then the gift of the sacral center is the ability to feel your feelings, make decisions, express who you are and reach for your dreams.  But if the ground of our root chakra suffered from breaches of trust and betrayals as a child, we’ll always create a distance between ourselves and the person(s) we love.

“On the level of physical perception, your second chakra automatically evaluates any situation according to how it affects your survival. Are you physically safe? Are there any financial implications? Is your power in this situation threatened by someone bigger, stronger, richer, sexier? A part of you instinctively assesses each moment of your life for its potential threat to your survival. Even if you enter a room full of loving friends and family, for example, your brain and body still scan the room and the energy around you for any impending physical dangers or negative attitudes. You also automatically scan for any threat to people you love. Hoften have you felt, on running into a friend or family member or thinking of someone that you “knew” something was wrong, even though you could not identify it?” Sacred Contracts ~ Caroline Myss

I’ve noticed that people with 2nd chakra issues suffer from passive-aggressive behaviors.  We can gravitate from being extremely over-sensitive, shy and self-depreciating to extremely controlling, sarcastic, demeaning and spiteful. What we don’t realize is that our thoughts and words affect how we feel about ourselves, even if we aren’t aware of it on a conscious level.  Loving another is an inner and outer process, and although we all have deep feelings and intense experiences, the present doesn’t represent the past and the person who we are with at moment represents no threat to us.

“Passive aggressive behavior is when you express your anger, but it’s not directed at the person you are mad at. You might use sarcastic humor, slam doors, or kick the dog. You are aggressive in that you actively express your anger, but you are passive because your anger is directed at the source of your anger.”  Stuck: How to Mend and Move on from Broken Relationships ~ F. Remy Diederich

Are you a pot thrower?  Do you scream and scare people out of their wits just to get your point across that you’re angry?

AWARENESS EXERCISE

Write down the names of the people who you’ve recently reacted angrily or sarcastically to.  Then write down why you think these persons created this reaction in you.  In what way would you like this person to be different then the way they are?

Choose a specific situation in the recent past you remember fighting back with the same aggression you were confronted with.  What were the elements in the situation that caused you to react and to feel the emotions you did.  How would you have liked the situation to be different?

Look back at what you wrote in your first answer.  See if you can write down at least 3 good points about each person and three useful things you also learned about yourself from interacting with them.

Look over what you wrote regarding a specific situation. Reflect on it for a moment, close your eyes and write down what you see, and what you learned from the situation. Use this introspective moment to help you notice what upsets you and see how to change them.

TREATING CANDIDA

“According to Healthy Healing, an alternative healing reference by naturopathic doctor Linda Rector-page, Candidiasis is a state of inner imbalance, not a germ, but, or dis-ease. Stress and lack of rest aggravate this condition in a body that is already out of balance.” Healthy Healing is an excellent book that I highly recommend, along with its companion book, Cooking for Healthy Healing”. Life! ~by Louise L. Hay

Definitely get yourself some high potency probiotics (acidophilius) and take it 20 minutes before breakfast or on an empty stomach. Also buy some glutamine, it acts as a gut barrier and helps to prevent ‘leaky gut’ or candida from moving through your gut wall.

Many people today cannot tolerate lactose but in yogurt the lactose is removed during fermentation.  Yogurt in your diet will raise the natural killer T-cells and helps to block carcinogens (cancer causing agents) from developing.

Other herbs and food groups to try…

There are plenty of herbs one can take for candida, the best said to be Oregano oil, which is very antiseptic and kills candida as well as parasites.

Onions and garlic have been used for centuries for their antibiotic like qualities, known to fight bacteria, viruses and intestinal parasites.

Green plants (cereal grasses, like barley and wheat grass. plus parsley, kale, collards, dandelion greens, watercress, romaine lettuce, cabbage, kelp and other seaweeds have exceptional value in the treatment of candida.

In Chinese Medicine it is said that ‘cold and dampness’ slows the body’s circulation (chi) and weakens the spleen; when this happens, the energy we get from food isn’t absorbed as well or circulated to our tissues. It is suggested to cut down on cold and raw foods, especially when you have Candida, until it’s under control. What you want is to heat and dry your digestive organs.  Ginger, cinnamon, nutmeg, parsley, cardamon and pepper are known as ‘warm’ herbs you can add to your favorite foods.

To treat candida, nutritionists recommend eliminating sugar, artificial sweeteners, breads, pastries, cookies, yeasts, dairy products, fruit, tea, coffee, vinegars and tobacco, for about three months. In three months the immune system has the ability to rehabilitate itself and a strong immune system can keep the candida population in check. If you can afford it, I highly recommend seeing a naturopathic or qualified nutritionist to help you.

We need “Sour Power” foods (grapefruit, sour cherry, apricot), along with those that contain healing sulphur (garlic, onions, mustard, curry, ginger, apricot, eggs, asafoetida), and foods rich in lymph and mood-supporting serotonin and zinc (turkey, lamb, flaxseed, sunflower seed, fish oil, bitter chocolate).  We also need high fiber gluten-free grains (quinoa, psyllium, flax, oats, wild rice). Also beneficial are low glycemic index vegetables (asparagus, broccoli, cucumber, swiss chard), high antiparasitic foods (zucchini, garlic, pumpkin seed), and peroxidase-rich foods (horseradish, parsnips, pears) that support the restoration of endocrine and immune recovery. In addition, sufferers of gut dysbiosis should avoid refined wheat, MSG, chicken, canola oil, and hydrogenated fats such as margarine. –  http://vitalitymagazine.com/article/be-good-to-your-guts/

*It’s only been recently discovered by Dr. Habba, that gallbladder problems could mimic the causes of IBS.  People who experience violent diarrhea immediately after or during a meal, (especially fatty foods) may be suffering from Habba Syndrome caused by an ‘irritable’ gallbladder.

Metaphysically, little annoyances, emotions or attitudes can irritate and create an imbalance in the gallbladder.  People affected most are those who don’t like changes, especially to their daily habits and those who are overly stressed by tests and exams.  You could say their great anxiety ‘wrenches’ their bowels.

The liver is the organ that produces bile salts when you eat (bile salts help to digest fat) but when the gallbladder’s upset it doesn’t process bile well, causing the body to work feverishly to dilute the bile by adding water in the intestinal tract – the reaction – violent trots.

Manic depressive people (bi-polar) could characterize this….another article to look at in the near future. 11/29/2013

Dr. Habba has his own website but to be honest, About.com makes it easier to understand.

“The most common gastrointestinal disorder is IBS. Though it can affect just about anybody, the most common sufferers are between the ages of fifteen, and forty-five, with females being affected more than males.  There are many symptoms within the complex of IBS.  Not all patients have every symptom.  Sometimes there is intermittent difficulty in swallowing.  Acid can refux back up the esophagus from the stomach and cause heartburn, which is an acid taste or or an actual chemical burn.  The acid irritation may cause esophageal spasms and produce chest pain that can closely mimic cardiac pain.  This is labeled gastroesophageal reflux or GER.  Waves of nausea sometimes appear out of nowhere.  They can last for hours or for only a few seconds but in frequent, repetitive waves.  Gas and bloating are among the most common complains but just as high on the patient’s list is frequent constipation alternating with diarrhea”.  WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT FIBROMYALGIA ~ R. Paul St. Amand, M.D., and Claudia Craig Marek

Diana is a client and good friend of mine, who suffers from irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) .  When I asked her to describe how IBS felt physically….the first thing she said was “a constant squeezing cramping, nauseous feeling….like being on a ship rolling in the heavy seas”…then as she thought about it some more, asked me to imagine recovering from a bad case of the stomach flu, where you’re feeling better but still have cramps, loose bowels and ache all over.  Well, between the rolling waves and flu-like symptoms I was nauseously starting to get the picture.  She said “imagine those nauseous achy, cramping feelings always there, all the time as you try to carry on a normal life and pretend to everyone else, everything’s just fine.  IBS limits your life, I can’t remember the last time I went to the movies; you can’t go to certain restaurants because you can’t eat certain foods; traveling long distances is difficult and wherever you go there has to be a toilet nearby.”   Diana also has had headaches, backaches, and acid reflux with her IBS.

“This [irritable bowel syndrome] creates severe abdominal pain, gas, constipation and/or diarrhea.  This condition is not so much a problem with the intestines as with the nerves causing the muscles to contract and spasm.  Anxiety and emotional stress are undoubtedly a major cause, as are depression and feelings of hopelessness, helplessness and inadequacy.

As a child you may have learned to clench your abdomen when under stress, and this is still a natural reflex, causing the muscles to spasm. Alternatively, this is where you hold hidden fears and concerns, creating a distortion of the muscles.  There may be intense fear, a lack of confidence, or the nervousness that arises confronting unknown situations.  Relationships, also affect the colon, especially issues to do with intimacy and security.” YOUR BODY SPEAKS YOUR MIND ~ Deb Shapiro

THE GI TRACT

Looking for answers to understand the body/mind connection of IBS, I began the search of gaining insight into what could possibly cause the whole digestive system to go totally off whack.  Irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) is a gastrointestinal disorder where the nerves that control the muscles of the GI tract become overly active and sensitive.  The Gastrointestinal tract, also known as the alimentary system, begins at the mouth, then down the throat, esophagus, stomach and small and large intestines.  What this is telling us is that the action and movement of GI tract begins its journey at the mouth—where we ingest food and drink and—other people’s values, thoughts, beliefs, criticisms and judgments.   All these processes have to be churned, chewed, broken down and swallowed before entering the throat, the esophagus and then the stomach.

“Through the throat we ‘swallow’ our reality.  Difficulties in this area can therefore be associated with resistance or reluctance to accept our reality and take it in.  Food is what nourishes us and keeps us alive; it is a symbol of the nourishment in our world is often used to replace such qualities.  Yet how often were we told as children to ‘eat our words’, and thus to swallow our feelings?  As Serge King writes in Imagineering for Health,

We tend to associate food with ideas, as evidenced by such expressions as ‘food for thought’, ‘do you expect me to swallow that?’, ‘you’re feeding me a bunch of baloney’, that idea is unpalatable’, and ‘he was force-fed with the wrong ideas’, The throat, then, and the glands and organs in and around it, can swell up and get sore as a repressed response to ideas that are unacceptable”.  Deb Shapiro THE BODYMIND WORKBOOK

Louise Hay in her book YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE says… “THE THROAT represents our ability to “speak up” for ourselves, to “ask for what we want,” to say “I am,” etc. When we have throat problems, it usually means we do not feel we have the right to do these things.  We feel inadequate to stand up for ourselves”.

When we have problems with accepting, welcoming or refusing something given, the throat and the esophagus literally ‘choke up’; this could be related to the food you were given, the information you’re receiving from the people around you or the thoughts/emotions/beliefs you’re feeling.  Your emotions are greatly influenced by the feedback coming from your own body and from the world around you.

“In general, the throat is a symbol of what we swallow and what we can express.  It is tied to creativity.  Throat problems in any area can reflect unexpressed anger, stifled creativity, and obstinate stubbornness (a refusal to change or even be a little flexible).  It can also reflect a continual speaking with criticism, venom, and/or anger.  It can reflect an angry attitude of “when is it my turn?”

Problems in the throat area should be examined in relation to the specific area.  The larynx, for example, is the voice box, but it also aids in swallowing.  If this is the problem area, are we having trouble swallowing what is being expressed to us?  Are we stifling and swallowing our words when we should be speaking out?  Are we expressing ourselves inappropriately? Are we afraid to speak up? Are others doing the speaking for you?  Do you not feel free to speak of your desires, wishes, etc.”? THE HEALER’S MANUAL ~ Ted Andrews

The highly acidic stomach blends and predigests all that we’ve swallowed (food, thoughts, criticisms, emotions) and ejects them into the duodenum.  In the duodenum there’s a dramatic change in atmosphere from the strong hydrochloric acid secreted by the cells of the stomach—there’s mucus everywhere! The duodenum is the place where both bile from the gallbladder and hormones from the pancreas enter the gastrointestinal tract.   Specialized hormones secreted from the pancreas and gallbladder help to change the acid from the stomach to a more alkaline solution—if they didn’t, the acid from the stomach would literally burn through the duodenum and the intestines.

“All stomach disorders are the manifestation of a failure or refusal to “stomach” a person or situation that you fear or cannot tolerate.  You resist new ideas, especially those of others. It is also difficult for you to deal with someone or something that contradicts your plans, habits, or ways of doing things. You criticize easily (inwardly) and this prevents you from letting go.  Your Body’s Telling You: Love Yourself! Lise Bourbeau

The intestines are the largest internal organs of the human body; the small intestine measures at least twenty-one feet in length, the large intestine, approximately five feet in length.

“The intestinal mucous membrane (particularly in the small intestine) is characterized by its numerous coils, which increase the surface in contact with the chyme (food reduced to a pulp by the stomach), optimizing the absorption of nutrients.  In the small intestine, there is constant movement: the chyme is re-mixed up to sixteen times a minute.  The intestine molts.  The cells on its inner surface are renewed every two days.  It is a hypersensitive transmitter-receiver of emotions: a hundred million neurons link it to the brain—a super connection. That is why  you “feel it in your gut”.  Understanding the Messages of YOUR BODY, How to Interpret Physical and Emotional Signals to Achieve Optimal Health ~ Jean-Pierre Barral D.O.

The lower section of the GI tract is the large intestine (colon and rectum), which is made up of 4 sections—the ascending colon, which joins the small intestines, the transverse colon, the descending colon, and the sigmoid colon which is s-shaped.  The colon is actually coiled in a single large loop beginning at the lower right side of the abdomen, passing upward and crossing under the liver and stomach to the left side, and then leading downward to the rectum.  When the colon isn’t working the way it should, waste in the large intestine backs up, becomes toxic and releases the toxins into the bloodstream—physically it’s a feeling of being bloated, stuffed, constipated or generally down in the dumps.

LARGE INTESTINE

Imbalance: crying spells, confusion, irritation, frustration, stagnation and anger. Thinking  you can’t do anything right, wanting to run away and hide from the world. Feeling that you are too different and that no one understands you. Difficulty seeing other people’s point of view. Dogmatically defending your position in arguments. Extremely sensitive, thin-skinned. The Secret Language of Your Body ~ By Inna Segal

“THE COLON represents our ability to let go, to release that which we no longer need.  The body, being in the perfect rhythm and flow of life, needs a balance of intake, assimilation and elimination.  It is only our fears that block the releasing of the old.

Even if constipated people are not actually stingy, they usually do not trust that there will ever be enough.  They hold on to old relationships that give them pain.  They are afraid to throw out clothes that have been in the closet for years because they might need them some day.  They stay in sitting jobs, or never give themselves pleasure, because they must save for that rainy day.  We do not rummage in last night’s garbage to find today’s meal.  Learn to trust the process of life to always bring you what you need.” YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE ~ Louise Hay

A healthy gastrointestinal tract can metabolize or eliminate many pollutants that come into your body, but if you suffer constipation, accumulated toxins can become stored in your system and as you eat more chemically based foods, (processed foods) they begin to interact with those that are already there.  Colon cancer is on the rise and its main cause is from accumulated toxic waste.

We now know that feelings that aren’t digested turn into a heavy congestive residue.  Emotions that become stagnant also collect in different areas of the body causing the digestive system to falter as well as the surrounding organs. Most of our undigested issues, emotions and other stresses and anxieties are known to collect in the abdominal area. This lower region the body can become very toxic when it is forced to hold onto feelings and issues because we’re afraid of dealing with them.

Many people with IBS know something’s gone haywire in their bodies—something’s not working the way it should—or they’re reacting to foods in ways they shouldn’t react.  Usually and in most cases, the problem is not what you think the problem is.   The problem in most cases isn’t on the outside, it’s on the inside—scientists have proven we have one hundred million sensory (feeling) receptors outside the body but on the inside we have ONE HUNDRED BILLION sensory receptors constantly picking up thoughts, feelings and memories inside your cells.  Your body is one big energetic system—traumas, addictions, depression etc., are all memories recorded inside your cells.

Thinking on the billions of sensory receptors inside the body, I traced one of the longest nerves in the body called the ‘vagus nerve’, which runs from the lower part of the brain, down the base of the spine, branching out its nerve fibers to the heart, respiratory, stomach and intestinal tract.  What relation does the vagus nerve have with hormone-sensitive cells?

 IBS AND THE VAGUS NERVE

“…the most fundamentally important elements in the parasympathetic nervous system, the vagus nerve, which is the most complex of all of our nerves. In Latin, Vagus means “wandering”. It is termed so because from its origin in the brain stem it spreads nerve fibers to the throat and upper body, and through these nerve fibers signals wander to and fro between the body and the brain. In short, the vagus nerve connects the brain to everything from the tongue, pharynx, vocal chords, lungs, heart, stomach and intestines to different glands that produce enzymes and hormones, influencing digestion, metabolism, and much more.

The vagus nerve’s considerable influence on your lungs and heart and the connection to your brain is quite interesting. This trinity, brain-heart-lungs, rules your body and governs your mind. The key to managing your state of mind and stress level lies in being able to activate the calming parasympathetic pathways of your nervous system on command. Typically, the will cannot control this part of the nervous system, but if you hold your breath for a brief moment and then slowly exhale, the vagus nerve is stimulated bringing peace to your body and mind.”

The Nervous System and the Vagus Nerve http://breatheology.com/services/articles/health/the-nervous-system-and-the-vagus-nerve

The vagus nerve, part of the parasympathetic nervous system has a major importance in the process of our digestion.  Not only does it travel from brain to gut—it also travels from gut to brain—a two-way communication system.  When the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems are balanced, we easily and effortlessly adapt to the many changes and sensations experienced inside and outside the body. But when the sympathetic nervous system over-reacts, or is in distress, the vagus nerve becomes overly sensitive gravely affecting our whole digestive system or GI tract.

“The vagus nerve can be activated in many ways—with pressure, electrical charge, by drugs, and by physiological processes, such as eating defecating, or motion sickness. Activation of the vagus nerve can make you faint—by switching on part of the brain that lower blood pressure and slow your heart rate. This is called a vaso-vagal attack. Sudden pressure on the vagus nerve, where it winds around the great artery in the neck, the carotid artery, or where it originates in the belly, can also make you feel faint.  Other activation of the vagus nerve can make you vomit. This is why if you are punched in the abdomen, you feel faint and nauseous. The vagus nerve has a lot to do with the gut—with the stomach, with digestion, with the liver. It is the great nerve cable that mediates those sensations that we associate with ‘gut reactions’. Its role in digestion was one clue that pointed to the vagus nerve as a route by which cytokines in the belly could signal the brain. ” The Balance Within: The Science Connecting Health With Emotion ~ Esther M. Stemberg, M.D.

IS IBS A NEUROLOGICAL CONDITION

“Because of rich connections to the autonomic nervous system, the digestive organs are common sites of psychosomatic illnesses. Many IBS sufferers have some type of psychiatric disorder: their IBS becomes more severe under stress.  Crohn’s disease has also been linked to emotional distress.  Some panic attack sufferers also report bowel disorders, with intestinal triggers starting in the sympathetic nervous system.  Other illnesses, too, such as cancer, adult-onset (type 2) diabetes, and rheumatoid arthritis are being studied for psychosomatic relationships.

Experts such as Michael Gershon, MD, propose that the stomach actually contains a second brain, rich with neurotransmitters of its own, which triggers IBS.  Gershon says IBS is an example of the gut working in isolation, though he recognizes the brain-gut axis such as when “butterflies in the stomach: occur as a result of the brain sending a message of anxiety to the gut, which sends messages back to the brain that it’s unhappy.” Cyndi Dale ~ The Subtle Body – An Encyclopedia of your Energetic Anatomy

Patients with IBS, have been tested and shown to have increased colon muscle activity…a breeding ground of uncertainty, insecurity and anxiety.  (Anxiety is usually caused from a stressful event but can also occur without provocation.) When IBS sufferers were asked what they thought brought it on psychologically, change was number one on the list, of the many that followed, came loss of sleep, worry, self-doubt, unexpected losses, indecisiveness, confusion, fear, conflict, anger, ordinary life pressures and a feeling of helplessness.

IBS sufferers often have a tendency to suppress their feelings and their own creative abilities.  Feeling insecure they’re afraid of taking risks and will do everything to ignore or run away from problems—running away has many connotations—it could mean physically moving from place to place; sleeping all the time; getting sick; or constantly keeping oneself busy.

The human body is made up of a complex network of energy fields that work together as one unique powerful system affecting us spiritually, emotionally, mentally and physically.  Everything that affects the body affects the mind and everything that affects the mind, affects the body.  Many health ailments that crop up later in our lives usually have to do with painful memory patterns programmed in our cells that make our bodies tense and in an up-tight survival mode—unable to stay in the present our minds jump back and forth between the past and the future, forcing adrenaline to start racing through our bodies.  Under this intense stress, our bodies release ten times the amount of cortisol and adrenaline.  Digestive problems such as diarrhea, constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, bloating, gas or indigestion are usually part of the symptoms.  Our minds too are like virtual hurricanes, spinning out of control.

When the nerves of the sympathetic nervous system become excited, they alert the inner portion of the adrenal glands to send out large quantities of adrenaline (epinephrine) and noradrenaline (norepinehrine) into the bloodstream.  Both these hormones create the classic “fight or flight” response, with rapid blood sugar release, increased muscle tension, improved mental alertness and slower digestion.

“Symptoms of the sympathetic and parasympathetic nervous systems out of control (also known as Dysautonomia) “can include frequent, vague but disturbing aches and pains, faintness (or even actual fainting spells) fatigue and inertia, severe anxiety attacks, rapid heartbeat, (tachy-cardia), hypotension, (low blood pressure), poor exercise tolerance, gastrointestinal symptoms such as irritable bowel syndrome, sweating, dizziness, blurred vision, numbness and tingling, anxiety and (quite understandably) depression.  Other symptoms include enhanced pain sensitivity, disturbed sleep and brain fog. Living Well With Chronic Fatigue Syndrome and Fibromyalgia ~ Mary J Shomon

 IBS MISDIAGNOSIS

It’s no wonder doctors have a hard time assessing IBS within the abdominal organs.  Many IBS patients have been through rigorous testings: ultrasounds, endoscopies, colonoscopies, specialists, food allergists, etc…all in an attempt to find and get rid of something that isn’t even there.  From the quote above, we learn that many people with Chronic Fatigue and Fibromyalgia are known to suffer IBS symptoms.  In fact, in many cases the cause of IBS is Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia.

“Contraction and relaxation of [the] intestinal wall muscles are what propel raw materials on their way to the next digestive station to face the action of various hormones and enzymes.  Quite likely the many intestinal glands share in the general problem of fibromyalgia and, along with the muscles prove inadequate for an ideal digestive sequence.  Constipation and diarrhea are like changing traffic signals for the stop and go prompting of the digestive and eliminative processes.  As you would imagine, this causes serious malfunction in the entire gastrointestinal tract, certainly enough to produce all the symptoms of irritable bowel syndrome”. WHAT YOUR DOCTOR MAY NOT TELL YOU ABOUT FIBROMYALGIA ~ R. Paul St. Amand, M.D., and Claudia Craig Marek

Another misdiagnosis with IBS is endometriosis.  Endometriosis is a female condition where the lining of the uterus, known as endometrial lining grows outside of the uterus in the abdomen and pelvic area.

“….many recent studies have highlighted the need to consider endometriosis during the evaluation of unexplained digestive complaints such as IBS.  They note that because endometrial tissue can sometime attach itself to the bowel, certain symptoms that are usually present in IBS – such as abdominal pain, distension and people with IBS.

In light of the misdiagnosis and mistreatment of their illness, the women in our study reflect on the ways in which they had made sense of their own experiences.  Many of them began to question their own perceptions of the pain and symptoms because they had been told many times that’s ‘Nothing is wrong.’ …..The women in our study often felt let down by their doctors, they had turned to them for help and had placed their trust in them and yet they did not receive what they needed.  In most cases, it had taken several years to get a correct diagnosis, even though some of the women had sought opinions from different doctors and had visited hospitals many times”. The Daily Telegraph: Ibs Dancey and Backhouse

Another cause of IBS could be Candida Albicans.  The intestinal tract contains small amounts of this yeast but sometimes antibiotics, birth control pills and a high carbohydrate diet can cause an overgrowth of this yeast, causing a condition called candidiasis.  Candidiasis has been linked to allergies, migraines, vaginitis, irritable bowel syndrome, indigestion, asthma and many more ailments.

HEALING IBS

When Diana first came to see me, she mentioned feeling weary, worn-out and nervously stressed.  She’d had a tough week with her IBS as well as finding herself caught up, emotionally in family matters that couldn’t be avoided. Diana also told me she’d had this dull and throbbing headache for at least three days now.

As we know, IBS can have a tremendous strain on the body’s reserves, hindering its own natural defenses and affecting its metabolism and weakening the immune system.   Usually when we’re upset or overly irritated about something, the whole digestive system doesn’t work as it should.  Food entering the intestines isn’t always broken down completely, and as a result it reaches the large intestines in a highly undigested state.  When this happens, billions of hungry bacteria attack and break-down the food causing flatulence and gas build-up that in some cases becomes almost intolerable.    As well, the lymph system and blood circulation are reduced, making it more difficult for the body to absorb necessary vitamins and minerals to keep it healthy.

Usually when a person comes to see me, the first thing I do is look at their overall level of energy.  When I shake their hand is it cold/hot or clammy.  Just that touch can give a healer subtle perceptions of the different energy flows in the body.  I also look at them physically, their stance, how they support themselves…are they standing upright or are they slouched.  I also look at their eyes, hair and especially their skin, which is one of the greatest indicators of a person’s health.  Then, as they relax, I just let them talk, asking questions here and there, like when their ailment started.  I don’t assume at this point, allowing the client to lead as I just sit quietly writing down their symptoms or mentally recording them in my mind.  After getting a clearer picture of what’s happening now, I ask if any of this could be related to illnesses from the past.

When Diana and I first met, she looked spacey and anxious; her adrenaline looked racey her eyes blood shot…something I’ve noticed when a person’s creative center is blocked.  Also pressure behind the eyes can cause the eyes delicate capillaries to leak blood…with IBS, this could be from gas buildup in the digestive tract.  Mental constipation is another possibility.

When we were done with the preliminaries I did a body scan of Diana’s energy…her whole body felt emotionally wired, erratic.  Her throat and stomach area were on fire; her abdominal area felt congested, tense, bloated and hot to the touch.  There seemed to be a see-saw of emotions that Diana was working hard at stifling and suppressing…the problem with this is at some point and time they will find a way out and when they do they’re like a wild beast on the loose.  When this happens, constipation and diarrhea can take turns in rapid shifts and as a consequence make us feel totally exhausted.

Diana also suffered from severe heartburn.  I’ve categorized heartburn with that of the perfectionist.  Heartburn can happen from an attack on our self esteem, a feeling of being trapped, competitiveness, a hostile environment, or anxious and overwhelmed by responsibilities.  Chronic anxiety and worry is closely associated with IBS and ulcers and is associated with perfectionism.  Perfectionists are very hard on themselves and others, demanding the best at all times.  They find fault in almost everything they do—they find fault in their appearance, their homes, relationships, children, clothes, cars—they can frustrate us to no end with their insistence that everything has to be perfect.

Perfectionists need to loosen their standards, leave the past and move into unfamiliar ground—they need to let go of their fear and move into the unknown.  They have to stop manipulating others and their world where they feel they’re in control.  They need to practice gratitude to help them relax and be happy with life as it is.   Once they know what beliefs and behaviors keep them stuck, they have a greater sense of adventure, trust and enjoyment.  They let go of fear and self-doubt and with motivation regain a zest for life.

  “A Meditation for Perfectionists

Okay, I give up.  I’m ready to stop running the entire world.  I’d like to rest.  Please (please please) help me stop being responsible for everything.  Please help to relax and be happy with life as it is.  And, by the way, thanks for all the wonderful love and relationships I have” . Daphne Rose Kingma

The body is a remarkable healing machine…at times it can be thrown off course but we can, through diligence and awareness bring it back to balance.

After her Reiki treatment, Diana was much more relaxed with a much happier expression on her face.  We talked about her coming back and looking at other treatments.  In the clinic where I was working, several Alternative therapies were available including a naturopathic doctor whom I introduced Diana to.  The naturopathic doctor spoke to Diana, explaining to her that most IBS patients have high levels of cortisol in their blood and overworked adrenals.  She talked to Diana about breath awareness and self-awareness to slow her restless system down.  She spoke of meditation, of going within and finding the peaceful depths of her being…there Diana will find strength and balance, enabling her to transform old habits of restlessness and tension into new patterns. Both Diana and I were nodding our heads in agreement…we’d just been talking about that earlier.

I think most people will agree with me that traditional ways of treating ailments aren’t working us very well.  The body itself consists of four levels of healing…spirit, mental, emotional and physical.  All 4 need to be implemented to help us heal and integrate them in our lives.  If we skip or neglect one, the body won’t be properly balanced.

“Although you likely view your illness as an enemy, you should let it become your ally.” Making it an ally by doing the hard internal work of sorting through the emotional and psychological components of your illness will, when combined with the treatments for the physical factors involved, result in lasting recovery”. Dr. Teitelbaum

It was suggested Diana have a stool analysis to see how her digestion and intestines were working.  A stool analysis will also indicate how much residual fats and vegetable fibers are in her feces and if perhaps she needed a digestive enzyme to help her.  The naturopath suggested an organic greens concentrate as a drink each day, which not only provided her body with full natural nutrients, it contains large amounts of chlorophyll which is an easy way to assimilate magnesium in the body.  Vitamin B6 was suggested for Diana’s immune and nervous system…and its ability as an aid for digesting fat and proteins.  Also B6 is essential in the production of prostaglandin, which is necessary for normal thymus function.  For her problems with sleep possibly as little as 5 mg of melatonin would help to rebalance her sleep/wake cycles.

Diana was also told to ‘move her body’, the naturpath explained that the lymphatic system of the body has no pump of its own, it relies on body movement to transport lymphathic cells throughout the body, as well as release toxins.  Rhythmic bouncing like jumping rope is one quick way to increase lymph flow…another way is Donna Eden’s lymphathic flush and three thump exercises,  which are provided as videos.

 Donna Eden Three Thumps https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YB6WoCDJ5RM

 Donna Eden Lymphathic Flush https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=45tLuqMrup0

 Mary Sullivan Lymphatic Brushing https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E5PMosLe8lg

Another thing Diana was told was to ‘bulk up’ her diet.  The naturopath told her, if you’re eating the typical ‘western diet’ then you’re probably consuming a lot of processed foods.  A diet with lots of roughage and fiber like fruits and vegetables will help to get the recommended 25 grams of fiber a day.  If bloating is a problem with some ‘gassy’ foods, try soaking them overnight before cooking, this seems to help.

Other good sources of dietary fiber are whole-grain breads, pastas, brown rice, beans and bran.  But she was warned, go slowly, introducing fiber could make your symptoms worse which will improve within two of three weeks if you stick to it.    Unfortunately some people with IBS are gluten intolerant…if Diana thought this may be the case, she could cut gluten out of her diet for a few days to see whether her symptoms improve.

We talked about triggers to IBS, like artificial sweeteners, sugar, lactose, coffee, eggs and more.

And as we already knew, Diana needed to find ways to naturally reduce her stress and anxiety.  As she said, we’re working on it.

BREATHING MEDITATION

Breathing meditations help to soften the belly muscles by allowing the breath to move the diaphragm down which allows the lower organs to move outward.   When we breath into the feelings and sensations within our abdominal area, we experience different feelings and sensations in our stomach and intestines such as rumbling, gurgling, churning, pulsing, tingling and warmth.

Belly breathing helps alleviate symptoms of constipation and indigestion because it releases incredible amounts of blocked energy—congestion will dissipate, digestion will improve and the whole abdominal area will feel positive energy returning.  When awareness flows in we immediately experience a sense of relaxation and a lighter, freer flow of energy because we’re listening to our bodies more closely than we ever did before.  We’re aware of our presence, our form and our communication with our body and our immediate surroundings.   Belly breathing helps to relieve the stresses we hold onto in different parts of our bodies—even in the upper back and shoulders.

Breathing into the feelings and sensations we experience within our intestines will help to awaken the consciousness within the abdominal area.  With practice we’ll experience a whole range of feelings and sensations such as rumbling, churning, bubbling, pulsing, tingling, warmth. The healing intelligence within our bodies will help to alleviate the symptoms of constipation and digestive disorders such as IBS and crohn’s disease.  Congestion will dissipate, digestion will improve and the whole abdominal area will begin to feel more and more alive. Breathing deeply and fully into the abdomen helps to relieve the many stresses we hold in different parts of our bodies.

“Breathing into the abdomen or other parts of our bodies can bring anxiety and other unsettling feelings up to the surface. Many of these feelings and issues have been held in the body for years.  The unpleasant feelings will dissipate as we continue to breathe into them. These feelings need to be digested so that we can develop a greater awareness and become more present in our bodies.

Our rigid body armor will begin to dissolve whenever we breathe into the tension that we holding within any part of our body. We can further this process by breathing into nay subsequent feelings that emerge.  The frozen emotions will become more fluid and this will make it easier for us to process them. Consistent daily practice will enable us to dissolve the stresses, process our emotions and clear stagnant energies before they start to harm our bodies. Processing the stresses and emotions stimulates our minds creative and adaptive problem solving capabilities. Our minds will begin to operate more efficiently so that we can become more highly functional and that will open up a whole new range of possibilities”. Emergence: Heal your body and mind Ben Oofana

Continued from Part 1 & 2 Metaphysically Understanding Arthritis

Fiona was scheduled for another Reiki session the following week.  She called to cancel the appointment at the beginning of that week due to fighting a bad cold.

Sometimes, when a person is healing and releasing a buildup of toxins from the body, he or she may contract flu like symptoms, as the toxins find a way out of the body. People with a great deal of accumulated stress or emotional blocks can find everything stirred up especially after the first and/or second treatment.  Many people don’t understand that these symptoms are actually the body healing itself.  All pain experienced is pain leaving the body.

DISTANCE/ABSENT HEALING.

I asked Fiona if she’d like distant healing for the week she was away with a cold.  She agreed and we set a time for the following evening when she would be turning in  for the night.

Distant healing is about empathically connecting and creating a spiritual link to another person who is at a place other than where you are.  Distant healing transcends time, space or shape…..it doesn’t matter how near or far the client is……all that is required is a desire, and love/compassion (not pity) to heal another.  Intent is of the utmost importance as well as meeting the comfort level of the person receiving the healing.

Every healer discovers and develops his or her own unique way of receiving and sending energy.  After learning various methods they find what they like best or even develop their own from what they’ve gathered along the way.

All that’s needed is a client’s full name, birth date and where they reside.  Without this, Reiki or other healing modalities will have no place to focus and just won’t have enough power to fill a body with healing energy.

Sometimes distance healing can be better and more powerful than hands-on healing.  Connecting spirit to spirit, opens the heart, creating a glowing network of invisible threads of unconditional energy.  Absent healing is even more effective when the client cooperates with the healer and is in a relaxed state at the time or sleeping…..this bridges the gap of our humanness….it’s when miracles can happen.

No absent healing has ever been the same for me.  Distant and hands-on healing shares in a unique mutual exchange of energy….each one is a mirror, causing healer and healee to take a deeper look at her or himself.   This higher wisdom/vibration helps us to hear and see truth more clearly.  Every healing has a message for all involved.

FIONA’S DISTANT HEALING

In Part 2 of this previous segment, we discussed the Alta Major, located at the base of the skull.  Its color is magenta, a mixture of red, green and violet. When the Alta Major is balanced, we have the ability to see and understand a situation spiritually; it allows us to step back and see the bigger picture.  But when unbalanced we lose the sense of excitement in our lives.  We shut down and either blame someone else for our problems or go into denial.   This form of denial blocks our energy system. This is what I felt when establishing a connection with Fiona.  A great many of her fears were linked to her history.

THE HEALING CONNECTION

As I relaxed and centered myself, my mind went into a kind of daydream state gently focusing on Fiona’s form until it became clear.  Knowing what Fiona looked like made it easy to zero in on Fiona’s physical body.  If we’d never met, my imagination would have kicked in, visualizing and sensing an energy body of light lying before me.  This is my ‘anchor point’ to return to if I happen to lose my focus.

Opening my inner awareness for any impressions, the first thing I usually ‘see’ is energy highways flowing from the client’s chakras.  These highway of energies,  criss-cross and  intersect throughout the body, creating a cascade of light (aura) that emits beyond its boundaries. Surrounding the aura, energy dark patches or shadows might be seen.  Making a mental note of the areas, allows me to return and explore them further.

Returning to  Fiona’s throat chakra, I felt as if I had been bumped up against a wall.  This area was packed with a whole lot of clutter and a lot of commotion.  Her heart chakra was congested to the point that I felt squeezed into a tight corner, unable to move or breathe.   Sprouting from her body were lines or cords each one making a connection Fiona had with someone.  Some were dark and stiff, others brightly glowing.  The darker ones symbolized a unhealthy connection; they drained Fiona of her energy and weighted heavily upon her.  Intuivtively I felt they could be the cause of her tension as well as arthritic pain.

Where there should have been brightness, a damp mist seemed to hang around her stomach, (Solar Plexus Chakra), which slowly dissipated around the hip area or 1st chakra. Her abdomen felt tight and distended.

As I focused on sending the distant healing symbol of Reiki, it transformed into a liquid light of energy, attaching itself to a huge, gossamer network.  Adding the Power Symbol, tiny bubbles of light bathed the delicate strands with soft glowing light.   As the light grew stronger, it was joined by another light that seemed to move up from the earth along Fiona’s right side and then circulated down her left side and back from where it came.  When witnessing this happening, I intuitively knew this healing session was at its max.  I could visually see this higher vibration clearing Fiona’s energy.  Golden scissors started cutting the dark stiff cords, one by one loose.  Some had strong emotional attachments and started to sprout back.  Visualizing the Sei-Hei-Ki, helped zap them clear into outer space.

Continuing to use the Distant Healing Symbol, I asked for the healing to repeat itself every 2 hours for the next 7 days and then bowed in reverence and respect for this sacred moment.

 FIONA’S DREAM

This absent healing had quite an impact on Fiona’s life and her dreams.  I didn’t find out until I saw her again, 2 weeks later.

Fiona told me as the absent healing took place she fell into a very deep sleep.  In a dream, she met a Hermit who presented her with several pieces to a very large puzzle.  The puzzle when finished was supposed to describe her whole life, from its beginning to present.  Though she was tired and didn’t feel well, Fiona reached out and picked up the pieces trying to make them fit together.  No matter how hard she tried the puzzle kept falling apart.  And Fiona was falling apart too, crying but still determined to make all the pieces fit together.  This was when Fiona heard a voice ask her “Why are you trying to do this yourself.”   She remembered answering angrily back “how else am I supposed to do it.”   In fact she remembered speaking these words out loud as she started waking from the dream.

When Fiona recounted this dream to me, she told me it felt as if it had been imprinted on her body/mind and soul.  “No matter where I was or what I did, the dream kept flowing up into my consciousness.  It wouldn’t leave me alone.”

DREAM INTERPRETATION

Fiona and I did speak right after the absent healing, so she knew what had been heard and seen visually . Somehow I felt the distant healing and the dream were related.  The old energies hiding out in her heart were forcing her to deny, doubt and undermine her intuition and power. I told Fiona to seriously look back and see when she had given someone the right to make her decisions and decide what was best for her.  It was a path that definitely wasn’t hers.

When logic can’t get a grip on something, we go into a tizzy and when this happens our intuitive side is unable to grab the attention of our conscious or unconscious minds.  Fiona’s Base, Sacral, Alta Major and Throat Chakras were off balance.  The Alta Major when balanced helps us to assemble and bring together different aspects of the Self.  It allows us to give and receive energy without even thinking about it.  Not being able to put the puzzle pieces together Fiona agreed it seemed to say she was cut of from the Divine’s great source of energy.  The emotional feelings of others, was influencing her progress.  Feeling sick and tired symbolized a feeling of weakness and insecurity.  Without a focus, Fiona was drifting aimlessly in a world symbolized by the hermit.

You have to remove yourself from your personal drama”, and realize it is all symbolic.

I told Fiona to seriously look back and see what energies supported her well being and those that were counterproductive.  She also needed to clear her past and devote her energy on the relationships that made her feel good and those that were stealing her energy.  As she did this, it would attract interesting people with similar intentions and goals into her life.  All the people we know and meet are reflections of our inner self.

Fiona questioned the last sentence.  To demonstrate I gave her a crystal and asked her to look at the many different facets in it.  Just as the crystal has many faces, so do we.   We are in fact a collection of multiple personalities.  Some are angry, manipulative and critical; some are beautiful, inspiring and loving.  Some are hidden from us and have a life of their own.  When emotionally charged, a personality (archetype) projects out, attracting energies of the same kind.  The goal or reason is to heal and embrace these aspects of ourselves and in so doing find their hidden treasure.

We talked more of her friendships and relationships and how some of them showed the imbalances in her life.  We spoke of how our own childhood experiences attracted a partner that made us reenact our childhood injuries.  Fiona saw her husband as one who was retrained, self-contained and buried his feelings and desires.  “Oh my god, she said, that’s a splitting image of me!”  Fiona knew she also had a habit of distancing herself from others.  Again we talked of the Hermit whose life is admired for his independence but who lives virtually alone in his fortress, avoiding the pain of being vulnerable and then rejected.

IN SUMMARY

All of us have lived many lives and gathered experiences along the way.  This has allowed our soul to understand, integrate and process the information for us to use in another time again.  This leads us pursue more answers which puts us in sync with other human beings, angels and guides.  It puts us in touch with our own Family of Light where events and circumstances are created to move us beyond the limitations of fear.  They help us to heal various aspects of ourselves.

Integrating all this information was not an easy process for Fiona.  At first she was blasted with chaos and confusion.  Many of her archetypical energies (multi personalities) were in conflict with themselves.  In fact some of these conflicts were not understood until something happened further down the road to reveal their meaning. She is still discovering everything we see in the outer world has an inner meaning for us.

Fiona did go to counseling and learnt more about her-self.   She changed her diet, exercised and lost some weight.  As she changed so too did her husband and family.  “There are still struggles to deal with but not as many as before”.  Some friends fell by the wayside and although it was painful to lose them, she learned to  intuitively understand it was their time to go.

Fiona is still amazed how the Reiki healings were able to see right through her defenses and began the profound change of embracing her own life.  Her arthritic pain has lessened a great deal, though it still reminds her it’s there when the seasons change or there’s dampness in the air.

“I learned about psychosomatic diseases and arthritis in particular from personal experience. For a number of years I was under psychoanalysis, a process by which the emotional deprivations of early childhood can be overcome and some degree of emotional maturity attained. Though I had rarely been sick before, this period I had so many psychosomatic illnesses – migraine headaches, sinus “infections,” “hay fever,” skin rashes, emotionally induced colds, arthritis, digestive distrubances, and many others – that my unconscious mind seemed determined to teach me there were causes of illness aside from poor nutrition. Each bout of sickness, however, lasted only a day or two.

When a kindly woman analyst took the role of loving mother to me, mentioned that I was angry because my mother had died, I felt her remark utterly ridiculous. Yet the day she told she was going to Europe, I developed severe arthritis; my jaws became acutely sore and every joint in both hands grew red, swollen, and excruciatingly painful. She helped me understand that the impending separation had unconsciously reminded me of being taken away from my ill mother when I was ten days old, an experience which, relived later under hypnosis to allow further understanding had been a horrifying one. I learned that a tiny baby’s emotions are raw and violent and that its reaction to suffering is animalistic and primative anger; and I was overcome with an intense desire to bite and claw. Next I learned that the emotion I as child had wanted to express but could not had to be expressed before the psychosomatic illness would clear up. My arthritis disappeared as soon as I expressed these emotions by biting on chewing gum and caramel corn and by clawing the eyes out of imaginary enemies and faces made with finger paints on foolscap…..

The unconscious mind – the mind of the child within us – purposely induces many psychosomatic illnesses to prevent the expression of negative emotions which would keep us from being loved. To the small child’s way of thinking, it is better to become immobile or to produce arthritis in one’s self, than to allow bottled-up anger to explode.” Let’s Get Well ~ By Adelle Davis

WHAT IS ARTHRITIS

“ARTHRITIS is a dis-ease that comes from a constant pattern of criticism.  First of all, criticism of the self, and then criticism of other people.  Arthritic people often attract a lot of criticism because it is their pattern to criticize.  They are cursed with “perfectionism,” the need to be perfect at all times in every situation. ”  YOU CAN HEAL YOUR LIFE ~ Louise Hay

Before we look at the metaphysical causes, let’s look at what arthritis is.

Arthritis is a chronic degenerative disease that is sweeping across North America at an alarming rate. Well over three million people suffer from this disease and a large percentage of them are woman and children.

Arthritis is characterized by inflammation of the joints accompanied with stiffness and pain. The primary cause of inflammation is from a buildup of toxins within the body fluids and tissues.  Arthritis can escalate to severe degeneration of the joints, crippling and immoblizing movement.

There are many different kinds of arthritis based on the various symtoms and causes. The four common forms of arthritis: osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout and juvenile rheumatoid arthritis.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most common forms where cartilage and tissue deteriorates and hardens, sometimes creating painful bone spurs (a bony growth on normal bone).  It affects the weight bearing joints, including the hips, knees, feet, fingers and spine.

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disease where the body’s immune system attacks the joints.  The first areas usually affected are the feet and hands…it can affect the wrist and fingers joints close to the palm as well as joints in the jaw, neck, shoulders, elbows, hips knees, ankles and toes. Fatigue may also be a symptom of anemia which often accompanies rheumatoid arthritis. The joint pain and stiffness may also cause fever, loss of appetite and weight.

Gout can be caused by a severe acute pain or tenderness in a joint and often afflicts the big toe.  Other areas affected can be the knees, ankles, feet, hands, wrists and fingers.  As it progresses, the affected joints become inflamed, red, swollen, hot and extremely sensitive to touch.  Gout was once known as the “rich man’s disease” as it’s been associated with rich food and alcohol.  But in truth, it affects us all.

Other disorders of the joints and connective tissue include: lupus, Sjogren’s syndrome, Reiter’s syndrome, and ankylosing spondylitis.

“ARTHRITIS – Holding onto anger and resentment from the past. Carrying guilt, remorse and shame. Difficulty in forgiving self and others. Complaining about life. Worrying, but not wanting to make changes. Feeling stuck and limited. THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF YOUR BODY: The Essential Guide to Health and Wellness ~ Inna Segal”

WHAT CAUSES ARTHRITIS

If you asked this question to a medical doctor, he’d probably say it’s hereditary combined with an unhealthy lifestyle.  If your work for example requires alot of heavy lifting, this may have created a great deal of  stress (wear and tear) on your weight-bearing joints (knees, wrists, hips, etc.)

I believe that doctors are aware arthritis can be caused by an allergic reaction to foods…the problem is, they don’t always tell us.  Some of the foods we eat all the time (e.g., sugar, caffeine, processed foods, alcohol, potatoes, tomatoes, animal fats, etc.) are the ones to which we could be allergic to.  Fats and carbohydrates known to ferment in the body, create an environment that invites Candida albicans, unhealthy bacteria, fungal and parasite growth.  Even toxic substances in the environment such as pesticides, artificial colorings and preservatives in foods, and chlorine and fluoride in the water can affect the joints, entering by way of the bloodstream triggering an arthritic reaction.

Why do allergies affect the joints in some people and not in others?  Because different people have different areas of weakness. The joints, muscles and ligaments in the body share nerve centers with different organs in the body….so an irritation in a certain organ can cause a problem in a certain joint.   Even emotional shocks and trauma such as fear, tension, stress, frustration, anger, and guilt all transit through the brain.  The brain incapable of holding all this information, passes it on to a certain organ.  When that organ becomes ‘chronically’ congested or weakened, it sends warning signals through the body via the nervous system. The problem is, we were either too busy or worried, upset, to pay attention to its warning signs.

In alternative healing, we look at the body energetically.  When an illness or dis-ease strikes,  something has caused a tremendous drain on the body’s energy reserves and immune system.    The body’s own natural defences have broken down, opening itself to an  invasion of  toxins, viruses and bacteria, assaulting its system.    Why?

Many of us don’t realize that every thought, word and action we say and do in life is transmitted via the etheric and nervous system to every organ, cell and molecule of the body.  In less than a second your energy system starts working towards your choices and actions.  If these are not congruent with your beliefs, goals and values, the result will be a physical or chemical imbalance in the body.

We are all motivated at a subconscious level to stay on the path of our purpose.   When we deviate or refrain from this path, for whatever reason, our inner being starts working against us, alerting us to look inside ourselves and at what we are avoiding, denying or resisting.  If we refuse to listen, we become anxious, stressed and plagued with fear and confusion.  When we deny what we feel, we feel trapped and become ungrounded.  Life feels chaotic.

With Arthritis we are torn at which direction to take.   The area most afflicted in the energy body is our liver and gallbladder meridan.  It is the energy of the liver that plans our next step and the direction we need to go in.    It also houses family guilt and the concerns of our most deepest self.  Guilt can make us very dependant upon another where every decision cannot be made without consulting our mentor or judge.  It’s as if we don’t trust our own creative expression; perhaps as a child we weren’t allowed to make our own decisions.  Now as an adult it’s difficult to constructively solve our problems.  We feel like a flop as a human being and we start bingeing out on food and alcohol for comfort.  But all that does is make us more stressed out and irritable.  The liver becomes congested and unable to detox the body.  Our digestive system becomes upset, the work of the intestines slow down, sapping our energy.

The gallbladder, located on the undersurface of the liver can get irritable and angry when things go screwy.  It is the first organ to react (anxiously or angrily) when we change our habits or surrounded by negative energy.

If the liver and gallbladder are out of balance so too are our body and emotions.  we experience extreme mood swings like withdrawing, then acting angrily. slamming doors. yelling, or even tracking mud in the house.

With arthritis the cartilage that covers the ends of the bone has a high water content (emotion) as well as a gel-like protein called collagen.  If there is an imbalance between these two, the joints become stressed, inflamed or damaged.  It’s as if the outer world and our inner world are a reflection of each other. And if this is true then our inner world is the main source of everything that happens to us in the outer world.

Edgar Cayce’s A.R.E. “Overview Of Rheumatoid Arthritis

http://www.edgarcayce.org/are/holistic_health/data/prrart3.html

ARTHRITIS AND THE INTESTINAL TRACT

“A majority of arthritis patients have some degree of abnormal digestive function, such as indigestion and constipation, and leaky gut syndrome is also common. Common causes of leaky gut syndrome include a diet high in fried foods, processed foods, inorganic meat products, and simple carbohydrates as well as excessive alcohol intake. Inronically, medications such as NSAIDS often used to relieve symptoms of discomfort assoicated with arthritis, also cause severe leaky gut. Toxins, viruses, candida, and parasite infetation are sometime implicated as well.” An Alternative Medicine Guide to Arthritis ~ By Ellen Kamhi, Eugene R. Zampieron

It is quite possible that a compromised intestinal tract is where arthritis begins.   If the filtration of the bowel wall is damaged, then improper proteins, fats, or sugars can begin to enter the circulation, causing toxins that would normally pass through the intestines to seep through the intestinal walls, entering the lymphatic system and invading the blood stream. The immune system, initially dispatched to get rid of the invaders somehow, instead starts destroying healthy tissue in the body.  The attack can target any areas, including the joints, (rheumatoid arthritis) the thyroid gland, nerve cells (multiple sclerosis) and other organs of the body. These toxins can also increase cholesterol and triglycerides in the blood  elevating platelet count and making the blood look more like tar instead of a liquid. Body fluids can only handle so many toxins before the lymphatic system and arteries becomes clogged.  When this happens the body is at risk of gaining excess weight, developing heart disease or a stroke and even quite possibly cancer.

We know autoimmune diseases target different areas of the body, but the genes that affect the immune response are the same.  In fact many autoimmune diseases have the same inflammatory molecules (cytokines) and immune cells that cause damage.  So autoimmune diseases and the genes involved can run in families but may react against different organs and joints. Therefore, if autoimmune diseases run in your family, your sister could be troubled by hypothyroidism and you may be troubled by arthritis … all caused by the same gene.  But we can’t just blame the genes, stress, anger, trauma, depression, repressed memories, loneliness, etc., can put such a strain on the immune system that it’s unable to protect the body from outside invaders.

METAPHYSICAL CAUSES OF ARTHRITIS

Arthritis; represents ‘oozing resentments’. You are so angry your joints become inflamed. Who or what is it that you resent so much? Louise Hay suggests this comes from feeling unloved.”
From: Compassionate Dragon Healing http://www.compassionatedragon.com/metaphysics5.html

I have not found the above statement to be totally true.  There are so many other factors involved, you just can’t narrow it down to resentments and anger. For example, the hands are known to become rigid and deformed from arthritis .. metaphysically it looks as if the fingers are being pulled back out of shape. In fact it’s the body pulling back – it’s trying to tell you to pull back or withdraw from something – if you resist, severely enough, the body will withdraw emotional energies from what you are doing or are involved in.  You will lose your grip.

Let’s look at what other healers, medical intuitives have to say…….

“Arthritis: The joints give us free and graceful movement, so arthritis is connected to our innermost feelings about the movement we are taking, what we are doing within that movement, or the direction we are going in. There may also be a sensation of the energy pulling back from moving forward, maybe out of fear of the movement, or because we would really rather be doing something or going somewhere different. This state also indicates self-criticism (stiffness), lack of self-worth, fear, anger (inflammation) and bitterness (pain). There can be a sense of being tied down, restricted, restrained and confined; also a developing inability to bend, to be mentally flexible or to be able to surrender. This can reflect a lack of self-trust as well as a hardening attitude towards life. These feelings are about ourselves, but rather than being acknowledged inwardly they are usually projected outwardly towards others. The part of the body being afflicted with arthritis indicates further information; see also entries on the specific joint and side of the body, Joints, and Rheumatoid Arthritis. ”  Deb Shapiro: Your Body Speaks Your Mind

Daniel Condron’s “Permanent Healing”… “Arthritis (see also joints):
Mental Attitude: Restrictions placed upon Self. Release the past and come to terms with anger.
Suggestions for Improvement: push beyond the limitations you have imagined for your Self. Know what you want and don’t take no for an answer.

Joints (see also Arthritis, Elbow, Knee):
Mental Attitude: Mental restriction
Suggestions for Improvement: Eliminate for six months from your life and vocabulary: “I can’t, I won’t, I shouldn’t, I couldn’t, and I haven’t.” Replace them with I can, I will, I want to, I am able.”

Caroline Myss: “The Creation of Health”………….Energy Analysis of Rheumatoid Arthritis: This illness is generated by a combination of chronic anger and resentment. Specifically, these emotions are generated because a person feels controlled by the emotional and/or psychological needs of someone with whom they are closely involved. Usually, the patient perceives the controlling source as a person who is emotionally very dependent, and, for that reason, the patient feels unable to challenge the imbalanced emotional dynamics of the relationship. In one sense, the patient often feels as though he or she is being held in emotional bondage with no alternative available for emotional release other than to internalize it. The patient perceives that his or her own movements are being restricted due to the demands of another person.”

Hmm, okay so with Caroline Myss, we’re back to anger and resentment with however, more of an explanation of how these emotions are generated.

RHEUMATOID ARTHRITIS (Added July 30, 2014)

“This is where the immune system starts attacking itself, attacking the collagen, which is the connective tissue in the joints, as if it were an invading antigen. It is known that this state worsens when we experience extra stress or tension. Rheumatoid arthritis indicates a deep self-dislike, perhaps due to shame or guilt; an inbred sense of worthlessness or self-criticism; as well as long-held anger, bitterness and stiff attitudes. We are attacking our own selves and the result is painful and limited mobility in moving or expressing ourselves freely.  The joints are our means for fluid and graceful expression, so swelling and soreness here indicate a real difficulty in expressing that fluidity of movement in what we are doing and the direction we are going in.  The rheumatoid arthritic personality is one that exhibits unassertive and inhibited behavior, is self-sacrificing, and unable to express strong emotions. That lack of expression then manifests physically as lack of mobility; it turns against itself and find expression in being inwardly critical and bitter. The BODYMIND Workbook ~ Debbie Shapiro

“The degree of seriousness is relative to the degree of emotional, mental and spiritual blockage. Generally, if you suffer from rheumatoid arthritis, you are very self-critical; you have difficulty doing what you enjoy and asking others for help. Although you seem amenable enough, you let resentment build up while you wait for others to figure out telepathically what you need. You may even have thoughts of vengeance when others don’t figure it out. Just as this disease is paralyzing physically, it also indicates emotional paralysis.

Pay attention to the location of your symptoms. If the inflammation is in your hands, for example, you need to examine your attitude while working with your hands. Do you need help with work you are doing? Then say so. ~ Your Body’s Telling You Love Yourself ~ Lise Bourbeau

Everyone loved Jonie, a sweet elderly woman afflicted by rheumatoid arthritis. Her hands were gnarled, her spine looked twisted and she lived in constant pain. Why did this dear woman who spent her life caring for others and an avid church goer, suffer so much.

Although most healers won’t say the ‘actual’ cause of rheumatoid arthritis, they have said these clients ‘appear’ placid and gentle when first meeting them. Yet as the healing or reading takes place, there always seems to be, below these people’s awareness, anger, which he or she ‘learned’ to repress early in life.

Jonie would never ever tell anyone a lie, but as a child, she learned to lie to herself about her true feelings. She grew up in a rigid religious atmosphere and learned that to express herself forcefully was sinful. So she grew never expressing herself and believed she had no hostility. Her knowledge of the spiritual world was extensive but her awareness of her emotions were almost nonexistent. She had learned to repress or deny her hostility,  but the inner conflict was always there gnarling at her soul, creating anxiety, which caused a metabolic imbalance and in time a crippling illness. (Rheumatoid arthritis may begin with swelling and morning stiffness..it takes a while for symptoms to accumulate)

Not only arthritis but many other physical disabilities occur from anxiety .. born out of our refusal to be honest with our emotions.  Simply being aware of our inner conflict won’t always achieve healing.  We first need to beware of the basic cause; second, we need to accept these emotions as valid and real at a feeling level and third, we need to ‘talk out’ our feelings in a proper setting. When we keep our emotions inside, Rheumatoid arthritis in later stages, can affect the chest and lung area, causing pain on taking deep breaths or feeling breathless…rheumatoid nodules have been seen on lung tissue itself, not just the lining.  If your joints are swollen and red, and you feel pain when the joints are moved, it’s important to get diagnosed and start treatment quickly.

BODY/MIND

It has also been proven that our emotional and psychological states can influence the onset of an illness and more and more practicioners are looking at the body/mind together instead of separate. The question is how do we discover the cause and find the cure?

CASE STUDY # ONE

Fiona was forty-five years old when she came to the clinic for healing. She suffered from arthritis in her neck, hands and hip area. When we met, I extended my arm and hand to greet hers, it was met with a weak and weary handshake.  I noticed Fiona’s wrist was very swollen and her hand cold to touch. At that moment a vision filled my awareness with painful images and emotional experiences. I wasn’t prepared for its onslaught and my body started to sweat, breathe heavily and react with a racing heartbeat and nauseous stomach. I wasn’t able to move, ….all this happened in seconds!

As I let go of Fiona’s hand, my body was trembling, weak and emotional. Thankfully I knew this reaction was from feeling and sensing Fiona’s energy. Silently thanking the information, I shook my hands, letting the emotions/feelings go. This is a must is you’re interested in healing or you’ll become too emotionally involved and won’t be able to help another.

Unconsciously, there was alot going on beneath the surface of Fiona’s guarded facade that inhibited and weakened her life force. When she spoke, her voice was timid, soft spoken and each sentence trailed into silence. Physically, there was extra padding around her hips, forming a hard protective shell around her sexual and creative area.

I saw a similar pattern to her energy and the energy of the couple in a former article in this blog called Spiritual Addiction = Self Destruction. Fiona had silenced the voice of her own body….she had closed the door to her own sensuality and closed down her own passion. Why?

From the many quick images I had seen earlier through touching her hand, I wondered if Fiona’s husband had been unfaithful to her? Was Fiona feeling deeply betrayed, hurt, angry? I didn’t present this until Fiona was comfortable and had let down her guard a little. When I did speak of the visual I saw earlier, Fiona sighed and fell silent for a moment, her face marked with sadness. She told me it was true, her husband had been unfaithful, making her feel old, fat, small and ugly. It had been a very dark time for her in which she felt life had very little meaning and joy. Although the affair was short-lived, Fiona feared losing her husband. She was too afraid to try facing life alone. So, instead, she gave in to his every whim, suppressing her own emotions and feelings.

“I don’t know why I’m doing this” said Fiona a short-time later, “I knew I’d never trust him again”.

When I scanned her body, another image I’d seen came forward, it was like a nightmare, very unsettling. It was an image of her in a bathtub. Her face was above water but her body was immersed in what looked like an eroding acid bath, bubbling and eating away at her body. Her facial area was untouched, her body a tangled mess of skin and bone. I kept this image to myself until I understood it and found a way to express it. It symbolically meant something but I wasn’t sure what at the time?!?!?

It wasn’t until I actually started the Reiki treatment that the realization of the above image spoke to me. I’m not sure if it was Fiona’s inner self, my intuition, my guides or inner wisdom who led me to it, but it was a Eureka!! a sudden realization that soared through my body and mind. Fiona was supposed to be going through a major transformation and she was doing everything in her power to stop it!

(When we are not in touch with our ‘need’ to change, others, close members (family, husbands, friends) will unconsciously ‘force’ this change by acting as ‘agents of disruption“!)  Oh my gawd, that was it! I kept this to myself for the time being…..until I felt Fiona was ready to believe and accept it.

From my Reiki III manual…..

“The symptoms of dis-ease is also the symbol of spiritual separation and this is directly linked to resisting change in one’s life, emotions and/or thinking. When we refuse to change, the immune system of the body breaks down, the lymphatic system becomes blocked and conjested causing swelling as well as joint aches and mind confusion. But, to detox the body faster than it can acknowledge what’s actually going on, could overtax and cause the whole bodily system to shut down.”

The first Reiki treatment for Fiona, was the basic hands-on-healing, without the use of the emotional symbol Sei Hei Ki. This would be applied later, once Fiona was willing to go through her pain, not avoid it!

SUMMARY OF FIRST TREATMENT

When we don’t do what makes us happy, we eventually become angry and resentful.  This sentence certainly fits with the three different metaphysical causes of arthritis.  Fiona wasn’t displaying anger but it was definitely gurgling and bubbling deep inside.  Instead she repressed her anger and frustration and poured out all her energy to being a submissive, obedient wife.  Usually sexual betrayal creates volatile angry feelings.  There certainly was a high voltage of energy wanting to come out but instead it was sizzling inside her.  It created an acidic bath that was having a corrosive effect on her body.

Fiona was full of theories and excuses why she couldn’t do what she wanted to do…….Fiona was a ‘victim of love’.   Victims of love deny themselves the very things they know would make them happy.  They put others needs before their own and this was what Fiona was doing.  And it always left her feeling drained and lethargic with empty hands and heart.  It seemed her arthritis had come about from resisting, holding, tightening and compressing.  This was an analysis of our first visit and I recorded my thoughts and feelings along with the findings.

The next visit, if Fiona chose to come back, would begin loosening and releasing the past so Fiona could reclaim her life-force.  It wouldn’t be easy.  First the anger of rage grief and jealousy had to come out.  Then a long process of carefully listening inside for guidance and groping forward in the dark, one step at a time.  If I had told her this on her first session, I probably would have never seen her again.

Not only was Fiona  in deep physical pain, she also suffered from migraines and her body was starting to go into premature menopause.   There was alot of work to be done and Reiki alone wouldn’t do it.

THE SECOND AND SUBSEQUENT VISITS  to be continued in part two

Your body will do everything it can to LIVE! It has a knowing when things aren’t right and immediately starts to repair injured or problem areas. This section helps you to understand how the body’s healing system works.

Your healing system (the intelligence within) continually works twenty-four hours a day for you. A tough job! You hardly recognize it’s around unless you get a scratch or a sprain or a cut and the bodies internal intelligence repairs and replenishes without you giving it a single thought. Your talented team has done its job.

When the flu season is rampant or you’re exposed to something and don’t get it, you think you’re really lucky. What you don’t realize is how hard your team has worked to keep you well. In fact, your body deals with all kinds of threats before they become serious, even cancer, whenever they show up to threaten your health.

Our bodies are more than just physical, they are a miniature universe of energies helping us to empower ourselves by monitoring all the energies we filter into our bodies from food, air and drink to the energies around us, people, our environment, attitudes, sounds, etc. Under normal conditions the body’s natural defenses can throw off any negative influence before it develops symptoms of dis-ease.

The body’s defense system works as a team twenty four hours a day, constantly seeking out living viruses; bacteria; parasites; yeasts; toxins like nicotine, alcohol, caffeine, drugs, automobile exhaust; chemicals; even things that are good for you like herbs, vitamins and minerals, antioxidants, amino acids; or something you’re allergic to like milk/dairy products, chocolate, wheat, corn, ragweed, dusts, pollens and molds that’s considered “not you” to destroy. That’s its job. It’s only when it becomes overwhelmed for whatever reason, that you finally get sick or diseased.

THE SKIN

On the body’s surface, the skin is our largest sense organ, symbolizing our sensitivity and our self-worth. Metaphysically it is called ‘the body of the soul’. It’s also known to symbolize birth and rebirth as its cells are constantly regenerating.

Did you know your skin contains sweat glands and sebaceous glands which both produce substances capable of killing bacteria and fungus on contact? Every stimuli your body receives, whether inside or outside, its response to this stimuli is perfect. If you’re cold, the blood-flow to the skin is restricted to hold in body heat…..the response from your body…..you shiver. When too warm, the body revs up the thermostat, sending blood to the skin area for cooling and pumps moisture through the skin which then evaporates…..this is how we perspire. So the skin defends against infection and dehydration, controls body temperature and also represents how you interact with the world……what you want to bring forward.

The skin is actually one of the richest sources of all the hormones found in the body. When stimulated the skin showers us with a flow of healing chemicals into our blood stream. One of the most important of these is known as growth hormones (HGH). HGH is a hormone secreted by the pituitary gland and is necessary for hair growth and maintaining normal elasticity of the skin.

The skin is also the seat of our emotions. When we are deeply moved we say we have been deeply touched. The experience of touch or sensation is linked to a past thought which then creates an emotion. The skin is symbolic to our feelings.

THE NOSE

The nose helps to cleanse and warm the air we breathe to help the lungs take in fresh oxygen and breathe out carbon dioxide. As you breath, irritants are trapped in nasal hairs and mucus. Mucus kills both bacteria and viruses. This definitely helps to give us a little more respect for that stuff calledg phlegm. Mucus is carried upward on cilia (tiny hairlike projections lining your respiratory tract), and outward through coughing and sneezing.

THE MOUTH

Saliva in our mouths and tears in our eyes contain enzymes destructive to invaders.

FEVER

Fever is also important part of your healing team. It helps to destroy bacteria and toxins in the body that threaten our survival. The body will do anything to live!
Conversion of matter to spirit is when we need to raise energy or apply heat which allows our subtle bodies (aura) to extend away from the body to pull in more healing energy. We spoke of shivers earlier, but shivers are also a way of drawing the subtle body back into alignment with the physical.

DNA LEVEL

The size and complexity of your healing team is mind boggling. You’ll find members of the team working deep down at the most basic level of your body in every cell’s DNA. The DNA’s job is to replicate, transcribe, and translate information from one cell to another and from one generation of cell to the next. It also relays information to other cells through the RNA.

Enzymes are the “hands” that carry out the DNA instructions within the cell. They’re also catalysts to speed the process and sometimes make sure it’s done right. Each DNA contains all the information needed to manufacture enzymes to repair itself.

When a DNA recognizes it’s damaged, it quickly sets in motion enzymes to remove the damage and replace it with normal structure. It also takes care of the ordinary, moment-to-moment corrections (such as proofreading and editing to assure error-free translations). The healing process at this level is spontaneous and automatic.

Suppose you’re out in the sun and one of your skin cell’s DNA is injured from an UV ray. Almost immediately the damaged area of the affected strand is snipped on both sides (by endonuclease and exonuclease) and cut out in an elaborate molecular version of cut and paste. The gap is then filled with undamaged nucleotidase and voila new skin. All works well as long as they’re not overwhelmed – an example of being overwhelmed would be if two strands were damaged in the same DNA which would cause a mutation that could become cancer of the skin. (This threat is a strong argument for using sun blocking lotion.)

This is also the level where oxygen free radicals raise havoc similar to the way UV rays do to the skin. Again, we can handle the situation unless we become overwhelmed. Today with all the environmental toxins, antioxidants like vitamin C, grape-seed extract, green tea, vitamin E, etc. can be very helpful to us in combating oxygen free radicals and maintaining balance within our bodies.

CELLULAR LEVEL

We also find some team members at the cellular level. Much of their work takes place at the plasma membrane surrounding each cell. This is a dynamic membrane constantly taking in wanted, and throwing out unwanted materials (including itself as it’s constantly regenerating). For example, LDL receptor team members bind to LDL cholesterol in the bloodstream. This is the “bad” cholesterol that tends to deposit on arterial walls. When bound, this “bad” cholesterol is sucked through the membrane into certain cells where it is removed from circulation.
These cells metabolize some of the cholesterol and dispose of the excess by chopping it up into small pieces and expelling them.

The neat thing is these LDL receptors continue to recycle every ten to twenty minutes during their ten to thirty hour lifespan. They’re then replaced by newly formed receptors. As in the DNA, this is a spontaneous healing system that sucks in materials through cellular membranes, recognizing (diagnosing) and removing and replacing (treating) defective structure and function. It automatically and continuously performs this moment-to-moment maintenance within your body. Again all goes well unless they’re overwhelmed – examples of being overwhelmed are high cholesterol levels, clogged arteries and atherosclerosis.

IMMUNE SYSTEM LEVEL – IN YOUR BLOOD

Cells form tissue, tissues form organs, and organs form bodily systems. When it’s working at a resting rate, your heart beats more than 100,000 times a day to move the equivalent of 2,100 gallons of blood through the nearly 60,000 miles of blood vessels throughout these tissues, organs, and systems. Think of this, one drop of blood circulates through your body and returns to the heart in just 24 seconds.

Blood, our life fluid, is a combination of similar cells and liquid. It represents vitality and joy of life. The collection of similar cells each serve a particular function – red to carry oxygen, white to fight infection, and platelets to stop bleeding. These cells are suspended in plasma, a liquid. It symbolizes and contains the life essence and pattern of our lives, past, present and future. It was often a part of ancient mystical rites.

The immune system (what we generally call healing team members at this level) consists primarily of some one trillion white cells. A cubic millimeter of blood contains 5 million red blood cells and 7,000 white blood cells. The source of white cells is your bone marrow. Where these white cells mature decides what their specific role will be in the healing system. “Eater” cells mature in the liver and spleen. B-cells mature in the spleen while T-cells mature in the thymus gland.

The whole thing is something to behold. You’re more aware of this level of the healing system than the previous two because pain is often associated with it, fever (which stimulates the production of white blood cells) may accompany it and some illness (like a cold or the flu) may follow it.

The more colorful Macrophages (“big eaters”) and Phagocytes (“bigger eaters”) move back and forth through the bloodstream. The macrophages use PAC-man-like maneuvers and the phagocytes use “glob”-type action to gobble up “not you” foreigners they find like bacteria, yeast, etc. T-cells attach themselves to phagocytes where they categorize intruders and direct the the glob action to absorb or ignore them. The eaters also gobble up debris left over from repairs made in healing injuries. Some of the bad guys get by these eaters. For example, the pneumonia bacteria and viral invasions are unaffected.

Determining what’s “you” and what’s not involves a complex identification system. Every substance – from a dust mite to the flu virus to one of your own cells – carries its own “chemical ID card,” marked by a unique molecular pattern on its surface. All your body’s cells have the same molecular pattern.

Helper T-cells are the captains of the immune team. They’re triggered by the activity of the “eaters.” Macrophages engulf invaders then break them down and display fragments of antigen as markers on their surfaces. T-cells find the markers and release proteins that bind to the infected cells such as a virus or bacteria. They then rush this information to the spleen and lymph nodes for help.

B-cells produce antibodies in these organs. Each antibody made by a B-cell fits a particular antigen as a key fits a lock. We never know which of the potential millions of disease-causing antigen we’ll encounter next. We can mix and match DNA in “mini-gene” segments, similar to bulding with different colored snap-and-lock blocks.

These mini-genes combine and recombine into the optimum pattern to make
antibodies that will fit any of these antigens we might encounter. Helper T-cells stimulate B-cells to produce more of a particular antibody which are then targeted at specific invaders and are rushed to neutralize them or tag them in some way for attack by other cells.

Special killer T-cells will kill body cells (such as mucous cells of the lungs or throat or body cells that have turned cancerous) that have been invaded by outside organisms. Antibodies then neutralize the viruses and clump around the viral surfaces to prevent them from attacking other cells.

Invaders can cause a lot of trouble, especially if your defenses are down because of stress overload (working more and sleeping less), poor nutrition (too much fat and not enough balanced vitamins and minerals), faulty lifestyles (weigh too much, exercise too little, smoke and/or drink too much, etc.). When your defenses are down, the viruses enter cells and unite with the DNA and begin to replicate and multiply. Once they have a foothold, they then steal nourishment at the cellular level to feed the miniature virus factory they’ve started.

Your immune system can handle the situation as long as it’s not overwhelmed even when your defenses are down. If your defenses are strong and balanced (your job is help keep it that way), the invaders are taken care of without any extra fuss.

Once the immune team has things under control the body goes into the
convalescent and recovery phases. At this time, Suppressor T-cells slow down or stop the activity of B-cells and other T-cells. (In Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome or AIDS, the HIV virus invades and destroys helper T-cells but does not attack the suppressor cells. As a result, there is an excess of suppressor cells which essentially shuts down the immune system.)

Notice the purpose of the suppressor T-cells is to maintain a balance within your body. Note that when your body gets out of balance at any of the levels, your healing system is activated to bring it back into balance.

Finally, Memory cells “make notes,” called cellular memory – this allows the immune system to quickly respond and destroy these viruses the next time they show up to try to make trouble. It’s these memory cells that are programmed when we are vaccinated for something like small pox or the flu. There is a lot of controversy about this method of preventing disease that needs our immediate attention especially vaccines for infants and children. We need to become more aware of the serious affects these can cause. But Medical science is also concentrating on new vaccines to help prevent and combat such serious ailments as cancer and HIV.

LYMPHATIC SYSTEM

Another member of your team is the lymphatic system. It also carries the fellow immune team members right down to the cell level. The lymphatic system consists of millions of tiny vessels or ducts throughout the body. The spleen is the largest collection of lymph tissue in the body. The lymph fluid flows toward the chest back into the blood through the liver and kidneys. Lymph nodes act as filters for the removal of infective organisms. The lymphatic system has no pumps. Circulation through it depends on breathing and muscle movement (another good reason for exercise).

ENZYMATIC PROTEINS

There is also a complex series of 12 enzymatic proteins that circulate in the blood. They assist eater cells by making lethal holes in bacterial cells. These proteins enhance the inflammatory response. They work with immune team members in the healing process. Medical science is not sure how these enzymes are activated. Observations suggest one of the activators is negative electromagnetic energy.

YOUR INTESTINES

Another important team member is found within your gut. The small intestine works to digest and absorb nutrients, and the large intestines aborb water and eliminate the residue. They symbolize how well we absorb and eliminate experiences in our lives. Over 400 different species of both healthful and harmful microorganisms make their home in a healthy intestine. They can weigh up to 3 pounds – having so many important functions in our bodies that they can be thought of as an exogenous organ. Their numbers can be as high as 100 trillion — out numbering the cells of the body by 100 to one. By weight, there are actually more bad guys than the good ones. As long as the HEALTHY BALANCE is maintained all goes well.

Probiotics (lots of good hype about this lately), the good guys, are similar bacterial cultures that make milk into yogurt and cabbage into sauerkraut. They help keep everything in balance, keeping the bad guys in line; assisting the digestive process; stimulating the immune system; and helping to alleviate gastric disorders, to eliminate bad breath, prevent yeast infections, lower blood cholesterol, produce B vitamins and vitamin K.

Stress, the unchecked consumption of refined or processed foods, excessive alcohol, birth control pills, some food additives, some cortisone-type drugs, radiation therapy, fluoridated and/or chlorinated water, exposure to toxic metals, pollutants, or radiation, and, OF COURSE, ANTIBIOTIC THERAPY can all push the BALANCE in favor of the harmful bacteria.

A healthy gut = balance. Sometimes we might need to supplement the good guys by adding probiotics to our diet. The best thing we can do is make sure the good guys are well fed.

Note that in the animal world carnivorous animals (meat eaters) have a relatively short digestive system (about three times the length of the body). This is because the flesh they eat decays very quickly and the by-products produced by the decay could poison the bloodstream if the flesh remains in the body too long. The other animals have much longer digestive systems (about ten times the length of their bodies). The human digestive system is more in the latter category. This is another good reason for us to eat meat sparingly.

WHEN THE IMMUNE SYSTEM DOESN’T WORK RIGHT

It seems white blood cells go through a learning process in developing this ability to identify the good and bad guys. Some don’t pass the test and are inactivated or they attack your own cells. This is called an autoimmune disease (such as rheumatoid arthritis or insulin- dependent diabetes). Others overreact to common substances such a pollen or dust (causing allergies or asthma). No one knows what causes the immune system’s recognition process to break down this way. Scientists believe multiple factors – heredity, viruses, certain drugs or even sunlight may play roles.

Most of the time everything works right. However, sometimes our team gets out of balance and can’t get back. No one is sure why this happens but the resulting problems are apparent. Allergies and asthma can result when excess histamines are produced when T-cells overreact to some common foods or particles such as dust and pollen.

Even more seriously; your immune team can, for no known reason, attack normal cells as we would an invading bacteria or virus. When insulin-producing cells are the target, Type 1 diabetes results. Targeting membrane lining of the joints may result in rheumatoid arthritis. When the team takes on the myelin sheaths that surround the nerves in the brain, the result may be MS.

Sometimes we need to be nudged into activity. That’s what memory cells do when we are vaccinated. The cancer vaccines being developed are geared to go a step further and mobilize your team to not only prevent cancer but to actually attack existing tumors.

REGENERATION

Regeneration is also part of the healing process. It’s common knowledge that animals like salamanders readily regenerate their limbs. It is amazing that we too possess the ability to mend broken bones It has been proven that negative electromagnetic energy is the prime healing force. The human body is a magnificent healing machine – we are learning and discovering how to turn on the right switches to activate the process.

Other regeneration is also active in our bodies. We’re constantly shedding and regenerating new skin. The entire lining of the intestinal tract sloughs off and is renewed every day! Our livers can regenerate up to eighty percent in a matter of hours as long as the tissue that remains is normal. We also know that some things like neurons in our brains and our heart muscles do not regenerate.

ELECTROMAGNETIC ENERGY AND ALTERNATIVE THERAPY

From observations in enzyme activation and bone healing, we see that
electromagnetic energy (the Life Force)is an important player in the healing process. It turns out that diseased, infected, and injured tissue are all positively charged. This is when Reiki and other healing modalities comes to play.

The electromagnetic positive signal is sent to the brain through the nervous system and the brain in turn returns electromagnetic negative energy (which is female by the way) to the area. This proves that all healing comes from within. The body has a tremendous ability in restoring itself to health. Viruses and bacteria surround us all the time, so we need to ponder why we get sick.

IN CONCLUSION

What a marvelous thing this healing system is! Scientists tell us our bodies are made to last at least 120 years. Your job is to do everything you can in your lifestyle to keep everything running smoothly and properly. There’s still a great deal to be learned about how our bodies work and how they heal themselves. We sure know the power of our mind-body relationships is an important part of this discovery process. Healing includes locating and removing energy blocks and this can be accomplished by raising our consciousness and understanding of the metaphysical nature of the human body and its energy system. For true health to occur we need to learn how to integrate the physical, emotional, mental and spirit into our beings. All healing comes from within. It can be initiated from an outside source, which serves to set the healing process in action. We are learning to “know” our bodies and their response to outside stimuli.

Illness is just a symptom. It’s your body’s way of getting your attention that something has gotten out of balance.
