The gut is one of the primary filtration systems of the body, when its plumbing, electrical and drainage system aren’t working quite right, the body starts absorbing toxins, clogging the system. When the gut can no longer protect us, autoimmune problems can be triggered by a network of cellular communications and through our lymph nodes. Constipation, diarrhea, bloating, poor motility, and trapped gas can all lead to obesity, high cholesterol, diverticulitis, pancreatic problems and more. Toxic buildups are stored in the fat cells of the body…if these toxins leak into the fluids of the body, which includes the blood, they can cause fatigue, body aches, thyroid, heart and brain problems, as well as depression.

Most back pains are 10 times more painful than any other muscle strain in the body.  The reason for this… the back muscles are designed to ‘protect’ and ‘defend’ the spinal column.  Also, the back muscles are closely connected to the Central Nervous System (CNS) that transmits pain messages to your brain—muscle pain is an early warning that your spine might be in trouble.  When we are tense, our back muscles can go into spasm, causing excruciating pain that can last for weeks, months, even years.

The spine is generally flexible and quite resilient and when properly aligned is able to learn from and integrate a variety of life experiences.  These experiences either stressful or ecstatic are able to flow easily through the awareness of the body/mind as long as there is no disruption, which could knock the vertebrae(s) off course. But when we experience a stressful or traumatic/shocking event, the spine’s shock-absorber’s become inflexible from the shock, causing the muscles, ligaments and tendons of your back and abdomen to work harder to keep you upright.

The backside of the body reflects private and unconscious elements of your life. The back becomes the storehouse for everything you don’t want to deal with or don’t want other people to see. Hidden or unexpressed feelings become frozen in the structure of your body. That means a lot of negative emotions becomes stored along your spine and in the backs of your legs. Most of your powerful emotions such as anger and fear are stored in your back and it is these emotions that pull your body out of balance.

Trying to distance and suppress your feelings only aggravates the problem..as you are still continuing to carry the past, which continues to grow heavier and heavier.If you’ve been protecting yourself all these years and defending yourself from real or imagined dangers, you are living in a constant state of alertness.  As well, you learnt to take protective steps to feel safe….this has been known to create an unsteadiness from the lower back, hips, and right down to the feet. The pelvis represents our inner direction and our deepest feelings and thoughts…it’s about our personal movement. Our 1st (root) chakra basically connects us to the earth as well as our survival instincts. Excessive tightness in the hips and buttocks may reflect a person’s need to ‘hold on’ in order to survive.

Just for a moment, right now, check your muscles in your backside. Are they relaxed? Or are they clenched tight? If so, consciously relax them and notice the difference in your attitude.

THE SECOND (SACRAL) Chakra

“Sensations and feelings contribute to emotions, another aspect of the second chakra. Emotion – from the Latin e, meaning out, and movere, to move – is the moving of prana through the tissues of the body. Emotions are the result of feelings stored up in the body. For example, you may have a feeling of irritation at something, but if that feeling is repeatedly stored in your tissues, it can become the emotion of anger. I like to think of sensations as the words, feelings as the sentences, and emotions as the story that emerges.

When you repress emotion, you restrict the body’s natural movements. You become rigid, creating the opposite of the second chakra’s watery flow, inhibiting flexibility. The lower back is associated with the 2nd chakra which is associated with the hips, sacrum, lower back, genitals, womb, bladder and kidneys. This chakra is about sensuality, sexuality, emotions, intimacy, and desire. All watery things have to do with this chakra: circulation, urination, menstruation, orgasm, tears. Water flows, moves and changes and a healthy second chakra allows us to do so.  It is also this chakra where, as a child, we were supported and reassured  from our parents.

Your aggressive nature might have caused you some anxious moments while you were growing up, when you had to confine yourself to the limits imposed by your parents. They may have considered you too big for your britches then, or simply reckless and immature. Your need to demonstrate your independence might have alienated you from them. Your subsequent development made you realize that you had to act when you felt that it was appropriate, knowing that ‘he who hesitates is lost’. Even now, you aren’t easily dissuaded by people who say that your plans won’t work, and you always manage to prove them wrong.

If we didn’t get the support we needed as a child.. it can affect the areas of the lower back and knees. See the kidney meridian runs along at the back of the knee as does the bladder, liver and spleen.  Inflammation is caused by a buildup of fluid.. the area of the skin very sensitive to be touched.  When a large amount of the 2nd chakra energy is released through exercising, it can make us sensitive to energies in the environment and from other people too.  It can also make us feel young, happy and bright!

When the 2nd chakra is balanced and healthy, we can be emotionally fluid, allowing ourselves to feel freely and without guilt. When it is excessive, we are overly emotional, have poor boundaries between ourselves and others, and are prone to obsessive attachments. When the 2nd chakra is deficient we tend toward emotional numbness, rigidity, and fear of pleasure.

PSOAS MUSCLES (major contributors to low back pain)

Buried deep within the core of your body, the psoas (pronounced “so-as”) affects every facet of your life, from your physical well-being to who you feel yourself to be and how you relate to the world. Acting as a bridge between the lower trunk and legs, the psoas is critical for keeping the spine aligned, allowing the joints to freely rotate and giving the muscles a full range of motion. The abdominal muscle, are surrounded by a complex network of nerve ganglia which lies approximately at the level of the psoas and the diaphragm. If the psoas is constricted for whatever reason, it will press on the nerves in the abdominal area. Constriction of the diaphragm may shorten the psoas, and tightness in the psoas may restrict the ability of the diaphragm to move freely. Any constriction in the the diaphragm will prevent full body breathing, a process which massages the internal organs and promotes strength and vitality.

Whether you suffer from a sore back or anxiety, from knee strain or exhaustion, there’s a good chance that a constricted psoas muscle might be contributing to your problem. When the psoas muscles go into spasm, they pull down on the shoulder and create an actual physical imbalance… you actually may feel yourself leaning over more to one-side.  Metaphysically the psoas muscles can indicate complex traumas and unresolved ‘unconscious’ issues from early childhood.  People with chronically tight psoas muscles have cut off their deeper feelings altogether, exerting rigid control over themselves as a way of defending themselves against these raw emotions. And yet there is always the sense of some imminent danger.  For some people, their whole life is built around suppressing what’s down there, and in this respect they are dominated by those very things they are trying to keep at bay. Finding the self is like Peeling an onion – layer upon layer has to be removed to reach the core. This is similar to the deep-sea diver who plunges into the depths of the personal unconscious bringing hidden complexes to light so that they can be examined worked on and hopefully transmuted.

Since the home sphere is where most people feel the most vulnerable, they may attempt to manipulate and, control those around them so that nobody slips up and detonates their inner time-bomb. Obviously, this does not lend itself to the most relaxed of home atmospheres, in which there are probably many unwritten rules about what is or isn’t allowed to be said or done.

“The kidneys are actually situated behind the psoas, while the intestines and reproductive organs lie in front of it. When the psoas is tight and constricted, the lumbar curve becomes exaggerated, causing the abdominal organs to fall forward against the abdominal muscles, which were not designed to carry this weight. …When displaced, the intestines are unable to absorb nutrients, eliminate waste, and the sexual reproductive functions could be impaired. The problem as well, is that no matter how many sit-ups you do they won’t be able to support the constricted psoas pushing the abdominal cavity forward.” Yoga Journal ~ By Donna Farhi

Healing the psoas can help to improve your overall structure,  and bring to light, old traumas and fears (physical tension) locked in the body.  In regard to the fight or flight response, the psoas have been known to curl you into a fetal ball to protect the front of the body, or prepare your back and leg muscles to spring into action. Because the psoas is so intimately involved in physical and emotional reactions, a chronically tightened psoas continually signals the body that you’re in danger, eventually exhausting the adrenal glands and depleting the immune system.

One on each side of the spine, each working independently yet harmoniously, the psoas attaches to the side and toward the front of the 12th thoracic vertebra and each lumbar vertebrae. Moving though the pelvis without attaching to the bone, the psoas inserts along with the iliacus muscle in a common tendon at the top of the femur.

The psoas’ main function is to act as a hip flexor….without it walking or running would be impossible. These muscles also contribution to the outer rotation of the hips. When the psoas is so tight, they can’t release, causing the legs to turn outward during intense back-bending, which can pinch the muscles and nerves of the lower back.

The major aorta that carries the blood from the heart run very close to the psoas muscles and it has been thought that an imbalance in the psoas may affect blood circulation throughout the upper and lower extremities. Many people feel a flush of heat down the legs and up into the chest when the psoas releases. So the deep muscles of the psoas can affect circulation, respiration, nerve impulses as well as organ function. And we still haven’t considered the effect the psoas have on the musculoskeletal system.

In addition the psoas also forms a supportive shelf for the vital organs wjithin the abdominal core. In walking, a healthy psoas moves freely and joins with a released diaphragm to continuously massage the spine as well as the organs, blood vessels, and nerves of the trunk. Working as a hydraulic pump, a freely moving psoas stimulates the flow of fluids throughout the body. And a released, flowing psoas combined with a stable weight-bearing pelvis, contributes to the sensations of feeling grounded and centered.

 

CENTRAL NERVOUS SYSTEM (CNS)

Have you ever wondered with the body’s amazing ability to renew itself, why we have, or seem to have the same or similar back problems throughout most of our lives?  The answer lies in the central nervous system (CNS). The CNS coordinates our consciousness with billions of neurons (individual nerve cells) that are sent to the brain to be interpreted.  Messages are then sent back to move the countless muscle fibers through the body.  This is why most of our back pain begins with problems in the muscles because they are directly connected to the nerves that transmit pain messages to your brain AND many back problems are made worse by stress or tension in the mind.

The CNS consists of the brain and spinal cord. The brain carries out most of the ‘computing’ in the nervous system and communicates with the rest of the body through the large bundle of nerves called the spinal cord. The peripheral nervous system (PNS) is the intricate network of nerves that carries information between the CNS and the rest of the body.  Thirty-one pairs of spinal nerves carry sensory and motor messages to and from the spinal cord. Together these nerves keep your entire body in communication with the brain.

“The nervous system maintains our body’s inner environment and regulates the digestion of food and the amount of carbon dioxide in our blood without our awareness…..

By acting as a conduit for the expression of Universal Consciousness (our innate wisdom), the nervous system establishes who we are and how we deal with the world. If the nervous system is stuck in one perspective, the messages it will send and receive will be stuck in that perspective as well. In other words, when the nervous system has not been able to recover from the trauma of past events—whether physical, emotional, or chemical—our emotional reality is also stuck…..The combined effect of various stress and the inability of the nervous system to deal with them produces a subluxation (interference) of the spine….This interference disrupts the nervous system’s natural ability to assemble and sort out neurological instructions.  Like a computer, if the input (messages to the system) is distorted in anyway, then the output (messages from the nervous system to each body cell) will also be distorted. There is a deep and powerful connection between the mind and back—to begin understanding the cause of your back pain, begin the healing process.   The more rigid, tight and unyielding the mind, the more rigid, tight and unyielding the physical body (tight shoulders, neck, chest, abdomen, hips hamstrings, psoas, ankles, etc… ).

A client of mine (J.S) has a friend who is a trauma counsellor which was originally designed for post traumatic stress disorder (PTSD)… specifically for soldiers who had returned from war. “It takes you through a series of movements.. then you end up in a position that releases the psoas, which is described as being a muscle that holds emotion (hence trauma release exercises to target it).”

Diabetes is a metabolic disorder in which a person cannot metabolize sugar in the blood.  As the levels of blood sugar, known as glucose rise, especially over a prolonged period of years, the sugar becomes toxic to a number of systems in the body, including the cardiovascular system.

 The cells of our body need glucose to produce energy……AND….the brains only food is glucose.  Glucose needs to be at a certain level for the brain to function normally.  After we eat, sugar levels normally rise in the body triggering a release of a hormone called insulin from cells in the pancreas called beta-cells.  Insulin ‘knows’ how to opens the doors of all our cells in the body, allowing glucose to enter them.  As glucose enters the cells, sugar levels drop off until we eat again.

 TYPES OF DIABETES

 TYPE I DIABETES

In diabetes, the immune system attacks and destroys the insulin-producing beta cells in the pancreas. The pancreas then produces little or no insulin. A person who has type 1 diabetes must take insulin daily to live……

TYPE II DIABETES

 The most common form of diabetes is type 2 diabetes. About 90 to 95 percent of people with diabetes have type 2. This form of diabetes is most often associated with older age, obesity, family history of diabetes, previous history of gestational diabetes, physical inactivity, and certain ethnicities. About 80 percent of people with type 2 diabetes are overweight.”

My brother passed away from a Diabetic Coma at the young age of 34.  Like so many who have lost loved ones at an early age, I started searching to understand the energetics of this disease.   Two years after Len’s death, I found myself catapulted into Alternative Healing.  Every person encountered taught me more about the forces and causes behind an illness and how each illness acts upon and affects one’s physical well-being.  Each healing  shared, helped me to recognize what needed to change about myself.

RESPONSIBILITY FOR OURSELVES

I understand what Caroline Myss is saying, for it is absolutely essential to understand a disease.  Type II diabetes can place major obstacles in your efforts to stay healthy, but this disease can magnify other risk factors, especially  your cardiovascular system and nerves.  Damaged nerves stops us from feeling the sensations of heat, cold, touch and pain.  You may not be aware of the pain that results from the heart not getting sufficient oxygen.  Without this warning singal, you may not be conscious of angina or even heart attack.  Also when sugar levels stay high in the blood, damage can occur in the tiniest blood vessels transporting oxygen to the tissues.  These tiny arteries or arterioles become scared or clogged with cholesterol-containing plague.

Only YOU can manage your disease,  Of course your doctor will prescribe insulins or oral medications but ultimately it is YOU who must be the one in control on a day-to-day basis.

There is extensive material on the internet and in books about diabetes.  Take the time to really learn all that you can about your condition.

The good news is, diabetes can be well controlled.  In both type I and type II, diet and exercise play major roles and are essential as part of your treatment.   Stack the odds in your favor by doing all you possibly can to work with you doctor and bring your diabetes under control.

The most important element to self healing is the ability to be present with your self.  You cannot begin if you are preoccupied with the past or living in the expectations of future times.  All these do is scatter your ability to focus and  leave you powerless.

Being in the present  will begin the process of releasing powerful emotions that have been masked or blocked.  It means courageously looking back and inward on a pain originally based on a fear…..an often painful process  we all try desperately to avoid.  AND  when we avoid pain, we experience frustration, anger and exhaustion…..our bodies only get sicker.

Taking care of yourself requires discipline and focus……it takes alot of courage to nourish and respectfully pay attention to YOU.

It is your right and responsiblity, as well as your joy to love and be loved.

“The sugar level in our blood obviously relates to the amount of sweetness and love in our lives and to the opposite, anger and sourness. Diabetes can indicate that the love we are receiving is uncontrollable and excessive, to the point where it is smothering or overwhelming. It is also unusable as it is constantly being eliminated in the urine, thus responding to a sense of loss and inner sadness. In this state there is a great desire for affection and love, yet an inability to know how to act if it is received. This give rise to anger and resentment, a blaming of others for our own inner fear and confusion in dealing with love. The word spleen also means moroseness and irritability.  “DIABETES: Mental Attitude: Refusing to give. Takes the form of deliberately withholding Self from others. Fear of never being able to have enough. Thinking Self does not have enough to give, therefore being stingy with how one gives.

Suggestions for Improvement: Be courageous. You can’t hide your Self forever, and fear is a limitation. Bring the real you out where others can see you. You may find you are a pretty valuable person. Practice giving something away every day to a stranger. It must be a stranger so you will not expect something from them in return. Choose to give to someone you will not see again. This is a place to begin.

Mental Attitude: Desire to give and holding back on this. Fear of losing from giving. Attitude of Self righteousness which is selfishness. Conditionally giving and receiving. Jealousy.

EMOTIONAL IMBALANCE AND HEALING

There are many different reasons why illness and disease develop in the human body. And although we have come to know that all illness has its roots in spirit, we cannot simply decide that all people with diabetes suffer psychologically from it the same way.  There are so many extenuating circumstances and conditions that a soul may have experienced, that each illness should be looked at as unique in terms to it’s meaning for each person. Many have written on the meaning of different illnesses, however, it has to feel right to in order for the information to empower you in taking charge of your life.

Dis-ease, and the circumstances of your life cannot be simply explained away by just telling yourself you’ll love and honor yourself more. The crux of the problem is discovering what prevents you from loving yourself first that needs to be explored.  Once uncovered then you can take your old beliefs and replace them with beliefs that support who you are.

Reality is created according to our beliefs and feelings about ourselves, the Universe and the Divine. So if a soul identifies with the need to suffer in order to learn, it will see that belief reflected in the reality he/she is in.  In fact all of life is truly an attempt at healing.  We learn more about ourselves and our life on Earth from falling off balance, then finding our way back to balance again.  There is no value to pain and suffering unless it leads to some kind of learning.

DE-MISTIFYING THE PANCREAS 

Imagine if you could actually plug yourself into a main computer; you’d be able to listen in and discover how the interplay of emotions and feelings affect every cell and organ of your body.  Today we’re going to zoom into the pancreas and discover what could cause low blood sugar or diabetes.   In the next section we’ll look at a couple of case studies and what is needed to balance the sweetness in our lives.

 The pancreas’ main function is to assist in transforming and transporting foods and fluid throughout the body, purifying the blood and chi (lifeforce/energy) in the body. So the pancreas has a nurturing, nourishing energy about it.

 In Chinese Medicine, the pancreas is paired with the Spleen Meridian.   This meridian is feminine (Yin); its element is Earth, relating this body-centered organ to the archetypical Mother.

For most of us our mother was the first encounter we had with being nurtured and loved, we were dependant on her care.  Constantly we had to watch, anticipate and respond to her needs and wants, trying our best to make her happy. What an emotional rollercoaster!  A smile or a frown can change our perception that the world is safe or dangerous.  And we carried these emotions, these feelings and our ways of coping with them all through our life.

 The brain is the first to record traumatic events and experiences.  When the brain can’t handle the excess stress it passes it on to an organ in the body, which immediately records the emotion.

 The need to be loved is a secret hunger for the Pancreas.  Eating is a social act that has deep emotional meanings.  Early in life food somehow got mixed up with love and caring — we started eating because we felt undernourished and/or didn’t get enough nurturing. There are also some of us who eat to feed the hungers caused by stress or loneliness. All this has an impact on our pancreas, affecting our energy, our attitudes and blocking our metabolism.

The Pancreas is also extremely vulnerable to intense emotions and feelings caused by a reaction to an outer event.  In fact both the spleen and pancreas react to serious events that can affect us for life.  These two organs absorb most of our severe shocks.

Emotional shocks felt physically and emotionally by the body are recorded by the unconscious mind in two-thousandths of a second!  Physically we can dress and heal our outer wounds but the memories of the trauma become imprinted in the unconscious mind. When something or someone triggers that memory, it resurfaces activating a rush of adrenalin, fear and stress in our lives.

LOW BLOOD SUGAR AND ITS PROBABLE CAUSES

When writing Daniel Condron’s (intuitive thoughts/feelings/ideas on diabetes and the pancreas, (see above) my mind searched to understand his true meaning.  Words Daniel spoke of, like refusing to give, holding back and selfishness all seemed (to me) to be trapped in a web of ‘Self Interest’.  Most dictionaries describe selfishness  as “an excessive interest in oneself”, or egoism.   But I wanted to go deeper, I wanted to get to the ‘Source’ of how a person becomes selfish in the first place.  How is it they become blind to the need of others?

We know the pancreas/spleen thrives on being understood, accepted and loved.  When functioning at its fullest, we feel good about ourselves….we give unconditionally to others and experience a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.

But what happened along the way that the pancreas didn’t get its needs (love, nourishment) met?  Where was it that a person’s normal development of personal power (the ego) got thwarted?  Was it someone very close and dear (a parent, caregiver, teacher) who kept telling them as child they weren’t good enough, smart enough or strong enough to make the grade.  Was the parent(s) emotionally cold, depressed or consistently unavailable?  Perhaps verbal and physical abuse as well?

 When a mother/parent is emotionally distant, the child soon learns to keep his/her own distance as well.  Rejection from a parent can lead to a child rejecting the parent which can lead to rejecting his/her own life-force.  To survive, he/she numbs their body, numbs their feelings, constricting and minimizing their life energy.  Holding it in, they look and appear independent, others admire their independence, but they are virtually alone in their own world, determined to avoid, at all costs, being vulnerable to rejection.

The pancreas/spleen is also affected when a person is told over and over  “you’ll never make it”, “you’ll never be good enough”, or is being overly controlled.  Its energy draws in on its Self, the individual feels frustrated, hurt, discouraged and brokenhearted….wounded, the pancreas starts to shutdown.   When this happens, an alarm sounds off!  The Heart and Heart Meridian gets its lifeforce from the pancreas/spleen meridian.  The body/mind sensing something isn’t working as it should, tries to takes over and in the pancreas’ case, fights to gain a sense of control.  But if a person is unable to express his/her anger to his/her abuser, their sense of self-worth is threatened and the pancreas becomes doubly wounded.  This can also lead to craving for sweets and rich foods, which indicates a way of compensating for the lack of love in one’s life.

If only a person could see how much he/she is truly loved and admired by others.

Anger is a way of protecting our boundaries and showing others we will not tolerate others intimidating or injuring our own sense of worth.  Unfortunately, everything and everyone is seen as a threat and  the angry person finds themselves in a vicious circle of conflict, causing separateness, loneliness and despair.  As Louise Haye, Caroline Myss and others have noted,  ‘the sweetness is gone’.

 Balancing receiving with giving helps us to experience a deep sense of satisfaction and fulfillment.  Not only do we feel accepted by others but we also begin to accept ourselves.  We escape from the circle of constantly needing to achieve to get others approval in order to feel worthy and accepted.  The next section will delve into this more.

If you’ve read this article from the beginning, you’ll remember the Element ruling the pancreas/spleen is Earth.  The Earth’s highest expression is being there for others…it is the comfort-giver and empathizer, graciously supporting and caring ALL who are in need.  An Earth person is wonderful to be around.  They listen attentively to your problems and know exactly what to say to make you feel better.  They love to please.  At their worst, Earth people worry and overthink everything excessively!  This of course can prevent the mind from seeing the truth objectively, restless and searching everything seems in a muddle and they can’t make a decision.

But what happens when the Earth person lacks the solid inner foundation of self-esteem this motherly archetype provides.  Toxic waste strips them of their natural resources and severs their connection to Her rhythmic cycles.  This in turn has triggered a painful disconnection from their own inherent nature.

My mother suffered abuse and rejection as a child and this spilled over to her own children.  It’s a wonder all four her children didn’t get diabetes.

It was my brother who suffered from and absorbed her feelings.  Leonard was sensitive to her struggles of unworthiness which in turn made him feel isolated and unworthy.  He was only 8 when they discovered his fainting spells were caused from a lack of sweetness in his life, projected from the mother.  As an adult, he  seriously believed he’d never be able to love another because of this serious health problem.  He never quite felt he belonged.  In an attempt to cover this up, Leonard bent over backwards to make everyone else’s life happy and fulfilled.  He gave of himself freely what he felt he didn’t deserve himself.  He constantly rejected any praise from others, he couldn’t accept their compliments.  He was so focused on his own failures and limitations, he couldn’t see what others saw that was right and good about him.  He didn’t believe in himself.  If only he could have seen how others saw how wonderful and lovable he was, perhaps he would be alive today.

THE PLANET VENUS

This leads us to Astrology, especially the planet Venus.  Venus rules the secretion of insulin, the assimilation of sugars and carbohydrates in the body.  She also rules the saliva in relation to digestion, the swallowing reflex  as well as the our sense of taste, touch and smell.

In the next section we will see what happens when Venus is strong in a natal chart and in difficult aspect to other planets.  In a couple of case studies we’ll look at this and a person’s predisposition to hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) or diabetes.

 In ending this segment I’d like to quote what Jeanne Avery wrote in her book ASTROLOGY AND YOUR HEALTH…..

“Almost all people who are psychic or who work in areas where psychic energy is an essential commodity, have a predisposition to hypoglycemia or diabetes.  This is particularly true of clairvoyants, mediums and astrologers.  Such problems are also common in people who work as therapists and healers.  People in these fields seem to have a particularly heavy draw of energy from the solar plexus area, which includes the pancreas.  This is the center ruling the emotional body.  If the balance of love and pleasure is disrupted or destroyed, that area of the body may be afflicted.  It is very important for healers to allow pleasure and love to be a major part of their lives.  These dedicated people give a great deal of their universal love energy and frequently have a lack of that energy on a personal level.  With this kind of imbalance, energy is also drained from surrounding organs such as the kidneys, spleen and gall bladder.  It is necessary to consider all of the related planets when a diagnosis is made.”

Those who have high blood pressure are often over-active, as if doing everything possible to avoid themselves. Activity is a way of averting aggressive or emotional impulses – high blood pressure is symbolic of feelings not being expressed or even acknowledged, creating a buildup of inner pressure. As the emotions begin to spill over, physical difficulties can develop. It is essential that we learn how to read the signs before damage is done, and to connect more deeply with what is seething just below the surface. These are hot emotions which, if ignored for too long, create a great deal of damage.
 
What is getting you so heated? Are you applying the pressure yourself or is it coming from outside you? Are you trying to avoid something that is making you angry or upset? If high blood pressure is due to panic or fear, we need to recognize the insubstantiality of external events to reconnect with our inner balance. We’ve all had our adrenalin and blood pressure rise at some point in our lives; it peaked for a few moments or hours then slowly returned to normal. But for some it does not return to its ‘normal’ level. When it doesn’t, it’s labelled hypertension. Our blood pressure is controlled by the brain which goes through a cyclical rhythm throughout the day reacting to stresses and anxieties caused by outside influences. These cycles can affect the normal rhythm of the body and the blood’s circulation.

Blood pressure is controlled by the autonomic (involuntary) nervous system which works similar to a plane on ‘autopilot’. It ensures that your organs, such as your lungs or heart work without you thinking about it. Your awareness of this system is triggered when your body is threatened or needs (cries out) for your undivided attention. It is your nerves that carry these messages to the Thalamus also known as the ‘brains inner room’ . The Thalamus relays these nerve impulses to the cerebrum (responsible for our ability to speak, read and write) and helps you to realize ohh I’m in pain! Other areas of the brain tell you exactly where the hurt is coming from. The hypothalamus controls the movement of the heart, gut and bladder; makes us feel hungry, thirsty; feel angry or aggressive; and stops us from falling alseep during the day.

So high blood pressure is a perfectly natural response of the body under stressful conditions and exercise. When you go for your daily jog, your heart rate increases and your blood pressure goes up. The problem is when the blood pressure remains high after the stress has been eliminated and the exercise session ended.

Also, obesity and heart disease are escalating at an alarming rate, young and old alike…..and our children are more than ever before taking perscription medications for health……..and behavioral problems.

HYPOTHALAMUS AND MENOPAUSE

When progesterone, estrogen decreases, it affects the pituitary gland which is connected to and triggers the ovaries. It also has an intimate connection with the hypothalamus (that tiny gland in front of pituitary)….which reads our emotional reactions and tells us what ‘we ourselves have programmed’ to feel is alright or if there is a problem.

Doctors once believed that since the blood pressure is controlled by the autonomic nervous system it wasn’t humanly possible to have conscious control of it. It has taken years of of several body/mind techniques to prove that the mind is definitely capable of taking charge. Before we venture into the study of these techniques, let’s look at the physical causes of high blood pressure.

PHYSICAL CONDITIONS AND HYERTENSION

There are many physical conditions that can elevate our blood pressure. Stress, smoking, salt, kidney disease, liver congestion, arteriosclerosis, nutrition and sometimes even tumors can cause our high blood pressure to rise.

STRESS

Stress can temporarily raise our blood pressure. It can be caused from an argument at home, with your boss, kids, spouse as well as fear, financial problems and other emotional problems that affect our sympathetic nervous system (SNS). When activated our SNS activates the adrenal glands to produce a hormone which tightens up or narrows the diameter of the blood vessels. This defense mechanism is actually supposed to help you function more efficiently by increasing the amount of oxygen and nutrients in the body’s tissues and cells. Temporarily this increase isn’t harmful unless you already have high blood pressure……in some instances this can cause a stroke.

As we age, the Hypothalamus can become overreactive and affect our stress fight/flight response. When the hypothalamus sees a problem it tells our adrenals, (adrenals see everything as a problem) and they pour out the adrenaline. The adrenals are situated just on top of the kidneys and help us through emergencies in life. If we are threatened the body produces adrenaline and cortisol (the ‘stress’ hormone) which creates within the body an intense flooded feeling even panic. Cortisol stays in the body longer than adrenaline, interferes with digestion and suppresses the immune system allowing tumors if present, to grow faster. Cortisol can create a fearful, threatened feeling that overstimulates our whole system. Unexplained muscle aches, chronic headaches, feeling hopeless or helpless and crying more than usual are signs of chronic overarousal. Anxiety coupled with cortisol has been known to cause unexplained heart palpitations, a nervous stomach, road rage and short temperedness.

FUTURE SHOCK

It was the book Future Shock (1970) that first described the diastrous effect of an accelerating ‘modern’ world on human life. Many other books since, have exposed this theory that too much change too fast weakens the body as well as its emotional and mental well being. Even if we are surrounded by material comfort, it will not reverse the damage done. The medical term for wear and tear upon the body is STRESS.

The widespread incidence of heart disease is increasing at an alarming rate…its becoming an epidemic. Not only men but women are suffering from hypertension and over half of all deaths result from circulatory disease. Not only that there has been an increase in the sale of sleeping pills which certainly indicates insomnia and sleeplessness is a major health problem and a precursor for other ailments including mental illness. And what about the stress on our children? Fighting, guns, knifes and behavioral problems are running rampant all over the world. Stress has become a serious problem!

SMOKING causes the blood vessels to constrict, decreasing oxygen and nourishment to the body as well as increased blood pressure. Nicotine has a stimulating effect on the adrenal glands which sends out a hormone (cortisol) to help defend the body from this toxin.

Also, smoking has been linked with cancer, osteoporosis, migraines, early menopause, immune disorders, insommia, stress, insulin reduction and many other problems.

“Cortisol imbalances due to inflammation can cause fatigue in several ways. Because cortisol is designed to keep you alert in times of stress, it can cause insomnia, and the lack of quality sleep will make you tired. Cortisol also suppresses insulin production to keep the sugar available for muscles in a stress response, and can result in low blood sugar, which will also make you fatigued. Lastly, your adrenal glands can ultimately become exhausted from the constant demands placed on them to produce endless amounts of cortisol, usually as a response to chronic inflammation from a poor diet and smoking.”

But as long as your body is producing cortisol, even if it is just in response to inflammation, the immune system can become suppressed.

Experiments have shown that cortisol can reduce white blood cell production by 38%, and that prolonged elevation of cortisol can damage the thymus gland which produces these immune cells.”

SALT/SODIUM CHLORIDE

In this fast paced world many of us are digesting too many processed foods which are extremely high in salt content. Energy drinks designed to ‘boost’ your energy and keep you awake are ladened with caffeine and salt. When the body is overtaxed with these substances, it short-circuits and literally blows a fuse, which causes your system to breakdown. Salt is one of the most powerful stimulants for the body!

When sodium levels become excessive, wastes cannot be discharged from our cells and nutrients are not absorbed as well either. When this happens, cellular fluid increases and edema (water retention) can occur. This creates extra pressure on the blood vessels which increases the pressure inside causing high blood pressure.

One way of telling if you have too much salt in your system is by the amount of salt in your perspiration. Do you notice a white ring under the arms of that dark shirt you were wearing the other day. This white residue or dried perspiration is an indication of too much salt accumulation.

KIDNEY DISEASE

The main function of the kidneys (part of the urinary system) is to remove toxins and excess water. They have been known to filter almost 400 gallons of blood a day and over a quart of urine a day!

This helps balance these substances (which include sodium, potassium, chloride, calcium, magnesium, sulfate, phosphate and hydrogen) in the body and keep their normal concentrations in the extracellular fluid. Body fluid volumes, which are regulated by the kidneys, are related to blood volume and the blood pressure in your arteries.”

A sodium/potassium imbalance can prevent the kidneys from eliminating liquid wastes from the body. Smoking has been known to be a contributor to kidney disease as well as lack of exercise, too much salt, excessive caffeine and a poor diet. etc.

LIVER

The liver processes about 6 cups of blood each minute….in fact all the blood in the body flows through the liver both to detox and pick up nutrients which it stores. It is one of the most important internal organs and considered the ‘master chemist’ of the body. If it becomes congested with toxins or chemicals a back pressure builds up which can cause hypertension. In fact liver congestion is one of the major causes of high blood pressure and heart problems.

ATHEROSCLEROSIS

Atherosclerosis is caused by a buildup of plaque in the arteries. Plaque is a combination of cholesterol, calcium, triglycerides, blood proteins, etc. that overtime hardens and narrows the arterial system, reducing circulation and oxygen supply to the body.

WHAT ARE THE SIGNS OF ATHEROSCLEROSIS

“Atherosclerosis usually doesn’t cause signs and symptoms until it severely narrows or totally blocks an artery. Many people don’t know they have the disease until they have a medical emergency, such as a heart attack or stroke.***

Some people may have other signs and symptoms of the disease. These depend on which arteries are severely narrowed or blocked.

The coronary arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your heart. When plaque narrows or blocks these arteries (a condition called coronary artery disease, or CAD), a common symptom is angina (AN-ji-na or an-JI-na).

Angina is chest pain or discomfort that occurs when your heart muscle doesn’t get enough oxygen-rich blood. Angina may feel like pressure or a squeezing pain in your chest. You also may feel it in your shoulders, arms, neck, jaw, or back.
This pain tends to get worse with activity and go away when you rest. Emotional stress also can trigger the pain.

Other symptoms of CAD are shortness of breath and arrhythmias (irregular heartbeats).
The carotid arteries supply oxygen-rich blood to your brain. When plaque narrows or blocks these arteries (a condition called
carotid artery disease), you may have symptoms of a stroke. These symptoms include sudden numbness, weakness, and dizziness.

Plaque also can build up in the major arteries that supply oxygen-rich blood to the legs, arms, and pelvis (a condition called peripheral arterial disease). When these arteries are narrowed or blocked, it can lead to numbness, pain, and sometimes dangerous infections.”

HEALTH AND NUTRITION

Again, prepared foods and fast food outlets are taking their toll on our health. It’s only recently they have taken trans fats out of their menus but high sodium levels and saturated fats are still in the food, a precursor for high blood pressure and heart disease.

Just imagine your morning breakfast, consisting of a cup of coffee, cereal, toast, juice, all landing in your stomach simultaneously. How does your stomach sort out the entire mess and how? Forcing the stomach to process all different kinds of food at once is taxing to the system. It’s like trying to balance your check-book, calculate your income tax and figure out a budget, all at the same time! Yikes!

Our body can only take so much interal abuse before it begins to show signs of disease. We need to continue to be on the alert for new better ways to improve our diet, emotions and lifestyle…..they are all closely interwoven.
