Like most of you, I’ve had my weight problems and I’ve had to watch what I eat. A lot of the time I just couldn’t say no to dessert. Why is it, we simply can’t resist eating candy, cake, cookies, or anything that’s sweet? Why do we have such an insatiable craving for carbohydrates?

Hunger begins in the limbic part of the brain which operates through the endocrine system and the autonomic nervous system.  This is the area that plays a key role in regulating food intake and body weight.  When the body is low in blood sugar or glucose, the liver sends signals to the hypothalamus, a small but important gland at the base of your brain.  It’s also the hypothalamus that triggers those hunger cravings that can drive you crazy and make you feel light-headed and irritable.

How many times have you eaten to…..

1) to stuff your anger, rage, despair

2) to numb and comfort yourself

3) to run away or escape from feelings of perceived restrictions

4) to reward yourself after feelings of powerlessness

5) to run away from feelings of loss and deprivation.

 “Overeating has always meant a need for protection. When you feel insecure or frightened, you pad yourself with a layer of safety. Weight has nothing to do with food. It’s amazing how our cells respond to our mental patterns. When the need for protection is gone, or when we start feeling secure, the fat will melt off. I have noticed in my own life that when I am not feeling safe, I will gain some weight. When my life is going so fast, and I’m doing so much, and I’m spreading myself all over the place, I feel a need for protection, a need for security. So I say, “Okay, Louise, it’s time to work on safety. I want you to really know that you are safe, and it’s okay, and you can do all this stuff, and you can be at all these places, and you can have all that is happening right now, and you are safe, and I love you.” The Power Is Within You ~ Louise L. The physical body is a reflection of your thoughts, attitudes, beliefs and emotions, so what you think on, you gradually grow to become. Deep within your muscles, organs and tissues are your memories of past experiences, unexpressed traumas, shocks and despair. The heaviness of these burdens coupled with your own beliefs and judgments, often show up as protective layers of fat carried around in certain tissues of your physical body. Any hurts or misunderstandings that aren’t addressed suppress our energy, causing our bodies to become overweight or ill.

Some of the major causes of overeating is depression, stress, holding back hurts and the fear of not being loved. Whenever we experience these unpleasant emotions our body’s start losing energy….this is when we unconsciously feel the need to replace that lost energy with food. Unfortunately, under stress, we don’t eat wisely, (grabbing for something sweet and starchy) and end up losing more energy processing the food, which creates an even lower energy cycle.

“Food represents mother, love, affection, security, survival and reward. We replace our need or desire for any one of these with food as a way of filling the emptiness within. We use food instead of affection and love, especially at times of loss, separation or death. We also get it to ease financial or material tensions. Eating sweet food is a way of feeding ourselves the sweetness we crave, of temporarily giving to ourselves the sweetness or reward that we may feel nobody else is giving us. Conversely, in expressing our need for nourishment we may also stop eating thereby reducing or shrinking our need for affection to a level that makes no demands at all In this way obesity and anorexia are actually expressing a similar state; that of not loving self and therefore needing outside reinforcement and affirmation, but not receiving that affirmation enough to satisfy the demand. The reaction that state is simply expressing in opposing ways: obesity indicates a loss of personal control, while anorexia implies a highly exaggerated attempt at control.

 All this is dealt with in the stomach. Hence the longings, unfulfilled desires, worldly pressures and external conflicts are first assimilated. Little wonder that they can cause so much upset such as indigestion, ulcers or acidity. How often do we hear someone say that something is ‘eating away’ at him, and then we also find that he has a stomach ulcer. The stomach modifies and breaks down the food and renders it capable of being absorbed, before sending it further down. Food can spend many hours passing through the stomach, so it is not surprising to find that thoughts and feelings can also sit in here for a long time, creating nausea and tension. A rigidly tense stomach area can indicate a resistance to allowing issues to pass through, a holding on to reality in an attempt to prevent inevitable moves and changes. When Sandy came to see me she was a single mother, thirty-nine years old, just over five feet tall and weighing approximately 150 pounds. She knew there were strong psychological forces from her childhood that were playing a part in her overeating. Although she had gone for psychotherapy, it had not succeeded in resolving her problem. The diets she’d tried and groups she joined had helped her to lose some weight but in the end, all her weight returned and then some.

Sandy said she frequently used food or sweets as a source of comfort; during the nights she would toss and turn, questioning why and how she let herself go…going over it again and again until she felt her head would explode. As her anxiety grew, she not only gained weight in her hips and mid-section, she also started experiencing pain in the right side of her stomach…Sandy later discovered the pain was an inflammation of her duodenum (the beginning of an ulcer). Her brain that had been carrying the stress of overeating had discharged part of it into duodenum. In return the duodenum bombarded her brain will painful information, disturbing her sleep.

Every person has a ‘weak link’ an organ or body part that is more vulnerable than the others and this particular body part becomes the main target when the brain or mind becomes overwhelmed or burdened and needs to rid of its excess stress. In Sandy’s case, her ‘weak link’ was her stomach and attached duodenum. The stomach and duodenum represent the Self in relation to others—the stomach reacts to our social life—the duodenum more emotionally intense reactions, which is actually closer to our inner self.

During our first Reiki session, I slowly scanned Sandy’s energy, which felt as if it was tangled in knots and very sticky. Her energy was withdrawn and it really felt as if Sandy was afraid of being touched. It is our senses that give us information we need to function in the world…every move we make, every bite we eat, everything we touch creates a sensation in us. The main task of the body’s central nervous system is to integrate the senses. No one part of the central nervous system works alone. messages are constantly going back and forth from one place to another so that touch can aid vision, vision can aid balance, balance can aid body awareness, body awareness can aid movement, movement can aid learning and so on. But when we are sense-deprived we aren’t getting enough stimulation from the outside.

Your aura is a live communication system, sensing and receiving information around you; it registers the intentions of your thoughts, moods and actions. When we energetically, physically withdraw or avoid being touched, our brains are affected too and can’t tell us how things ‘feel’. We can have trouble analyzing, interpreting and storing sensory memory; we become confused and less confident. Unconsciously, we keep our energy to the back of our body, blocking our own perceptions and our awareness.

At the base of your brain stem is what’s called the Medulla Oblongata. This area at the back of the neck feeds nerve energy to our five senses. When our nerve energy becomes depleted, it’s unable to reach our ears, eyes, throat or mouth. Our five senses are literally starved and react by creating sensory complications (coughing, difficulty swallowing, post nasal drip, acid reflux, eye problems, etc.). Also, when our body system is drained of energy and power, to compensate the loss, it will steal it from our eyes, ear, nose, throat and mouth.

I asked Sandy if she suffered more than most from respiratory illnesses, which she answered with a definite yes. I also wondered if she suffered from allergies and indeed she did. Allergic reactions can affect our heart, stomach, bowels, skin, and nervous system….in fact they can disrupt every bodily system. When we suffer from allergies, lung infections or even the common cold, affect our nutrition, thereby reducing oxygen to our tissues. Low oxygen equals low energy and low energy equals low metabolism and low metabolism can affect our weight.

Alternative healers are not allowed to diagnosis, so I suggested Sandy go to her doctor and ask for a full blood test. I ‘suspected’ she may have low thyroid and/or possibly suffered from hypoglycemia or low sugar. Sandy had mentioned she loved eating sweets of all kinds throughout the day. When we eat high levels of sugar, our blood sugar spikes, then within a half-an-hour, plunges steeply to an all time low. To understand how hypoglycemia develops we need to know how our glucose metabolism works. Our bodies convert all foods to glucose but when too much sugar floods the bloodstream, the pancreas is alerted to send extra insulin to counteract the overload. If you frequently eat a lot of snacks and starches, your overzealous pancreas may start pouring insulin too much too fast. When this happens the sudden drop in sugar can cause a variety of symptoms such as: headaches, anxiety, irritability, tiredness, dizziness, confusion, and even lack of coordination. Of course what we usually do, is reach out for more sugar….a vicious cycle of high/low energy. This certainly seemed what Sandy was going through.

When the Reiki session was over, my sense was that from a very young age, Sandra had been left on her own with little support or emotional nurturing…deep inside was unexpressed pain, anger, and feelings of abandonment. Sandy’s body was definitely under stress. I told her that the body responds to stress by secreting epinephrine and slowing down digestion. Fats, sugars and hormones are released in the body, cholesterol rises, blood pressure rises, heartbeat accelerates, muscle tension increases and more.

Too much epinephrine can cause nutritional deficiencies because it depletes potassium, phosphorus, amino acids, magnesium and calcium. And when the body’s under stress it doesn’t absorb nutrients as well, especially B vitamins and electrolytes which are essential to the body.

People who have been deprived of security and love, especially during their childhood, often have a blockage in their 1st chakra, this can manifest later in life as diabetes, hypoglycemia or overweight.

The next time I saw Sandy, she told me her blood test did show a low thyroid. Although she didn’t mention hypoglycemia, I suspected it too was a possibility. Just a week on Synthyroid had helped to change her disposition and she looked more relaxed, refreshed and her energy patterns were healthier and less tense.

Wanting to know more about her metabolic state, Sandy and I talked about metabolism, which refers to the way your body processes and utilizes the food you eat.

 WHAT IS THE METABOLIC SYSTEM

Most of the food you eat is digested then converted into energy through the process of metabolism. This process involves a complex network of hormones and enzymes that not only convert food to fuel but also affect how efficiently we burn that fuel.

“Your liver is responsible for burning most of the fat in your body. If it is healthy, it pumps out excess fat through bile and helps you keep a healthy weight. However, if your liver is not healthy, it can cause your body to hold on to fat and cause other health problems. If your metabolism is a fast burner, it’s most likely dominated by the adrenal system and the thyroid gland. Both the adrenals and thyroid are dominated by the sympathetic nervous system, which is part of the autonomic system that controls your basic bodily functions such as heart rate, respiration, blood pressure, hormonal balance and of course your metabolism.

If your metabolism is slow, it’s dominated by the parathyroid gland and the pancreas, which are in turn dominated by the parasympathetic nervous system. To become aware of how foods affect you, learn more about what happens to the foods you take into your body. Some food is digested and turned into fuel for the body or new tissue. Some is excreted while some have no nutritional affects and remain in the body. These useless foods usually become fatty deposits and may linger as toxic material lodged in or around the cells of your body. These toxins exhaust/sap your vitality, fog your mind and emotions and cause disease and premature aging.

ARTIFICIAL SWEETENERS

Artificial sweeteners are on the rise but they play havoc with the body’s metabolism and frustrate it to no end.  When the body tastes something sweet, it begins the natural preparation of digesting carbohydrates, but with artificial sweeteners it can’t find them!  When this happens, the body has to compensate somehow and look for carbs elsewhere….it may excessively absorb carbohydrates found in the intestines which forces the body to produce extra insulin which then causes our blood sugar to go too low, resulting in hypoglycemia.  This insulin and blood sugar roller coaster causes the hypothalamus to panic which leads to more carb cravings and more sweets.  It’s an endless cycle that if not managed, can lead to weight gain and progressive obesity.

DIETS DON”T WORK

Have you ever walked into a bookstore or library and noticed the amazing amount of books on health and fitness? There are hundreds of diet and nutrition books available on the market but there are non-superior than the rhythm and wisdom of your own body. When it comes to finding our own personal, optimum diet, we need to take into consideration that each of our nutritional requirements are unique because of our history, metabolism and energy needs. So there is some truth in saying your metabolism is programmed through your genetic information and other various external and internal forces.

Genetically our bodies are engineered for gaining weight and not for weight loss. Many of us blame our lack of willpower for not staying on a diet plan but historians and scientists have proven that for most of the time us humans have been around, there was no steady source of food. Sometimes there was plenty to eat and other times there was none. In order to survive, people’s bodies had to adjust to these conditions of feast or famine. When food was scarce, metabolism would slow down to preserve energy, and when there was plenty, it would speed up.

Dieting places the body in the famine or starvation mode, which is why metabolism slows down when people go on strict diets. When they begin to give into cravings, metabolism speeds up—at least while they’re young. Up until the age of 30, the body can adapt to metabolic changes brought on by dieting and then quitting, but after that it becomes less flexible. With added age, metabolism slows down and stays down. To make matters worse, the weight lost is usually muscle, but the weight gained tends to be more fat then lean body mass. Fat burns fewer calories than lean tissue, with the results that the next time you diet, the pounds will be more difficult to shed.

EXERCISE

If you are planning to add exercise to your program it should be designed for ‘you’ rather than what’s trending right now. I’m not sure about you, but I’ve never been one for conventional exercises…remembering at school, I did everything I could to avoid them!

Exercise should have a lot of variety to it…look around and see what appeals to you; look for an exercise that will leave you feeling good and not sore or exhausted. You don’t have to go to the gym to work out, you could find and combine two or three fun things to do, such as dancing, swimming or even jogging. The important thing is to pick a program and stay with it. The important thing is that you listen to and observe ‘who you are’ and what ‘you need’ at this time in your life and development. Getting in shape is not about the pursuit of perfection…it means making your best effort in whatever you do. Stressing and worrying will only deplete your happy-mood chemicals and deplete glucose levels in your brain. Think long term and don’t go for the quick fix. Just take it day by day. The key word is ‘gradual’.

LEARNING FROM YOUR EATING PATTERNS

I encouraged Sandy to buy a journal and over the next two or three weeks, watch what she ate and how and when she ate to see what more she could learn from that information. I told her not to judge or grudge herself…”all you’re doing is observing and noticing, nothing more. Most of all, drop any feelings of guilt you have about eating “wrongly”: It’s better to eat the “wrong” thing and enjoy it then feel guilty and self-rejecting about it. In fact, it’s probably better than eating the “right” thing with feelings of resentment, longing, or tension. No matter what, feel good about yourself. Food is not your enemy. So many people feel guilty about eating it, or they fear that one bite will lead to a binge. Don’t ever feel deprived, you can enjoy food, as long as you put your eating habits in order and you’ll feel more energetic.

Learning to develop a sensitivity to your own body’s needs is a very gradual process. The body is a creature of habit and preferences, urging/prompting you to buy and eat its most favorite foods. For example it may make you crave for something sweet, when what your body really needs is protein. Often too, we misinterpret the body’s need for water as a hunger sign and eat unnecessary calories when all we really need is a glass of water.

See yourself going through a typical day and visualize all the times that you stopped to take any form of food or drink, whether it was a meal or snack. Consciously recall each time, how you were feeling, what you were thinking and doing before, during and after the meal, snack or drink. Notice particularly whether you were calm and relaxed, tense, tired, emotional, hungry, bored, or whatever. Write down or draw each of those food events as you recall them. (For example: “At 11 a.m., ate a doughnut and drank coffee—needed a break from work.

Try this little exercise….

Sit quietly and close your eyes. Then without directing or judging your thoughts allow them to flow through your mind in relation to your connection with food and eating. Simply let the thoughts happen and write them down in brief words or phrases or even draw them. Close your eyes again and allow more to come. Do this for about five minutes.

Begin to look for habit patterns that are possibly governing your eating. Be honest, but accepting, do not judge what you see as good or bad—simply acknowledge the patterns for what they are.

How often do you eat when you’re really hungry and how often do you eat from habit, a desire or the pleasure of taste. How often do you eat to combat boredom, to console yourself or take away or dissipate negative emotions such as fear, anger or depression.

How often do you eat slowly, peacefully and in a quietly relaxed surrounding? How often do you eat on the run, hurriedly, with tension or anger, while discussing or arguing, while reading, listening to the radio, or watching TV, or involved in some other activity?

How often do you really taste and enjoy what you eat, how often do you find you’ve eaten a whole meal almost without noticing?

How often do you stop when you know you’ve had enough, and how often do you go on eating because it tastes so good, because you don’t want to go back to what you need to do after eating, or because you have nothing else to do?

How often do you feel alert and pleasantly satisfied after a meal and how often do you feel uncomfortably full, have indigestion or feel sleepy and dull?

How often do you eat healthy, nutritious live foods and how often do you junk out on artificial, processed, sweet, carbohydrate or nutritionless foods.

Go over all that you’ve written and try to see a pattern in your eating. Are there specific times of day, days of the week, or situations where you see yourself eating less than at other times?

EATING WITH AWARENESS

Eating with awareness means slowing down and devoting your full attention during a meal, to the actual process of eating, so you can achieve maximum health benefits and enjoyment.

Eat only when you’re hungry. Even if you eat more than someone else, it will benefit you as long as you are hungry. If you don’t seem to getting much enjoyment out of it or not satisfied with the food available, either you aren’t really hungry or you’re eating more than your body requires. When you are hungry, the simplest food tastes most delicious.

After eating you should feel relaxed and alert. If you feel tired or sluggish you know you’ve eaten too much. When you eat less, you’re body will protest and may experience hunger at first…this initial discomfort is caused from getting to know true hunger,…when you’re body knows true hunger, then eating will become an exquisite pleasure and natural fulfillment of the body.

Eat regularly at specific times. Plan each meal and eat enough that will leave you hungry for your next meal. In that way, you will eat only when you’re hungry and will eat regularly as well.

Focus all your attention on what is happening in your mouth as you chew. A significant part of the digestive process begins with enzymes secreted in the mouth. If you do not chew properly, you are bypassing an important stage of the digestive process and forcing your stomach to worker harder than intended…chronic indigestion, gas, and constipation could result.

Avoid eating when you’re angry, excited, tense, depressed, sick, hurried or tired. Wait until your mind becomes calm and your natural hunger returns. The hunger you experience when tense is not true hunger; it’s mentally induced hunger, designed to provide an outlet for your nerves and anxieties.

Always eat in a pleasant soothing atmosphere. Make your meals colorful and attractive from many food forces. Begin your meal with the gift of gratitude that comes to you from food. A prayerful attitude relaxes you, prepares your digestive system to assimilate the food you eat and to draw more energy from your food.

When eating, simply eat! Avoid distractions such as the computer, talking, reading, listening to the radio or watching tv. All these will divert your attention from the awareness of chewing and tasting your food. When you talk or wondering what to say/write, you’re body must work harder to get the maximum benefit from the food.

Make eating an act of meditation, of reverence for your body and your inner self. Be fully aware of what is occurring in your body. Visualize your digestive system and feel that the food is being converted into vital energy for the sustenance of your body, mind and spirit.

If you overeat, accept yourself. You probably will overeat at times and that’s natural. Learning to be aware of your eating habits will happen gradually.  Don’t get discouraged, you’ll eventually become the best adviser for your own energy and bodily systems

Your very first breath of life, anchors your soul in the Causal and physical body.  The Causal body is where your life plan, life tasks, karma and astrological makeup are stored as well as ‘permanently stored past life information’.  There is a very strong connection between the Causal, Astral and Mental fields, as well as several bodily pathways that include the brain, nervous system, endocrine glands and immune system.   

Many have described the Causal as multi-layered, round and similar to an onion…the most outer layers are easily accessible, the inner layers much more difficult to obtain. We all need the intelligence of this field to solve problems, help us evolve, find new directions, new methods and a new sense of self.  When we tap into this wellspring of information we discover an endless supply of wisdom and information.  The Causal contains several layers of survival information as well as a record of all our previous lives. 

The content of the causal body is the accumulation by slow and gradual process of the good in each life.  The building proceeds slowly at first, but towards the end of incarnation, – on the Probationary Path and on the Path of Initiation – the work proceeds rapidly.  The structure has been reared, and each stone quarried in the personal life.  On the path, in each of its two divisions, the work of completing and beautifying the Temple proceeds with greater rapidity…” Alice Bailey 

When I read this quote from Alice Bailey, I had a vision of Blacksmiths, Goldsmiths, the Mayas. Egyptians and Masons, who learned, with their hands, to take nature apart and put the pieces together in a new and more powerful combination.  It made me think of words like structure, patterns, architectural plans and how they are all fashioned geometrically in design.  I thought of crystals and how they’re put together and the way atoms are made of their parts.  I visualized the spiral structure of DNA resembling several layers of different parts put together.  I realized the creativity and skill of ancient monuments and world carved giant stones are embodiments of universal truths and the product of their creativity. They are, just like the Causal Body a timeline of many stories that exist within us and without.  I have learned that as we awaken and develop our soul power, we raise our vibrations and open up the channels to our Spiritual Self.

We live in a world of interrelationships…each of us is connected to every other being on this planet and as well to the many dimensions that spiral up to the original source.   Your Soul (Higher Self) is a dynamic, growing life-force existing in an intricate network of energies where all beings unite as one multidimensional consciousness.  Your higher self is the very essence of who you are and holds a wealth of knowledge from ALL your lifetimes.    

Our souls are connected to all other souls on earth and all other great beings in the universe.  Through our souls we have the ability to communicate with higher levels of consciousness through prayer and meditation.  When we are in this state we have a sense of unity with all things.  This is what the Causal Body is all about.  It is both individual and universal.  When in contact with your soul, there is a part of you that is detached, that is listening and watching all the events in your life.  This is where its power lies.  Your causal/soul body is both the observer and the participant at the same time.  You must observe yourself as you observe others, hear yourself as you hear others.  You must be able to see yourself as others see you and understand.

The causal body stores emotionally charged and repressed information from this lifetime and past life memories.  Connected to the etheric field (mirror of the physical body) it then has connections to the seven major chakras and seven major endocrine glands of the body.  The number 7 and the number 12 have great significance in the architectural building of the causal body or ‘temple of the soul’.  7 is the combination of 3 (The Divine) and 4 (matter)….its ultimate goal, unification.  The number 12 represents twelve soul types linked to the twelve astrological signs, known as the zodiac.  There is a tremendous history in the world of astrology dating back to Atlantis and the Egyptians.  It was the Greeks who fine tuned the daily movement of the planets and added mystical gods to each sign which were borrowed from the Egyptians.  Each soul sign holds the key to lessons you’ve learned in each lifetime.  Not only does each sign empower you, they also show weaknesses and repeating challenges that sabotage your effects.

Much of our daily life is concentrated on meeting our basic survival needs like keeping ourselves and our families fed and clothed and the daily routine of working for a living, paying the rent and the bills on time. Although we aren’t conscious of it, each day, we pass around the great astrological wheel, moving slowly through each of the 12 zodiacal signs for the unfoldment of our soul.  If we were aware of this, we would see how we affect other people, our environment, and our own lives. We would see just how important our own life is and how all things are connected.

I wrote this on the Aeclectic Tarot Forum as tink27 (Cosmic Tarot, Wheel of Fortune), “In a twenty-four hour period, we spin around the wheel of life as the risk-taker (Aries), the sensual self (Taurus), the inner-child (Cancer), the creative self (Leo), the analyzer (Virgo), the projected self (Libra), the secret self (Scorpio), the truth-seeker (Sagittarius), the ambitious self (Capricorn), the individualist (Aquarius), and the spiritual self (Pisces).

And it can be a continual turbulent rollercoaster if we aren’t balanced and can’t adjust to the many different changes in direction that can occur on a daily basis. I think this symbol can also reveal startling revelations if we are grounded and aware. The wheel of fortune can open doors to our higher desires. It can also force us to face our demons….to do a lot of soul-searching to discover what is blocking or isn’t working in our lives.”

We did not come here by chance.  We decided to enter the karmic wheel through birth with a will to fight, and with the courage to experience many trials and tribulations to change and heal our lives. The Causal body encourages us to become attuned to our own mental and spiritual well-being and is characterized by the twelve petalled lotus, which we’ve come know as the twelve soul signs or  the twelve great states of mind, known as the zodiac.

“The petals of the lotus open in a specific order depending on various individual factors, but in general the three knowledge petals are the first to unfold, followed by the love petals, and then the sacrifice petals. The three innermost petals are the last to open. They are activated by forces flowing from the monad during the third and fourth initiations. (See Figure 2.)  That Jewel within the lotus is similar to a seed that we not only nurture and give life to, but also a purpose. If you know the glyph of the Sun in astrology (a point within a circle) the jewel within the lotus could be this symbol, representing the many cycles of life, death, rebirth all condensed into one initial point. And it takes a lot of hard work, time and nurturing for a seed to begin to grow, so its essence wouldn’t begin to unfold until after many incarnations. The twelve petalled lotus is about weaving the knowledge of past, present and future into an intricate web of wisdom and understanding.

Carl Jung believed that there is a repeating story in everyone’s life that is related to the ancient myths. He called these ancient myths, archetypes. Each archetype has its own special story that helps us find meaning in our lives. We have been fascinated by these myths which are multicultural in nature and have exchanged or cross-fertilized their information through time. Now, many of these old stories are rising up and being awakened and reborn.

We are in truth composed of a metaphysical and psychological anatomy. All your past lives have helped to mold and fashion who you are today. In fact I believe this information is stored in several different areas in the physical and spiritual bodies. When the Causal body recognizes information that may be pertinent to you right now, it releases that info via the body’s nervous system which affects endocrine glands and the autonomic nervous system, which affects the brain. All this occurs in less than a second! If we could see this visually it would look like colorful flashes of hyper energy overlapping one another.

Once in a while we are given glimpses of different lifetimes through our dreams, our intuition and through meditation.  The soul knows when the moment is right for you to access a past life and bring it to the surface.  If you feel stuck or there’s an area in your life that keeps repeating—pay attention and watch for clues!  Your Soul (Higher Self, Inner Wisdom) is always talking to you through your intuition and feelings.  It also communicates through coincidences and synchronicities – in the form of people, newspapers, books movies and anything else that will give you the message(s) you need to hear.  As you strengthen your connection to your higher self, you will experience many more insights, revelations and heightened awareness.

When we heal ourselves and create the reality we want to live in, we are happier and share our happiness with others, through a smile or a gentle act or conversation. We help brighten up others’ spirits, and they then pass it along to others. If this energy is strong, it can flow through many, many people. It is like the chaos theory: a minute change can have a huge effect in the long run.

Think of all the people you effect through your words and actions. Do you want your world to be filled with happiness, peace, understanding, joy? Then learn to accept these things in your life, in the present moment. If you feel they are too distant for you right now, then simply choose to be willing to allow these into your life.

I’d like to end this article with a wonderful reading, channeled by the late Edgar Cayce.  The whole reading is very long so we’re going to step into a conversation between God and the Master,(known to us as Jesus).  In the beginning of the channeling, we are told the Master had lived many other lives, namely Amilius, Adam, Enoch, Hermes, Melchizedek, Joseph, Joshua, Asaph, Jeshua and Zend.  “In none of these lives had the Master lived a perfect life, but he had done much to point the way to God.  Several times, he had given to the lost souls revelations from God which described God’s mysteries and which should have served as a blueprint for their salvation.  But each time, the meaning of the revelations was forgotten when the Master departed….Before the master returned [to earth] again to achieve his goal, God came to him and spoke lovingly and affectionately.  “My dearest son, you have done well.  You do not have to return to earth, you can stay with Me forever in heaven.”

The Master replied, “I thank You, Father, for Your love, but I also love my brothers and sisters.  I want to show them the way, which I have not yet wholly done.  I am ready now to live a perfect life in materiality.  I will not fail this time.”

God recognized the commitment and love of the Master for his brothers and sisters and was pleased.  However God also warned him, “Although I too think you are ready to complete the task you began long ago, you should know that your life on earth, even if it is perfect, will be one of suffering and difficulty.  You have set certain patterns in your earthly record, which, if you return, you must meet and finally overcome.  When you lived as Joshua, for example, you killed many people.  If you are to complete your earthly mission, you must heal and restore life to the people in the areas where you took life before.  And you must endure death and experience some of the agony you inflicted on others.  If you do all this and do not err, your mission will be complete.  You will have removed the penalty of death which you incurred as Adam.  The way for all to follow will be shown and they will not forget this time.  The bond will be restored between Me and My sons and daughters.” 

The master knew what lay ahead, but he praised God and humbly said, “I am ready.”

The astral body can be thought of as a field of energy occupying roughly the same space as the aura, but constantly shaped and reshaped by patterns of thought and feeling. All images, words, and sensations affect this body, and are affected by it in turn; it interacts freely with the astral level of the cosmos, and with the astral bodies of other human and non-human beings. It contains most of those parts of the self we normally think of as “mental” or “inner”— intellect, emotion, imagination, will, and memory, the instruments of concrete consciousness — and it is also the basis for the individual personality.***

The mental body can be thought of as the essential pattern of the Soul. It can be described as a subtle “body” only in a highly metaphorical sense, and cannot be located in a spatial sense at all. This body is the instrument of abstract consciousness — that is, thought that does not involve forms and images of the sort we perceive with our senses — and thus makes it possible to perceive the core ideas or structures of experience, which exist outside of space and time.

The etheric, astral and lower mental bodies, all correlate with our physical existence on earth.  Each one of us is a unique human being, with particular personality characteristics and a spiritual essence or soul.

The astral reacts to emotions, feelings, and memories that are recorded and triggered in and from the etheric field, which impregnates every cell, tissue and organ in the physical body.  The etheric field, apart from the astral body has it own nervous system which is composed of a vast network of energy lines colored with violet or gray forces of light that surround and interpenetrate the body anchoring itself in the heart, the brain, and spleen of the physical body. Every cell within the human body is permeated and enclosed by this etheric matter. The tiny vessels called nadis are similar to the nerves of the body except that they are exposed and vulnerable to the slightest vibration.  As these webs of energy known as the nadis or etheric nerves  criss-cross one another they form  major cross-over points that look similar to the hub of a wheel.  These major crossover points connect and breathe life into the 7 major chakras, which also underlie and control the endocrine glands.  

The astral body, (called the desire body or field of senses) is not only a reflector of your feelings and emotions, it is also your relations to people, animals, plants, your environment and the universe.  The astral field surrounds and envelopes the etheric field, extending as far out as a foot or so from the physical body, it is filled with colors, textures and shapes, constantly expanding and contracting, depending on a person’s mood and emotional state.  If we could see the emotional richness of this field, it would be a wondrous display of flowing colors, changing at the slightest shift in one’s mood and behavior.  

Have you ever thrown a small stone into a pool and watched as it gently disturbed the surface the water?  It sends out waves of ever-increasing circles, radiating out in all directions…..If more than one stone was thrown, the waves would splash in all directions….anyone close to that particular shore would have a good chance of getting wet.  This is one example the astral can affect others energy.  But there is another way too.  The waves from the water also sends out sounds or vibrations ….concentric circles resonating through the air.  If the sound of the stone was loud hitting the water, the vibrations in the air would be fast and erratic…a whirlwind of energy.  Just imagine how far those vibrations could go!

The astral field can be cluttered with passions, experiences, worries, regrets, negative self-images, memories, actions, reactions, emotions, analyses, hopes and fears.  From the time we learnt to express ourselves verbally, we have struggled to find words that would express our feelings that would be ‘acceptable’ to our friends, parents and teachers.  We began to wear masks to disguise our true feelings from others, to protect ourselves from criticism and disapproval.  Every time we do or say anything or have anything done or said to us, we add another distraction and our true self gets buried deeper and deeper.  The more we hold in and hold back our thoughts and feelings, this flux of energy can have a direct affect on the body’s nervous, endocrine, muscular and immune system.  

(Interestingly, the word endocrinology comes from the Greek words meaning ‘within’ and ‘I separately’ and this truly explains the role it plays in our lives.  Each of these centers has a symbolic meaning….looking at the seven endocrines from the top of the head down,  the pituitary is  considered the ‘master gland’, the pineal is known as the ‘third eye’, the thyroid represents ‘our power to choose’, the thymus is ‘the director of the immune system’, the adrenals are called the’ fight/flight center’, and the testes (male) and ovaries (female) continue our existence as a species. 

“It is…known that the most powerful chemical created in the body come from..[the] endocrine glands.  Likewise, it has been found that each is a neurohormonal transducer—able to convert electrical energy in to hormonal energy, and vice versa.  A neuro-hormone is a hormone that affects nervous system function or a hormone released due to nerve stimuli.” William A. I’m getting a little ahead of myself here in regards to the nervous system, endocrines, chakras and aura, which we will look at in detail later.  But I felt it was important to have some understanding of the endocrine glands, which are both physical and spiritual ‘beings’.  These 7 spiritual/glandular centers have a consciousness of their own and each is related to the other 6 through our nervous system and the hormones in the blood.  Each one of us has a ‘group’ of amazing consciousnesses inside our being….each with its own history and experiences.  And, each center has its own attitude, responses, feelings and works differently in any given situation.  It is the nervous system and these seven areas of consciousness that make each of us unique, showing how we’ve communicated with spirit flowing through our bodies.  Carl Jung was one the first to see and understand this, birthing the concept of  ‘the archetypes’.  

“….the easiest way to work with the chakras physically and through their associated endocrine glands.  Each chakra is affiliated with a specific gland.  Endocrine glands produce hormones, substances that stimulate growth and development.  There are nearly 100 known hormones in the body.  Working with a chakra through diet, intentional healing, holistic processes, and other means can create optimum function for the related gland and the entire region related to that chakra.” Cyndi Dale 

As well, clairvoyants, healers and those developing a greater spiritual awareness are aware of the subtle fields and energy patterns that reflect what may be happening or what’s about to happen to a client’s physical and emotional levels.  Just as an illness can manifest in the subtle bodies, healing too often comes through the subtle fields before it can manifest in the physical, which is why many healers work, at least partly in the aura, without laying their hands directly on the physical body.  Sensing the subtle fields gives us a clue of problem areas that are excessive, weak, tense, blocked or held in by the client.  Healing relaxes, de-stresses and unclutters the mind.

Most of us are awkward in expressing our feelings at one time or another.  The reason is that we rehearse in our minds what we want to say before we say it.  The complexity involved with talking this over within ourselves is happening so fast we’re not even aware of it.  The problem with this is that we usually lose touch with the original, basic feeing that emotionally motivated us in the first place.  So when we express something different than what we originally felt, a split occurs between the body, mind, and our feelings and expressions.  

When two people interested in each other, come together, they immediately create and project hair-thin threads of auric energy.  These threads connect the two auras, feeding emotions and data from one to the other.  All communication between the connected individuals is accomplished through the subconscious mind and telepathy.  But when we are not expressing our true feelings, we are not being real, authentic, other people can feel this on a subtle level though they don’t interpret the feeling consciously.  

“The electromagnetic field that surrounds your Earth and moves through the entire universe is continually adjusted and affected by your every move, thought, and action. Thus you are part of the intricate web of energy that flows through the entire cosmos. As you can effect the energy of the entire cosmos, so too you can effect the energy of each other. You have the ability to send love to the farthest reaches of creation and at the very moment that you send the energy, your intention makes it so. This puts you right smack in the intricate web of energy that flows through the entire cosmos. Something so simple as an act of kindness will pulse along this intricate net of connections, sending and spreading positive feelings in all directions.  

*I still remember when I was in the ER with my oldest son who had accidentally stepped on an old rusty nail.  The wound had been cleansed and we were waiting for the nurse to give him a tetanus injection.  On the other side of the room was a woman crying and sitting all alone.  I felt so sad that I couldn’t do anything for her.  On impulse I sat beside her and held her hand.  I still remember the smile that arose upon her face, her eyes all watery.  The woman seemed so relieved, so happy.  I thought, I would cry too.  Words simply cannot explain what happened that day.  All I can say is that I’ve never looked upon simple touch as so simple after all.  When I spoke of this to my healing teachers and friends, they said healing energy was being transferred to the woman.  But I see it differently.  We are all energetically interconnected, there is no separation.  Energy is what we are and when we learn to dance with the energy and share it with others, this is what truly makes us what we truly are.  So don’t be afraid to ask others if they need a hug.  And don’t be afraid to ask if you need one.  And even beyond touch, don’t be afraid to smile and say hello to strangers walking past.  As a society we need to move beyond the fear we have toward each other.   

Emotions are what God used when creating the Universe.  Without emotions, art, music, the stars, singing birds, earth, angels and you would not exist.  The word emotion comes from the Latin meaning ‘to move out from’.  Energy must be free to flow in order for love to exist.  Just as the blood in your veins needs to flow in order to keep you alive, energy, e-motion, needs to flow to keep your soul qualities of love, health, abundance and creativity alive within in you.  

If you think about it, everything you desire is tied up in your emotions.  All the joy, all the abundance, all the love and all the peace, energy, enthusiasm and playfulness are all part of emotion.  When you suppress your feelings of sadness, grief, anger and pain, you also suppress the love and joy along with them.  Emotion is the key to creation and an important step in becoming your higher self.  

Suppressing your emotion will not make it go away.  The stagnated emotion will reside in your auric field, in the muscles and cells of your body…and begin to make up your energy.  This core energy has a resonance, and this will in turn begin to resonate with similar energy patterns.  These energies can be events or other people.  So no matter how you try you will not succeed in escaping the pain…you’ll take it with you wherever you go and possibly increase the load as years go by.  

I have learned that as soon as something starts to go ‘wrong’ in my life, it means that I am no longer in the upward spiral.  Almost every time something isn’t working for me it has lead to a release of something, and mostly it meant forgiving someone else and myself in the process.  I’ve also learnt that the release and expression of emotion is the key to allowing more love, joy and abundance in my life, I have also learned there is a fine balance between delving into my past and staying in it.  

One of the issues that everyone faces when clearing up their emotional debris is how to let go of the situation and the beliefs surrounding it.  To do this we have to understand the ‘mind’ and the mind isn’t just in the brain but in every part of the body.  It is constantly recording stimuli and input and experience.  The mind is the seat of all our beliefs, perceptions, experiences, memories and aspirations.  It is the most powerful tool we have in our possession and also the most difficult one to control.  A portion of the mind, is also connected to the autonomic nervous system which is always active, even while asleep, giving us the gift of life by keeping our organs and systems working together, by controlling our circulatory system, breathing, heart-rate, blood pressure, etc.   The autonomic is also the domain of your unconscious mind, your dreams and all your memories of present and past lives.  We’ll explore all this in Part IV of the Subtle Anatomy, the Causal Body. 

Within the soul and higher self lay all the answers as to why an event, relationship or circumstance happened and the reason why.

*The skin really is the body of the soul.  It is actually one of the richest sources of all the hormones found in the body.  So when we stimulate the skin we can cause a shower of healing chemicals into our blood stream.  One of the most important of these are growth factors or growth hormones.  By simply stimulating the skin we can produce these growth factors or hormones right into our blood stream.  Like the other organs, the skin is also the seat of emotions.  When we are deeply moved we say we were deeply touched.  We describe situations as sticky, ticklish or thorny, all these have to do with sensations in our body.  Therefore the experience of touch or sensation linked to a thought is really what an emotion is.  Once again, we can influence emotions, feelings and desires through our skin as a result of the release of these hormones.)

The thyroid regulates and influences the various chemical reactions throughout your body. It produces growth hormones, cell regeneration and repair and helps to maintain our metabolism and oxygen levels. It also produces the hormone thyroxine. Thyroxine contains iodine and the thyroid gland cannot produce this hormone unless our diet contains a small amount of iodine. Too little thyroxine or too much can result in disorders such as Goiter and Dwarfism.

I suffer from hypothyroidism, which can be misdiagnosed as Chronic Fatigue or Fibromyalgia.  (Now more than ever, studies are being done, as indicated above to examine thyroid dysfunctions and behavioral problems).  If you suspect a thyroid problem, the best way to check to this out is through a laboratory blood test. Unfortunately many patients can have thyroid tests come back normal because most standard tests aren’t sensitive enough to identify an underactive thyroid gland or hypothyroidism.  There is a TRH (Thyrotrophin-releasing hormone) that is much more sensitive than the routine blood tests. and can almost prove beyond a doubt that a person is suffering from an underactive thyroid.  It’s a bit more involved but if the normal test is coming back normal, and you suspect your thyroid ‘s hormones aren’t up to snuff you could at least talk to your doctor about it.

I’ve learned the thyroid gland produces three important hormones, Triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4) which require iodine and L-tryrosine for their production. These hormones help to regulate and metabolize the cells in our body. As they are released into our blood most of the molecules bind to blood proteins. 4/6/2013 EAT WITH THE SEASONS
Before we continue, I’d like to interject here a moment before going on, that I’ve learnt something interesting in regard to metabolic and thyroid issues.  Apparently throughout history people ate foods that were available and in season, after all they had no other choice.  For instance, winter time is a time of warm, cooked foods and the ever-famous chicken noodle soup; we enjoy turnips, and even winter squash and finish our dinners with a nice warm pudding or apple pie. But now, thanks to transportation (ships, trains), we can get spring, summer, fall and winter foods all year long.  Apparently this can cause problems with people who suffer from thyroid  and low basal body temperatures…consuming cold, raw foods during winter may affect thyroid function.  Same too can be said about eating too many hot meals in the middle of summer.

We’re in spring now, the vegetables and fruits that are at their peak are asparagus, blackberries, green onions, leeks, lettuces, new potatoes, peas, red radishes, rhubarb, spinach, strawberries and watercress. Depending on where you live, you could probably add to this and the other seasons too.

Summer is a time of apricots, blueberries, cherries, eggplant, fresh herbs, green beans, hot peppers, melon, okra, peaches, plums, sweet corn, sweet peppers, tomatoes and zucchini.

Fall is when apples come into season, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, cauliflower, collards, grapes, kale, pears, persimmons pumpkins, winter squash and yams.

Winter of course is when we bundle up and enjoy beets, cabbage, carrots, citrus fruits radishes, onions rutabagas, turnips and winter squash.

Unfortunately, I can’t list ‘all’ foods, however, depending on where you live, you could find a list of fruits and vegetables that are categorized for each season.  If you do suffer from thyroid problems, perhaps try foods that are in season for a month and see if you feel more energetic, flexible and look healthier too.  If you do, tell us about it!

I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism almost 12 years ago. I started showing symptoms of this dis-ease when beginnning a new job after being a stay at home mom for 11 years. The first signs were heart palpitations and achiness all over my body. When visiting the doctor it was ‘assumed’ I was premenopausal . I wore a heart monitor for a 24 hour period which revealed the upper chamber of the heart was ‘fluttering’……”no cause for concern”, the doc said. My body was also going through temperature changes and mood shifts. The next stage was feeling lethargic and tired almost all of the time. No matter how much sleep, I was always tired, sensitive and on edge, ready to pounce on anyone or anything that got in my way. Waking, I was cold, my eyes and face puffy…no matter how much cream put on my skin, it was extremly dry and flaky. I was a mess!

From advice of friends and family who knew all these moods and changes were out of character, I returned to the doctor’s office. A blood test was taken and revealed my thryoxine levels were extremely low. 50 mcg’s of Levothyroxine Sodium was prescribed. Just four days after taking this, my whole system started balancing itself out. I felt like myself again! Not wanting to be on a drug for life, I discovered L-Tryosine, iodine and high levels of B vitamins were good to change the levels of thryosine (T4) in my system. Trying these, I took myself off of the Levothyroxine and was able to manage without it for two years. During this time, I discovered that the hypothalamus monitors our blood level of T3 and T4. If low the Hypothalamus sends a message via the thyrotropin-releasing hormone (TRH) to the pituitary which then sends its message with the thryoid stimulating hormone (TSH) through the bloodstream. I was amazed at the body’s ability to replenish and repair itself. And so began my journey and initiation into the healing profession. However. the body cannot do it all alone. We are composed of a body, a mind and a spirit. Change one and the others (mental, emotional, spirit) have to adjust to create a balance. Not only was this a new perspective on how and why my body does the things it does, I was also learning how my feelings and beliefs were creating the life I was living.

If the thyroid test had revealed hyperthyryoidism, symptoms include a faster heart rate, hypersensitivity, weight loss, insominia, nervousness, muscle pain, etc.. The hypothalamus would try to reduce or stop TRH which would lower TSH and consequently diminsh the production of thyroid hormone.

I never realized the importance of the thyroid until recently. This gland is not only involved in keeping our hormones aligned, it also keeps all the organs in the body balanced and running smoothly. It also regulates our metabolism, heart rate, blood pressure and body temperature.

This site also describes using a basal thermometer test upon waking in the morning. When you first wakeup, before getting out of bed, place this thermometer under harm and hold it there for about fifteen minutes. There is also a basal chart on this article for you to write down your findings. A temperature of 97.6 or lower could indicate an underactive thyroid.

Also, high estrogen levels can affect the thyroid. Adding progesterone cream has been known to decrease your need for thyroid supplements. Another disease of the thyroid is called Hashimoto‘s thyroiditis, it is where the body creates antibodies against the cells of the thyroid gland.

Hashimoto’s, antibodies react against proteins in the thyroid gland, causing gradual destruction of the gland itself, and making the gland unable to produce the thyroid hormones the body needs.

A ‘Goiter’ (another thyroid problem) is an abnormal enlargment of the thyroid gland. The body’s neck may appear swollen and this can create the sensation of being unable to breathe, hoarseness, food seems stuck in the throat and coughing. It is caused by a shortage of iodine in the diet. With iodized salt introduced back in the 1920’s, this disease isn’t as prevalent as it was back at this time.

My family genetics suffers from most of the above. My brother had his thyroid removed 10 years ago due to a serious disease called thyroid toxicosis or thyrotoxicosis. The recent report from Environmental Defence found alarmingly high levels of bisphenol A – also known as BPA – in of some of the most popular plastic baby bottles sold across Canada. As a result, parents are unknowingly putting their babies at risk.

BPA is known to mimic estrogen and has been linked to early puberty in girls, attention deficit and hyperactivity disorder, and obesity.

“Any baby that’s drinking out of these bottles is going to be ingesting this toxic chemical every time they take a sip,” warned Rick Smith, Executive Director of Environmental Defence.

“This chemical has been linked to thyroid problems in later life, breast cancer in women and prostate cancer in men.”

Fluoride has been a regular addition to tap water all over North America for some time, but recently its presence has been causing a little extra stir.

That’s mainly because of a 2007 Health Canada panel that recommended the fluoride levels in water be reduced. The drug, which is said to help remineralize the enamel in teeth, thus helping to prevent cavities, has been tentatively linked to a rare type of bone cancer like the type
