*Please read the comments below this article as they are up-to-date and express health concerns (regarding the thyroid) that may help you …
If you are feeling hyper, getting heart palpitations, unable to unwind, insomnia or breaking out in a sweat for seemingly no reason, this may be a signal of a hyperthyroid condition. On the other hand, if you feel exhausted, experience insomnia, your skin is drying out, hair is falling out and “crash and burn” about 3PM everyday, these are symptoms of a hypothyroid. ~ Medical Astrology ~ Eileen Nauman
We all know stress in our lives can affect the health of our bodies. How we handle stress and react to it influences every cell in our body. The throat area of the human anatomy is comprised of the esophagus, the pharynx, the larynx, trachea, tonsils, thyroid and parathyroid glands. Energetically this is the center of how we express, listen and assert our will out into the world.
“If you struggle to communicate–whether the difficulty is not listening to others or not expressing yourself effectively–you likely have health issues in the areas of the mouth, neck and thyroid…people with thyroid problems are frequently very intuitive but are unable to voice what they see because they too often struggle to keep the peace or win people’s approval.” ALL IS WELL ~ Louise L. Hay and Mona Lisa Schulz M.D. Ph.D.
There is a list of health related issues regarding problems with the thyroid, for instance, when the thyroid is underactive, and undetected, in time the whole body becomes hypoactive, which literally means the whole body becomes underactive. One of the first things the body does when the thyroid is underactive a.k.a hypothyroidism, is it reduces blood supply to the skin to conserve energy. When this happens we perspire less, toxins can’t find a way out and our skin loses its radiance as well as develops blemishes, acne and other skin problems. Try as you may to treat your skin with expensive creams and tonics, if the thyroid isn’t considered, there won’t be much of a change.
(The skin is our largest sense organ, symbolizing our sensitivity and our self-worth. Metaphysically it is called ‘the body of the soul’. It’s also known to symbolize birth and rebirth as its cells are constantly regenerating….we form a new skin once a month.)
The skin is the body of the soul; Eastern healers often refer to it as the ‘third lung’. Imagine, a tiny piece of skin about the size of a quarter contains 3 feet of blood vessels, 12 feet of nerves, 25 nerve cells, 100 sweat glands, and more than 3,000,000 cells; phew, that’s quite a complex team working 24/7.
Metaphysically, it is said that people who suffer from eczema and psoriasis are ‘weeping through their skin’. With skin problems, some sorrow needs to be expressed, a sorrow for some reason was held in and silenced. So the sorrow manifested itself in painful or irritating rashes. ***
“Thyroid; The Thyroid represents the communication between the Head and the Heart. Thyroid problems most often represent a lack of or miscommunication between what one thinks and one’s Truth. Problems may also represent a lack of ability to speak up for one’s self. **
Dep Shapiro, author of “Your Body Speaks Your Mind”, talks of the Bodymind dialogue: Hypothyroidism……..
***
“The thyroid gland’s proximity to the voice box is most interesting, as hypothyroidism can be due to having spent many years “swallowing” or “stifling” your words or needs, until you are unable to fully express yourself. This is fairly typical for women who easily put others’ needs ahead of their own and whose views or opinions are often deemed less important. If this is the case, then finding your voice and learning to express your thoughts and feelings are vital.
- Are you able to speak up for yourself?
- Does your partner make all the decisions?
- Do you always put other people first, even denying your own needs?
Energy in the throat chakra affects the function of everything from ears to upper chest, the thyroid and parathyroid glands, the trachea and cervical (neck) vertebrae, temporal mandibular joint (TMJ), nose and ears, and mouth (including lips, teeth, and gums). In fact, the Throat chakra energy flows through all different kinds of expression.
“Louise Hay, author of “You Can Heal Your Life” says that Thyroid function has to do with self-expression, but specifically about “having my turn” to do so. She also mentions that the throat area is connected with “our ability to speak up for ourselves, ask for what we want”, and if we shy away from what we want, this “usually means we do not feel we have the right to these things.”
Her affirmation: “I move beyond old limitations, and now allow myself to express freely and creatively.”
Dr. Dharma Singh Khalsa, who’s written several books with Cameron Stauth and devoted his life to Medical Yoga and Meditation, gives us yet another observation of the throat/fifth chakra…….
“One of the most fascinating results of fifth-chakra distress that I have observed clinically is a loss of the so-called twinkle in the eye. It’s hard to define exactly what that spark in the eye is, because it’s a rather amorphous physical condition. It is not simple clarity of the sclera, nor focus of the pupil. Nonetheless, almost anyone can recognize it, and most people are attracted by it…..
Since the fifth chakra, or throat chakra, governs the thyroid gland, it would seem possible that the lack of a twinkle in the eye is merely a reflection of low levels of the stimulating thyroid hormones, T-3 and T-4. However, I believe the truth lies deeper. I think that when the throat chakra is dysfunctional, it robs us of the proverbial spark of life that ignites the twinkle in the eye.” MEDITATION AS MEDICINE: Activate the Power of Your Natural Healing Force ~ Dharma Singh Khalsa, Cameron Stauth
Dharma Singh Khalsa sees the throat chakra as a meeting place or ‘nexus’ for upward bound energies from the lower chakras and downward-bound energies from the upper chakras. It is the throat area where these energies swirl, mix, break-down and come together, “expressed as one’s voice, as the special, original, signature sound of each person”.
A healthy thyroid provides strength to the digestive tract, the arms, the throat, jaws, neck, and the upper arms. It symbolizes self-expression, reflection, and self examination, often interpreted as hearing one’s inner voice. It is calming, lowers blood pressure and decreases respiration. It enhances communication and decision-making.
Within the power of the Throat Chakra, the thyroid strengthens the body, When balanced it strengthens creative self expression, it combats physical dysfunctions in the throat, mouth and voice problems, gum and tooth problems.
Words have a tremendous effect on the body and mind. Silently reciting or chanting a mantra activates a large group of nerves in the throat area, and the creative power of the thyroid gland. The current of sound (thought by the heart and spoken by the tongue) then flows to the thymus gland, stimulating the body’s nervous system.
One of the many issues surrounding hypothyroidism, that I’ve come to know, is a blocked “voice”. There are many of us who were brought up to be quiet, good little children…when emotionally excited, we were told to “shush” and “be quiet”. Growing up it felt wrong when we wanted to speak, to share and express our own feelings/opinions and to comfortably voice them.
Working with people suffering from a blocked thyroid, the one thing I’ve noticed, in a healing, is an emotional release in the throat area, for example, coughing, clearing the throat, sighs, groans, tears, sobs, expressively talking….
Anodea Judith, author of Eastern Body, Western Mind, believes a child who is forced to keep secrets has to carry burdens which holds back the spontaneity of free-flowing speech. Negative experiences can cause a person to deny or repress a part of their truth, usually out of fear, or *shame, and it puts the whole person’s breathing pattern and auric field out of whack. Children forced to keep silent about domestic violence or substance abuse in the family for example, live with a ‘lock’ on their throat chakra, becoming hyper-vigilant, guarded, and separate from what Judith calls the ‘spontaneous, streaming vibration that marks true aliveness’. In short, they are unable to live fully in their truth.
(*Shame is a deep feeling within us of being exposed and unworthy. When we feel shame we want to hide. We hang our heads, stoop our shoulders, curve inwards and try to make ourselves invisible. Emotional abuse is a very shaming experience and those of us who have experienced it, feel humiliated and degraded by the experience.)
So, as an adult, you may have trouble being understood by others when you first meet. Because you lack the spontaneity of speech, the way you speak can confuse or rub people the wrong way. If you lack self-confidence or feel overly nervous, it can show in your words and your body language. Usually adults who’ve had traumas with their 5th chakra, suffer from a lowered self-image which makes them overcompensate, thus sounding insincere or desperate to others. With all the ‘natural’ talent you have inside, just waiting to be accepted and expressed, this can be a very frustrating way to live. The remedy is to take yourself seriously without becoming too serious. Humor and laughter are vital ingredients of your personality. They provide the “finishing touch” to genuine healing.
Conscious breathing will also help to calm your nervous system and overwrought emotions. When we are tense our breathing is short and shallow, we feel it in our chest…when we are relaxed, our breathing is deep and easy, located in our belly. Most people aren’t aware there is a direct relationship between our emotions and our breathing. When we are tense, frightened or angry, our breathing is short, shallow and in our chest. When we are relaxed our breathing is easy, deep and down into our abdomen….this is the breathing of relaxation.
“The diaphragm moves downward as we breathe in, creating a motion, a wave from the lower thoracic (spine) region into the abdominal and pelvic cavities. If we feel happy, excited, or angry, these emotions create an expansion of energy! Our lungs then come into play expanding outward and then contracting. As they contract our feelings pass through our communication center giving expression to our emotions and thoughts. The whole chakra system lights up and dances to the hum of pulsing, whirling, interconnecting lights. We express ourselves freely and openly…..if angered, we release built up tension.
But if we’re in pain, ill, lethargic or sad, our emotions become suppressed, our bodies contract creating restricted and rigid movements.. Breathing becomes difficult and shallow, our blood suffers from the loss of its normal circulation of oxygen. Our bodies become stressed and toxic. We hold back or conceal our thoughts and feelings. Our attention drifts in and out, stimulated only by sudden sounds which draw us back for a brief moment.” (from a previous blog Techniques In Breaking Through Mental and Emotional Barriers)
When we are in touch with our own internal thoughts and feelings, we are much closer to ourselves. Singing, chanting, humming, helps us to identify and become aware of our feelings.
“As the throat is the center of creativity, it is imperative that you give yourself permission to design your own life the way you need to live it. Experience life without guilt, retribution, or fear you are a trouble to others. Learn to accept openly and with love all that you create, including any decisions you generate. You will then be able to connect with your individuality.” Your Body Is Telling You: LOVE YOURSELF ~ Lise Bourbeau
To help bring out, and amplify your own voice, try humming, chanting, singing, writing, even digitally recording your own voice—this can help to identify and become aware of your own feelings. Wearing the color blue worn around the neck, either in a scarf, a necklace, crystals, a turtleneck etc. can help to balance the throat chakra.
“…healing the fifth chakra involves a variety of levels simultaneously, ranging from physical to mental. It includes eliminating sound pollution, giving attention to our bodies, opening the voice through toning, chanting, or singing, learning clear communication skills, and quieting ourselves enough to listen to the subtler vibrations and
messages within.” Eastern Body Western Mind ~ Anodea Smith
There are several medical intuitives and healers with similar interpretations to help us understand ourselves better. What I believe Dep Shapiro, Louise Hay and many others are saying is that the Power of the Word working through the thyroid definitely stirs up a tremendous energy in the body. Then the outflow of this power must be creative energy. But in what form? Does this mean we can consciously and deliberately activate Power, Life and Vitality through our spoken word? Do all thyroid problems center on this premise? Let’s look at some case studies and see if we can discover what really short circuits the thyroid and depletes or destroys its resources. Then we come back and answer the above question. From my observation, Hypothyroid people have a tendency to deny or “play down” their emotions – how they really feel. They want to give the appearance that everything is o.k., even when it’s not. Others can be impressed with the way the hypo person seems to bounce back from adversity as if nothing ever happened. Until they get to know the hypo person better…. Eventually their friends, family, associates realize that they have been holding all that emotion IN instead of expressing it and allowing it to leave their body.

HYPOTHYROIDISM
“I have come to believe that we create our life stories to express buried emotions. For example, if you are often disappointed, then you are probably acting out disappointment that you experienced in childhood. You need the disappointment in the present time period in order to express the old emotions.” Joan Sotkin
When I met Megan, we sat down and talked a bit about herself and her health. She’d been on her own spiritual journey for the last 10 years and felt the more she advanced in her studies the lonelier she was becoming. She also felt distanced from her own people. “My family and I don’t have that much in common anymore…it’s not that I don’t love them, I just can’t be myself with them…I don’t ‘feel at home’ anymore.”
Much of what Megan and I discussed was confidential but something she did allow me to express to you was a part of her astrological chart (natal) especially the placement of Pluto. Megan has Pluto in her 4th house and when I talked to her about the lessons and challenges of this placement she was astounded. I led her to a book called “Pluto The Evolutionary Journey of the Soul (Volume 1)” by Jeff Green. For Pluto in the 4th house, Jeff Green is quoted as saying….
“…….most individuals……will choose to be born into family situations wherein one or both parents produce a variety of emotional shocks that force the individual back in upon him or herself…..about eighty percent of Fourth House Pluto individuals have had a series of prior-life experiences in which their emotional needs have not been successfully met by one or both of their parents. They will come into this life with those unconscious memories and, in many cases will again be born into an environmental/parental situation in which their individuality and emotional needs are not recognized or met……..In varying degrees of magnitude, these individuals will have emotional problems directly linked to a feeling of not being sufficiently nurtured, appreciated or understood for who they are as individuals.” JEFF GREEN
“I always used to be a rescuer” Megan explained, “running to friends and family when they needed a shoulder to cry on….but I noticed it was a never-ending cycle of the same thing, over and over again. Trying to give others a different perspective meant dealing with the pain themselves……and some of my friends, especially family didn’t want to let go and see the truth……they just wanted to complain!”
Megan’s distress was not new to me. I’ve seen this happen to others and to myself too. It was as if we were born into a family where we didn’t belong. No matter how hard we tried to conform and meet their approval of how we should act or who we should be, it wasn’t enough. We’d suck in our emotions and feelings to keep the peace, but the more we did this the more we gave our power over to others, causing our whole bodily system to suffer.
Our aura and physical body can only hold a given amount of past experiences, once it can’t hold anymore, they must be released. If you don’t consciously release them your body will find a way — either through words, an illness, or even an accident (Just imagine all your life experiences hanging on to you for dear life – then suddenly you get hit in the head with a baseball, the sudden jolt causes some of your life experiences to go hurling into space while the others still hang on tight!)
Words are a quick and easy release. Your thoughts are energy and speaking them releases some of this energy. Megan told me she didn’t realize how stressed out she had become because she couldn’t be herself. All her emotions and feelings would well up inside her. “I could FEEL them well up in my solar plexus, come right up my throat and out of my mouth. I am totally out of control when this happens. And when it does it creates more havoc in my life. The only solution for me was to distance myself from my family….in that process I also lost those who I thought were my friends.”
Megan suffered from hypothyroidism, chronic fatigue and osteoporosis. Losing the love and respect of her family had a bearing on her skeletal system. She lacked a strong sense of backing (support) from her family……she didn’t feel safe when she was with them. She felt rejected, abandoned, hurt, angry and frustrated.
Normally when a treatment (massage, reiki, acupressure) begins the patient lies on a massage table and is able to consciously relax some of their muscles. Megan’s muscles were tight and more tense than they should have been. A muscle that is continuously tense eventually becomes painful. Wherever there is an uneven pull of muscles, our bones will suffer too. Inflammation develops in the surrounding tissue which puts stress on our bones causing them to eventually start to deteriorate. Megan was on constant alert (flight/flight response) from old patterns of threatened attacks—instead of disassociating herself, letting them go, she was absorbing it.
The body doesn’t judge an event as good or bad or appropriate….it responds to all outer stimuli from a data base (memory bank) that’s been programmed in it for its survival at the moment. Megan was, although not consciously aware of it, keeping her body in a defensive mode from events of her past. Her memory patterns were keeping her body in an up-tight survival mode rather than allowing it to respond naturally to events happening around her at the moment. Her body, mind and spirit were in a holding pattern, terrified of not knowing what to do next. She was worn out and exhausted which was taking its toll on her adrenals, immune system and her health. She was caught in the illusion of being a victim which was affecting her thyroid.
When I told Megan this, she couldn’t believe it at first. She honestly thought she had explored and healed the emotional concerns about the lack of support structures in her life. Now she realized it was HER that needed rescuing and she wasn’t sure how to go about it. I asked Megan to look at herself in a caring and nonjudgmental way—but when she tried her words became stuck in her throat and she started to cry at all her inadequacies. She couldn’t face the cruel reality she did not respect or love herself.
Some people have no problem knowing what they want from life. But for the rest of us getting in touch with our heart’s desires and having the courage to express them is often a difficult, frustrating and scary process. This is because many of us have never been taught to give to ourselves. We believe we have no right to feel or believe that what matters to us is important. We tend to focus only on the appearances and opinions of others—when this happens, we lose our power, intuition and creativity.
When we start to do deep bodywork, like Reiki, acupressure, massage, etc., we begin the process of becoming grounded in our physical body, we relax which enables us to open up to realms that were hidden within us. At first Megan feared letting go—it meant she could no longer control all the bottled up thoughts and feelings she had kept to herself. How would she cope with them emotionally, once they were uncovered? Would the heaving waters consume her?
People who are ‘cut off at the neck’ don’t like talking about anything painful. They avoid it, quickly changing the topic or minimizing the situation by saying ‘it’s not important anyway’ or ‘I don’t care anymore’. In Megan’s case, she wasn’t allowing herself to feel the hurt; instead she buried the pain inside her, shutting down her power. Unable to assert her own will, she projected it onto others—especially the underdogs.
Megan’s lower chakras were congested and constricted. To loosen this congealed energy, she allowed herself to be placed in the role as a savior to others. She attached herself to those who felt beaten down by life—those who were unable to make a connection to their visions—visions in keeping of her own. Unable to creatively express them herself, she helped others who expressed them for her.
Megan willingly poured her energy, intuition, thoughts and wisdom unto others with the hopes of being admired and recognized by her peers and her community. Instead, she often felt used. People would come to her for advice then communicate it as their own. From a sense of feeling powerful, she felt drained and powerless. She would then find herself getting angry and resentful towards others who felt bewildered by this sudden change of character and most often would abandon her. This made Megan feel she had no value which caused her to abandon herself.
“On an emotional level [the fifth chakra] this chakra governs the aspects of communication, willpower, truthfulness and creativity. . . If we cannot express ourselves through our voice to others, we can become reclusive, shy and retreating in nature. On the other side we can become loud and overly verbal that can cause us to become aggressive, overbearing and deceitful. All these problems can cloud our self expression. . . This can make us hide our true selves away from others.”
From: http://www.pharrah13.com/Chakra.html a wonderful site on the whole chakra system.
We had come full circle to the beginning where Megan said she no longer wanted to be a rescuer. Now, three weeks later, she could see she was willingly sacrificing her soul, lifeforce and integrity to find her Self in others. She was giving with the expectation of receiving and feeling loved and supported by others. As Megan looked and searched at why her expectations fell short, memories of unhealed childhood wounds began to surface.
A wonderful article worth reading is “The Way of the Wounded Healer, by Marilyn Gordon. This just might speak to you. http://www.hypnotherapycenter.com/art_two.html
Children are naturally trusting and when a parent(s) abuses that trust, we begin not to trust ourselves. We’ll go looking for other people to tell us we’re smart but no matter how many times we hear it, we probably won’t believe them—it just doesn’t coincide with our current beliefs of our self.
All this realization didn’t come through one session. It came through many. Different modes of healing, especially Reiki, help to keep the focus of attention on what’s going on right now. With Megan, she discovered the issues she was dealing with right here and what she needed to do to deal with them. She knew she had to stop giving away her power and learn how to give it to herself. When others would ask her for advice, she steered them in the right direction but she let them do the work themselves. This was hard on Megan at first because she loved helping others. Now, she was helping herself.
Megan joined a support group and now teaches some of the programs offered. All the research she compiled and did for others was all filed neatly away in her computer. Since the work was in keeping with her own passions and interests, she rewrote them to create a program and frame of reference for all to share.
Megan still needs to take thyroid medication and most probably will for the rest of her life. When she first started to heal, her thyroxin levels were spiraling up and down like a yoyo. For the past two years, they have stabilized showing us Megan has been learning to heal and balance her life. Way to go Megan!
CASE STUDY #2
HYPERTHYROIDISM
Awakening Intuition by Mona Liza Schulz has a complete chapter on ‘The Thyroid, Throat and Neck’. Check out her website http://www.drmonalisa.com/
On page 258 Mona Lisa Schulz says…..
“You might have difficulty with the emotions of the fifth chakra center if you find yourself saying things like “Where there’s a will there’s a way”. That popular old saying expresses the wilfullness that can be a hallmark of problems in this area of your life. You’re going to push through and assert your will. What about “I never have a say” or “I don’t have a voice”? Do you have trouble expressing yourself and being heard and understood? Do you often say “Oh all right, we’ll do it your way”? That’s a sign of a compliant, unassertive nature. If you find youself saying any one of these things too often, and if your body’s weak link is somewhere in the neck, you could be setting yourself up for difficulties and disease in the fifth emotional center.”
Awakening Intuition is a great book for anyone wanting to understand the mechanics of the body/mind connection. Mona Lisa Schulz has had her own challenges in healing and openly expresses her illnesses and the messages her body intuitively communicates to her. In the chapter on the thyroid, throat and neck, she openly admits to having the antibodies that indicate Graves’ Disease, “a condition in which the body produces antibodies that stimulate the thyroid action”. Although this condition is in remission Schulz openly confesses…….
“I’ve always had problems related to communication and expressing myself and advancing my heart’s desire. I’ve never wanted to wait or be compliant. All my life, my intuition has spoken to me through the organs of this center (5th chakra) about my need to assert my will and about my impatience or inability to do so. In fact I’m something of a poster child for the fifth emotional center. I’m usually swimming too much in the power column here. I have trouble with communication (especially writing, since I’m Dyslexic); I’m impatient, especially in a car on the highway……and I have a strong will and don’t like limits even if I hit tremendous walls (or trucks). Where do you fit on the scale of expressing versus listening, pushing ahead versus waiting, being willful versus complying?
Alexis (not her real name), is a 42 year old female from Orillia, Ontario. She came to the clinic while visiting a dear and supportive friend, to find healing remedies for her hyperthyroidism. The health center I worked at had weekly workshops for clients who wanted to participate. Each week would be a different discussion with different alternative healers present. This is where Alexis and I first met. During the first part of the workshop, she fidgeted about and couldn’t seem to sit still. At the first break of the night Alexis approached the Naturopath (whom I was standing beside) to book an appointment. We learned that Alexis suffered from sporadic limb movement or restless leg syndrome, high blood pressure and anxiety attacks. She had quite an assertive personality and her speech was rapid with a bit of a stammer. She was a woman with alot of mental activity.
Alexis told us she felt uncomfortable in a group setting. “My stomach feels tight, my heart’s pounds like it’s in my throat and I’ve noticed that at times I hold my breath.” It had taken a lot of courage for her to come with her friend tonight. I could feel Alexis’ aura was charged with a what felt like high voltage electrical circuit. She was like a simmering volcano ready to explode at any moment. Alexis also told us she was premenopausal—her moods she said “quickly soared up and then as quickly plummeted down ”. She was in the winds of hormonal changes. “I know, Alexis said, “I have a really bad temper and if someone just happens to push my buttons I will swear and verbally attack them. In rare instances I have physically attacked someone.”
Alexis was willing to try anything to relieve her intolerable sense of frustration. In desperation she turned to alternative healing as a last resort. She wanted to take responsibility and change her life.
“Hyperthyroidism (overactive thyroid) Constant rushing, trying to pack as much as possible into the day. Inability to organize yourself. Under pressure and stress to achieve. Never enough time. Feeling that if you don’t get things done, the world will collapse. Constant guilt about not doing more. Always there for everyone except yourself.” THE SECRET LANGUAGE OF YOUR BODY: The Essential Guide to Health and Wellness ~ Inna Segal
The second half of the workshop was on communication and what it is that keeps us from getting through to each other. The guest speaker that night told us the problem stemmed from two sources…..1) being human and 2) forgetting that others are human too. Robots we were told have no emotions no secrets or pre-existing attitudes to distract them. They accept ideas without question and put them into action. Humans on the other hand get annoyed at little things that get in their way, worry too much or feel others cannot be trusted. We either fly off the handle or repress our feelings. Anger is a natural human emotion. So how do we find ways of expressing it constructively and honestly?
In the next section of this blog we’ll learn more about the Throat or 5th chakra known as the creative centre and its affiliation to the the sense of hearing/listening as well as the spoken word. Everyone knows a healthy relationship is one where we feel safe to express anything. To form a relationship of this kind, first we need to form a friendly loving relationship with ourselves.

Thank you for your kind words Wendy ❤
[…] When ‘some’ women hit the perimenopausal and menopausal years their thyroid’s energy production for some reason slows down. When the thyroid becomes sluggish, so too does our metabolism and energy, resulting in many different symptoms such as fatigue, poor digestion, constipation, depression, muscle aches, heart palpitations, forgetfulness, dry skin, etc. This happened to myself, even though I ate well and exercised regularly, I really felt down in the dumps and constantly tired. As well, I was having heart palpitations that not only drove me crazy, they frightened and exhausted me. I actually wrote about my story in an article on my blog https://ravenstarshealingroom.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/zooming-in-on-the-thyroid/ Also take a look at https://ravenstarshealingroom.wordpress.com/2009/07/11/emotionally-psychologically-and-spiritually-de… […]
Great article. Thanks
Thanks Valerie 🙂 I am always appreciative of receiving feedback. Have a great Sunday!! xoxo
Great information. Do you know anything about the spiritual/energetic aspects of Hashimoto’s?
Good morning leowfactor,
What a wonderful question, thank you. 🙂
Hashimoto’s is a form of hypothyroidism,(actually see-saws between hypo and hyperthyroidism) an autoimmune disease that attacks, enlarges and could destroy the thyroid. Spiritually and energetically Hashimoto’s involves the 1st and 5th chakra and has to do with our ability to stand up (speak) for ourselves and our convictions. We might feel the person listening may not understand what we are going to say and so we either don’t say anything and follow their advice or we express something totally different from what we originally felt, confusing ourselves and the other person. OR we search and find the words we know the other person wants to hear which undervalues ourself. This creates a split between the body and mind, resulting in physical tension and emotional frustration because we can’t seem to express what we are feeling.
I think that people with Hashimoto’s need to ‘bridge the gap’ between feeling and expressing. To do that they need to be aware of their internal communication process that seems to undermine their self-worth and what their feeling. They need to stop denying their power and use the “I” to get recognized as well as getting what they want. To me, Hashimoto people need to develop a strong identity so they won’t be manipulated by others.
“Until today, you may have considered someone or something more important than you. You may have pushed yourself to take care of people and things, believing they were valuable and important aspects of your life. Just for today, and again tomorrow, make yourself the most important and valuable aspect of your life. In other words, for the next two days, think of you, do for you, take care of you first.” Until Today ~ Iyanla Vanzant
I’d love your feedback!
Thank you again leowfactor

I guess we receive what we need when we need it, I have just been diagnosed with hashi’s, so your post was interesting. Thank you.
You’re welcome. Awareness of any illness begins the healing process of tapping into and connecting with our own inner rhythms. Although it can, at times be a slow process…it can, at the same time, be very fulfilling and empowering. Wish you well on your journey ❤
Thank you. That was very eye opening. I totally relate. I will try the challenge for 2 days.
That’s awesome Sandra! For those 2 precious days pamper yourself! Love yourself! Get to know yourself better, more fully and in new and different ways.♥ Why not take 2 days out of every month to be totally there for you! ♥

(Removed question due to Spam) acid reflux may be caused by poor muscle tone and that poor muscle tone could be caused by a thyroid problem. It’s always a good idea to have the thyroid checked as it can easily upset the body’s endocrine system. All it takes is a simple blood test.
great post…offers such valuable information and amazing insight!
I for all time emailed this web site post page to all my contacts, because if like to read it then my friends will too.
I’ve a 2cm lump in my thyroid and at the same time a lump on my vocal chord. Both have to be removed under ga in the coming weeks (I’m waiting for my appointment) and biopsied for any malignancy. A friend of mine is a homeopath and is convinced these lumps are due to the reasons mentioned in your article. I have been tested for an over/under active thyroid and those results were clear, so the lump isn’t a goitre.
My question to you is how do I go about assessing what communication/area of communication I need to work on? I’m overall quite good at communicating my thoughts and feelings…can you recommend what I could do or who I could see to help me?
Hi Dee,
I first must apologize for the length of this message lol!
The thyroid is an endocrine gland functioning as a central command post, sending hormonal messages to every cell in the body. It maintains the heart rate, muscle contractions, and the rate at which food is turned into energy (metabolism). Did you also read Zooming in on the Thyroid? This article may help you understand the many symptoms of Hypo/hyperthyroidism. Also the Endocrine Glands Part II may help too. 🙂
Thyroid tests have been known to come back normal, yet the patient shows signs of hyper/hypothyroidism, so these tests can be inconclusive. Did your doctor perform more than one test? Sometimes thyroid problems can be caused by other glands, like the hypothalamus/pituitary or malfunction of the adrenal glands. Sometimes nodules or lumps on the thyroid stimulate hormone productions of their own and this could also show normal thyroid function in the blood. To reassure you, most thyroid lumps are benign and easily treated.
At home, you could try the basal thermometer which should be available at your local drug store. The old mercury ones are the most accurate rather than the digital ones. All you have to do is bring the thermometer to bed (for 3 consecutive days) with you and soon as you awaken, before even getting up, place the thermometer under your armpit for about 10 minutes. Just relax and imagine yourself walking on a beach at sunset or a happy place you’d like to be. After 10 minutes, remove the thermometer; a temperature reading below 97.6 could indicate hypothyroidism. If this is the case, by all means contact your doctor.
Right now, we don’t have clue if your throat problems are due to experiences related to thyroid area. If interested, I highly recommend seeing a Reiki practitioner or alternative healer. Reiki hand placements, help to energize all the endocrine glands and meridian points, so the body can relax and begin the process of healing. You can most definitely meet with the healer beforehand to make sure you feel comfortable and at ease with them. In most cases, healers are able to detect if there is congestion or a hindrance of energy in the body; they should by all means let you know what areas are deficient or excessive in energy. This in itself helps a person begin their own self-healing.
If you’d like to talk more privately, you could email me at ravenstarshealingroom@gmail.com . It’s very difficult to pinpoint what may have started your thyroid/vocal chord problem. The body is basically the sum of all your memories, habits, how you think, feel and believe in this world. Most of the time we aren’t aware of the many thoughts that barrage our minds. Our thoughts are made of our beliefs, our experiences, feelings, fears, hopes, and motivations…they can control our mind and feelings to the detriment of our health.
To help understand the symbolic causes of thyroid problems, I recently created a questionnaire for each of the chakras of the body. The one below is for the throat center and still quite a draft. Each question asked has a scale of 1 to 3 (1, excellent; 2, good; 3 poor) and should be answered without much thinking, allowing your intuition to guide you. Always trust your first response and don’t go back to change an answer.
Once completed, look it over and see what areas (especially good or poor) could use improvement. Even better, show it to your homeopathic friend. Sometimes others are more objective and can honestly show us where we excel and/or lack energy in. From there you can focus your attention and energy on healing.
ASSESSING THE THROAT CHAKRA
Answer each question with 1, excellent; 2, good; 3, poor
1. I communicate my ideas clearly.
2. I easily express how I feel
3. I deal with conflict as soon as it arises

5. I communicate my concerns without blaming.

7. My speech is always clear
8. I communicate compassionate love
9. My language reflects my Love of Self.
10. My language reflects my Love of others.
11. My words are congruent with my behavior.
12. I am comfortable with Silence.

First off, thank you so much for your detailed and thoughtful response. Having gone through your questionnaire I can see some areas I do have communication problems.
I’m off to buy myself a thermometer and read the recommended article and I’ll email you with a progress report.
Thanks again, I appreciate the time you put in to responding to my problems…i’m feeling a bit lost in the conventional medicine bubble!

I have Graves’ disease / hyperthyroid
I’m over achiever and experienced death of a friend and our dog
Work has been very hard lately
I’m struggling to achieve health
Appreciate any guidance
Dear Sharon,
I’m so sorry you’ve lost not only a dear friend but a beloved pet as well. I cannot imagine the pain you’re going through, My deepest condolences. ♥
Our emotions can feel overwhelming and sometimes frightening after the initial shock of hearing your best friend(s) has passed on to the light. It can shake us to our inner core, even when we know they are at peace and in a place of love. After the initial shock, a chain reaction of emotions can suddenly let loose and we feel as if our boat has capsized and we are being swept downstream. I will not tell you to deny the heartache you feel because you need to feel it. The throat chakra is an expression of what we know and feel. At this time, there is no rush to deny your pain, don’t restrict what you’re feeling, the outward flow of emotions will eventually balance themselves out.
When you are ready, take a few deep breaths and tune into your inner guidance. Blue, the color of the throat chakra brings you peace, contentment, tranquility and tenderness. It cools, pacifies and helps the healing process, relaxing your nerves and building your vitality. Take the time to listen to the voice of your intuition and if it feels right, talk or write down what you wish to say to your loved ones, allow all your feelings to come to the surface. They will hear or see what you’ve written. You could even sing a song or hum a tune that brings pleasant memories of the good times you had together. When you’ve finished you can burn the letter or save it somewhere safe.
In regard to your work
Work is supposed to be an expression of our energy, our bodies, our minds, our hearts, our souls and our creative potential. I’m not sure what type of job you have or the stresses involved there….I think that if we were to discuss this more, we should do so more privately, through email.
Our need to do, to succeed and to accomplish is an expression or our deepest need to feel accepted. Some people I know with Graves could be classed as perfectionists. And in this frantic, high-pressured world people like yourself are always moving forward with the gears on overdrive.
If you are a perfectionist, then all I ask is you become more conscious of ‘your’ expectations, lift the pressure of those self-imposed deadlines and plan realistically. Focus more on the moment to moment process of what you’re doing and not on the end result, which will take care of itself. Look at your work as how you can help others. As you do something repetitious or routine, imagine the satisfaction and pleasure when the person receives the work you’ve done. These effects can create profound changes towards your attitudes of work.
Are you on medication for your thyroid condition? Is it working for you? If so, breathing exercises shouldn’t be a problem as you get into the flow. If it’s not then you need to see your doctor. Long term stress (adrenal burnout) can be damaging to the body. The endocrine glands are incredibly complex and entwined with each other, if one is off balance, then the others will feel the imbalance as well.
There are certain foods termed as “goitrogens” that slow down the thyroid function and SHOULD NOT BE taken by people with a LOW thyroid function or HYPOthyroid. But for HYPERthyroid these foods may help you in the interim. As far as I know they need to be eaten raw or uncooked.
Raw foods that LOWER thyroid function are….
Broccoli
Brussel sprouts
Cabbage (as already said by Caroline)
Cauliflower
Kale
Kolrhabi
Mustard Greens
Rutabagas
Turnips
peanuts
peaches
pears
radishes
strawberries
millet
spinach
soybeans (tofu, soy sauce, soy milk etc)
Also the herb called Lemon Balm is supposed to be good in reducing thyroid hormone levels as well as reduce stress. 🙂
If there’s more you’d like to discuss, please email me 🙂
Hugs,
xoxo

so thank you again

Hi Naomi,
Thank you for your comment. Most people don’t realize how wildly a woman’s hormones fluctuate after having a child (especially with a toddler too). We become extra-sensitive to stress making whatever reserves we have left, even harder to cope. What many people don’t realize is that a housewife and mother is tied to their place of work 24 hours a day and can’t leave it behind at 5 o’clock.
From the sounds of it, you’re listening to your body’s rhythms and treating them accordingly. That’s wonderful. I hope you do find some time for yourself, even a walk around the block can boost your body’s serotonin levels, known as the ‘happy chemical’ in the brain. Evening Primose Oil and Omega 3 may help too.
To be continued….I’m sorry this confused you, it was my way of saying the blog itself would continue with new articles. I’ll remove it so as not to confuse other readers, thank you for putting this to my attention. 🙂

thank you for this post. I enjoyed it a lot. You have a gift for writing. I started reading the book about Pluto, after I was prompted to look at my chart yesterday.
A lot of beautiful powerful ideas that are transformative and helpful.
Another thing that I enjoyed particularly about this write up is that I got to “feel” through the feelers of the Reiki Healer. Very cool, it shifted my perspective a lot about how truly sensitive some healers are.

I have read several just right stuff here. Definitely price bookmarking for revisiting.
I wonder how much effort you put to create anyy such excellent informative website.
Thank you so deeply for this article. So much hit home with me. I have been diagnosed with full blown Hashimotos with four lumps of signifigant size that the doctor fears are cancer due to the way they had grown between ultrasounds. I grew up feeling unloved by a parent & that I always had to “gain” his approval to be loved. I was outcast & ridiculed by my sisters & others & have spent much of my life trying to gain others approval & love. I never feel that I can be myself & always fear that once someone gets to know me that they will reject me as well. I work nonstop until I drop, always putting others first & never taking time for myself.
What is the best way to release these past hurts & move forward to spiritual & physical healing? Thank you for any help in this.
Hi Marsha,
I really wish doctors wouldn’t scare the daylights out of their patients before all the tests come back! A lot of what they do is so inhumane. It’s ‘possible’ those lumps are part of your lymphatic system. Did he or she mention that?
Do you still have your tonsils? These spongy tissues are at the back of the throat on either side and there is also the adenoids which are found at the back of the nose. Similar tissue (lymph nodes) are also found at the back of the tongue and scattered over the walls of the throat .. these are part of the lymphatic system.
Are you seeing a specialist and are they going to aspirate (remove fluid from) the lumps in your thyroid area? This will check to see if there are thyroid antibodies in the cyst. If not, then it’s quite possible your lymph nodes are swollen. A swollen lymph node can be large and hard or small and pea-like .. and means there is some kind of inflammation in the body.
I get the sense you are incredibly empathic and highly sensitive. Most ‘people-pleasers’ are very kind, warm and generous, yet underneath they struggle with feelings of unworthiness. As a ‘workaholic’ you’re always trying to improve yourself in order to get ‘love’.
The first step in any healing (which you’ve already done) is asking yourself, where you are right now. “Where am I now” always determines your next move and it anchors or grounds your energy.
The 2nd step is to accept (freely and uncritically) where you are at this moment. This allows your unconscious to release more knowledge about itself and to set goals for yourself.
The 3rd step is to learn the language of your body. Most of us aren’t aware that it’s talking to us all the time, sending clues and messages through its symptoms. Symptoms really are metaphors for what’s going on internally .. on an emotional and energetic level.
(Auto-immune dis-eases and cancer don’t just manifest overnight. You usually have to go back about 7 to 10 years to look at what, emotionally, traumatically, was going on then)
If you know how to meditate, relax, take a few breaths, and allow to feel the aches and pains in your body. zero-in on your thyroid. Pretend this gland is an entity and has its own personality. Through visualization, it may show itself to you as a person, or an animal and it may be ‘angry’ or feeling ‘unloved’ you hadn’t noticed it before.
However, you visualize your thyroid, let it talk, rant and rave all it wants. Once it gets through feeling rejected and abandoned, by you, it will begin to share what it needs to heal.
**
THE WORKAHOLIC
Being a ‘workaholic’ most likely means you have difficulty getting into the realm of your feelings. Which also means you don’t like to get into ‘deep emotional waters’. But this also distracts you from having an intimate relationship as you’re forever, elsewhere involved. Also, with all your hustling and bustling, how many people have you unconsciously abandoned?
At a metaphysical level, most workaholics, suffer from their childhood a sense of ’emotional abandonment’. Unable to process or deal with it, they remain stuck in ‘unresolved grief’. Also, being an outcast and ridiculed by your siblings, you realized that if you kept moving, you could ignore your feelings. But no matter what a workaholic accomplishes in the outside world, they don’t really have a sense of what their feeling .. until they get sick. Then they start questioning what they’re doing to themselves.
Can you take a day off of work, or two? This may help you to see that all your busyness is an addiction and it might create feelings of great tension. It’s very similar to quitting smoking, where you go through a ‘withdrawal’ phase … this discomfort is natural .. try your best to stay with it.
And learn to speak lovingly to your body, let it know you’re trying hard to understand what it’s trying to tell you. Breathe with your body and send compassion to it.
This whole process loving your body is teaching it to give up its hold on old, habit patterns.
If you’re interested Marsha, I can give you some meditations/visualizations .. if you email me at ravenstarshealingroom@gmail.com
Hugs and Blessings,
ravenstar
I came across the article while searching for answers about my hyper/hypo thyroid condition. I initially suffered with Graves disease and now am experiencing hypothyroid symptoms. After being diagnosed with Graves I tried unsuccessfully to find the answer to why I was experiencing this condition in my life at this time, as I had been in recovery from Stage 1 breast cancer prior to the Graves. The condition has had such an affect on everything that I want to get to the root of the condition and find healing. The article helped me see how I have developed this condition and now I am look for ways to heal from this condition and live my best life with my best self. Any direction or information you can provide me to help me on this journey is greatly appreciated.
Light and Love..
Tamiko
Hi Tamiko,
I’m so glad they caught your cancer early and you are healing ♥. Once diagnosed, did you receive chemo-treatments? The reason I ask is because chemotherapy could cause the immune system to go erratic, which in turn could affect the performance of the thyroid. The thyroid changes in part by cytokines and the inflammatory response, so it’s possible you’re hypo (now) because the thyroid, which is the body’s gas pedal, is literally exhausted. Your doctor should check your thyroid every 3 – 6 months, as your body’s energy balances itself, the thyroid may change again.
I’d also look up the metaphysics of breast cancer as it may be the precursor to your thyroid problems. The breast is a potent symbol of nourishment and protection, of comfort and reassurance. Breast cancer is intimately connected to our feelings, our femininity, our sense of self-worth and our ability to express ourselves as women. Sometimes there may be a stressful relationship with the mother causing a child to suppress her feelings out of fear of criticism. Breast cancer can be caused from feeling drained from giving freely of herself and not receiving a hug, a kiss or anything in return.
The first thing I’d like to do, when working with thyroid clients is to help them become reacquainted with their Inner Child. If you email me, I’ll send you the Inner Child meditation/visualization I’ve given clients to work with. I also ask clients to pay attention and write down ‘what they’re thinking’ and what their thoughts are saying. Identify any images, physical feelings that are present.
The second thing is ‘evaluate your inner talk. Are you listening to your anxious chatter or your Inner Guide. If you find that you are tuned into your anxious thought, What is it saying to you? How are you really feeling emotionally? Where is the anxiety in your body? What is it doing? Which thoughts are making me anxious? What does my Inner Guide have to say about this?
The third thing you can do is change your negative inner talk into positive inner talk. Keep repeating your new positive inner talk until you feel a change. A make sure these positive talks are prepared by you. A good question to ask is: What would I rather be hearing right now.
The fourth thing is, congratulate yourself for dealing with anxiety in a more creative way. Don’t wait for perfection; praise any improvement you’ve made. And thank anxiety for guiding you in the direction of growth. Reward yourself for accomplishment and appreciation, relaxation and pleasure. Deepen your capacity for unconditional love for yourself and others.
The fifth thing, meditation/visualization are very helpful in raising your energy vibrations higher, and making you feel better about yourself. As well, your Higher Self, and/or Inner Guides will speak to more clearly and send you images, pictures, symbols, etc. to help you move closer to your authentic self.
All this doesn’t happen overnight, it takes time to look at ourselves squarely and really wanting to change. People who heal fully and quickly have two big things on their side: their attitude and focus. If you combine these attributes with a strong determination to fully recover, you will discover you have a tremendous capacity to direct and control your own healing. When you direct specific body parts to relax, you increase your blood flow and improve circulation to those parts and improve tissue regeneration and promote faster healing. By imaging the healing process happening in your body, you use your mind to program your body to heal more effectively. Through images and thoughts you communicate with your body: you tell it what you want it to do. And your body responds accordingly. It follows your mind’s directives in healing just as it does in performing other skills.
While you’re working with all the above, discover your passions. Passion comes from doing what we love and loving what we do. Worthy goals originate from childlike qualities, which explains why it’s important to get to know your Inner Child.
a) pursue what is most important to you;
b) focus on your strengths rather than your weaknesses, which will restore faith in your own capacity;
c) simplify your life;
d) do more things you love to do and fewer things you hate to do; this will give you more positive energy;
e) save some of your best energy for your favorite people and activities;
f) allow yourself to flow around obstacles. Don’t assume responsibility for the obstacle but take control of how you navigate through it.
g) remind yourself of your original dreams and your reasons for doing what you are doing;
h) balance your load so you feel more freshed and more able to embrace the people and pursuits you love;
i) feel magic moments in whatever you do .. open your heart and embrace them
j grow from every opportunity. Thank the antagonists in your life for teaching you and remind yourself, you will never let people like that control your life again.
I wish you well on your healing journey Tamiko.
Love and Hugs,

Reading this actually made me break down in tears to the realization that I have been unable to be my true self and have struggled with this problem for as long as I can remember.
Thank You for this
Hi Jordan,
Tears cleanse and realign the power to your soul. ♥
Many times we suppress our own needs and feelings to avoid drama and keep the peace. However, not being assertive and not setting boundaries or speaking up for yourself will take its tole on your body.
Now you are starting a new life, 🙂 committed to setting firm boundaries and clear on your intentions.
Think of it this way….just before spring arrives, nature can’t quite make up her mind and we go through a period of gusty winds and pelting rain. As the shift to spring finally is here, you begin to feel spring’s uprising energy within you it’s like waking up after a long rest, stretching out your arms and feeling your body come alive.
All the mystics tell us, and I too believe, that when it comes to spirituality it is an independent journey. One in which we must find ourselves and our relationship with the Divine. And this begins by giving yourself permission to be who you are right now, right this minute …. you are full and perfect as you are 🙂
Blessings to you and your healing journey, Jordan ♥

Good day, I have had hypo for many years now, my mom also had it. Have recently taken to doing Qi gong which has helped a lot with breathing and connecting to myself again. Reading through your blog and all the comments really motivates me to understand myself and to be gentle with myself as I take notice of my body and thoughts. The one thing that does confuse me is the foods to eat. I have been having raw spinach in a smoothie most days and eat quite a few others things on your list. Are you saying that we must cook these and only eat in moderation or that we can eat them raw in moderation. Thanks for this most amazing article on thyroid
Hi Maggie,
Thank you very much for your kind comment regarding this blog 🙂
Qi Chong and other modes of healing are incredible for interacting with the meridian system, chakras and endocrine system (chemical messengers in the body) It’s never as people say “all in your head”. The thought that you have right now, whatever it is, is vital to all parts of you and exists all through you and around you.
You’re doing really well Maggie, looking for health and equilibrium that is unique for “you”.
Spinach in moderation won’t harm you, and is quite good for you. It’s becomes a problem when you eat too much, as it can interfere with iron and calcium absorption by forming compounds that our bodies can’t use and must excrete.
In regards with the foods you eat, we all should eat ‘raw vegetables’ in moderation when suffering from low thyroid. The symptoms of hypothyroid are perceived as a deficiency of Qi and yang. The sign of a Qi and yang deficiency that attributes to hypothyroid are: fatigue, cold hands and feet, brittle nails, loss of hair, and easy weight gain. Because the thyroid stimulates digestion, hypothyroidism impairs digestion which can possibly cause chronic constipation. It can also lead to edema and bloating due to retained water, salt and protein, causing the body to feel puffy and heavy.
(In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) the Chinese believe that cooked food requires less energy to turn into fuel and thereby energizes the thyroid. Warm food also benefits the stomach and entire digestive system by helping maintain the flow of energy. Cold food causes energy to slow down or some cases ‘stuck’ resulting in digestive problems.)
Ginger is one of the best herbs for yang deficiency. You can use ginger as a tea or as a flavoring in your food to nourish your digestive system and warm up your entire body. In traditional Chinese medicine, Qi and yang deficiencies are also treated with combinations of herbs. Zinc (found in a good multi-vitamin) helps with the production of T3 and it has been shown that when zinc levels are low, so is T3 production. You an find good sources of zinc in …. ginger, dairy foods, nuts, green vegetables, cooked turkey, beef, fish, and whole grains.
According to the Five Element system, Earth types have the strongest tendency to develop hypothyroidism. I’m not sure if you’re an Earth type, but if you are, then you have great empathy and compassion for people and a kindly disposition (you’ll cook cookies for all your neighbors). The Earth element rules the spleen and the stomach, the two organs responsible for making Blood, which is critical to healthy thyroid function. When the spleen and stomach aren’t able to make enough Blood, Qi and yang deficiency can result. One reason women develop hypothyroidism is that they have a tendency to become blood-deficient. This is because Blood can be depleted during menstruation, pregnancy and lactation. Women can also become Blood-deficient if they eat an excess of foods that impair spleen Qi and stomach Qi (these include sugar, white bread, pasta, cold, and uncooked foods). In addition, a stressful lifestyle that causes anxiety, tension and anger affects the liver Qi, which in turn can further deplete the spleen and stomach Qi.

You’re most welcome Maggie! ♥
Beautiful resource on the power of the thyroid. Thank you!
Thank you WisdomRx ♥
Hi, Raven Star!
This is an incredible source of information, I have learned so much, thank you!
I am slightly hypo and have struggled physically for the past 4 years. I have a thyroid nodule on the right-hand side 5*5*7 cm. It has been steadily growing over the past 20 years or longer but shown an increased growth in the last 2-4 years. In the last 4 years, I have started getting a recurring (and rather painful) sore throat and ear and eventually nasal channel on the right, whenever I get overly cooled, like swimming or winter season. I now have a very quiet voice. Have to clear my throat. Breathing is with a sound…
I am a yoga teacher and have practiced 5 elements and energies, but only yesterday it has been brought to my attention that it might be the issues with communication. I always thought I am quite clear with voicing out, apparently, I am shy, feeling unworthy, not confident, worried to say the truth and how it is going to be accepted by others, saying sorry for things where not needed, indecisiveness.
I tried to sing mantras all day yesterday and it somewhat helped to get my voice louder.
Question 1:
I think all I am most of all trying to identify is the ‘root’ cause of my throat issues. When I was 16, my mom nearly killed herself and after surviving, she has divorced my dad, and we moved to live in another country. This could be the one but how to know for sure and how to release it! I’ve been practicing forgiveness affirmations and stuff, but I am not sure if I can release it. I am in a good relationship with my dad, but I nearly can’t talk to my mum. I even try to avoid calling her and leave 10,000 km’s away. 🙂 Every time we have a phone call she would try to ‘stuff’ me up with her ideas and if I argue or disagree in any way she takes it as an offense…Could the problem lie here? And who to ask for help, I don’t know how to talk to her, she has a very closed mind and chooses to only see what she wants to see.
Another ‘root’ cause could be that my dad didn’t want me when mum got pregnant, and he has never been a good father but has always loved me.
I also had a physical damage to my throat at 20, when I played sports.
Somebody has suggested a hypnosis session so that I could get to the root cause, do you know if this could be effective?
Question 2: that I have is how to identify whether the nodule and my ‘soar’ throat things are related and how to find out what that recurring thing is and the best treatment for it. I’ve been all around natural/healers and integrative doctors in our city for the past 4 years and still have no answer. It reoccurs to me at least twice a year and lasts for 6 weeks to clear.
Question 3: what would be the best way to start treatment of the nodule from the metaphysical point of view? I am aware of the diet and currently take thyroid support with zinc and iodine as well as iron, maca root, and a few others. I have always been extremely low on iron, and I am now reading this is related to a spleen…how to boost the absorption…neutering the spleen through the diet is what I was going to do next.
I had to close down my business recently. Have a look https://healthymeyoga.com.au/ and had to transition all of my classes to a nearby studio. I am now trying to get less stress and focus more on myself. 🙂
Can I please also request your inner child meditation, I find that I somewhat struggle to be a child, and unwind.
My post is extremely lengthy, hope it is OK for you? Let me know if we should arrange a consult instead. 🙂
Thank you!
Hi Lana,
I would prefer (for your own privacy) to continue this conversation by email. If you agree, would you email me at ravenstarshealingroom@gmail.com . I’ll also be able to send the requested meditation you asked for. ♥

Metaphysical Cause of Thyroid Nodules
The thyroid provides strength to the digestive tract, the arms, the throat, jaws, neck, and the upper arms. It symbolizes self-expression, reflection, and self examination, often interpreted as hearing one’s inner voice, it calms, lowers blood pressure and decreases respiration. It enhances communication and decision-making.
“Benign thyroid tumor refers to various types of tumors besides thyroid carcinoma, including thyroid adenoma, thyroid cyst, toxic adenoma and nodular goiter. It is marked by nodules in the neck, and in severe cases, an oppressive sensation in the neck or even un-smooth respiration and hoarse voice. Thyroid adenoma may afflict people of any age, especially females. It has a relative slow onset and in some cases the thyroid adenoma may retrogress into thyroid cyst, turn into thyroid toxic adenoma or even progress into maligant tumor.” World Century Compendium to TCM: A 7-Volume set by Xiang Xia, Xiao-heng Shen, Min CHen, Yanqian Xiao
Metaphysically thyroid nodules are caused by mental anguish, excessive worrying, over-analyzing and anger. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), this can lead to the dysfunction of the liver and spleen meridian. Liver-wood over-restricts the spleen-earth, bringing about the dysfunction of the spleen causing mental depression, anger, sighing/groaning, distended pain in the chest and bloating in stomach and abdomen. This may also affect the lung/intestine meridians causing symptoms similar to Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS).
Also, if the spleen is restricted, it will affect the kidneys (water) because the Spleen (Earth) controls the metabolism of Water (transforming and transporting function) to prevent edema. So as we can see, the thyroid is extremely important in the balance of the endocrine glands and most of the inner-functions of the body.
I’ve noticed that a majority of people with thyroid nodules have a condition called Hashimoto’s thyroiditis. People with this dis-ease complain of being exhausted yet feel as if they’re stuck in high gear. It’s kind of like a car stuck in neutral with its engine racing but not going anywhere. Physically this stuckness can cause knots (emotionally overwrought thoughts and feelings) to accumulate in the thyroid area.
One way to untie theses knots is to be brutally honest with yourself (journal writing is excellent for this). As well, acknowledge your fears and self-doubts and any defeating beliefs that are holding you back. This way you’ll gain power over your false fears and move closer to eliminating them.
Self-criticism is often connected to traumatic or abusive past experiences, which you’ve had your fair-share of. This could cause difficulty feeling positive about yourself and being able to have a happy, healthy relationship with others. You are eager to please and be liked by others but your feelings get hurt very easily. Having been so misunderstood and unappreciated as a child, you haven’t yet learned to open up emotionally.
You felt that the way to be loved was to repress your own needs and attend to the needs of others. You put other people’s needs ahead of your own; you feel you must give in order to get; and you feel you must earn a place in the affections of others because you believe, love doesn’t come easily to you. On a deep psychological level, you are trying to fix in others the hurts you are unable to full acknowledge in yourself.
To fully express ‘who you are’ is to express your truth. The problem is, when you want approval from others, you will say what they want to hear….or afraid of what others might think of you, you will hold or swallow our words back. When we swallow our words, our voices sound whiny, we speak in whispers or we tend to mumble.
Anytime we come away from feeling used or abused .. of not having to stood up for ourselves and what we believe in, we come away feeling resentful and angry for losing respect for ourselves. The body hearing our self talk, loses its immunity to care for itself and becomes sick.
“Take a little time to listen to the words you say. If you hear yourself saying something three times, write it down. It has become a pattern for you. At the end of a week, look at the list you’ve made and you’ll see how your words fit your experiences. Be willing to change your words and thoughts and watch your life change. The way to control your life is to control your choice of words and thoughts. No one thinks in your mind but you.” Heal Your Body ~ Louise Hay
Whenever you become aware of your body and its position, you immediately experience relaxation and a flow of energy because you are listening to it more closely than before. Also focusing on the breath at your belly is very calming. What you’re doing is tuning into the region of the body that is below all your worrying thoughts and bringing the mind into relaxation, calmness and stability. ♥♥♥

Sir, I need guidance that how should I deal with my hypothyroidism.
Year back I started with alopecia arreata then I developed a very bad cystic acne and then severe weightloss and finally after getting treated for all conditions I got with no results I got diagnosed with hypothyroidism TSH 9 mIU . I have not lived a good life. I am 25 years old male. Please guide me in terms of healing meditation.
Hi Rohit,
To fully express ‘who you are’ and begin the healing process of your thyroid is to express your truth. We tend to undermine that when we want approval from others, we will say what they want to hear….or afraid of what others might think of us, we will hold or swallow our words back. When we swallow our words, our voices sound whiny, we speak in whispers or we stutter or tend to mumble.
Anytime you come away from feeling used or abused .. of not having to stood up for yourself and what you believe in, you come away feeling resentful and angry for losing respect for yourself. The body hearing your self talk, loses its immunity to care for itself and becomes sick.
The throat chakra is our most vulnerable area of all our energy centers and may be your weakest link in the body. This means that the throat area may be more vulnerable than all the others and becomes the main target when feeling anxious or stressed. This area of the body has very little protection and is sensitive to all types of ‘weather’. Many children and people tend to tuck their chins over their throat or hold their head down from being afraid to openly express themselves.
The thyroid resonates with the energy of our vitality, it reflects our inner state and how we feel about the world around us. When we don’t feel our thoughts/feelings matter, we fail to speak out for ourselves and become dependent on others … this suppresses who we are. When this happens it keeps us from our expressing and communicating with others, because we fear being judged, rejected, humiliated, etc.. Eventually we choke on our feelings and suffer major thyroid dysfunctions.
Both Cystic Acne and Alopecia Arreata are autoimmune disorders and most likely were caused from your hypothyroidism. Usually when hypothyroidism or any other thyroid disorder begins in the physical body, it cannot be detected by a blood test. So everything ‘appears’ normal, though all symptoms are there. As the thyroid struggles to balance itself, the TSH levels start to elevate. Doctors seeing the change in your TSH output will monitor your thyroid by taking a blood test every three or 6 months. Even if an individual is losing their hair, fatigued and suffering muscle aches and pains, medical doctors will wait for the TSH levels to hit 100 or higher before medicating. Once a person is given levothyroxine or some other thyroid treatment, they start feeling better in a couple of days.
What can you do to heal your thyroid? Look on the internet or go to a health store and ask them about Iodine. The thyroid is dependent on iodine to produce iodine-containing hormones, thyroxine and triiodothyronine (T3). The thyroid normally contains between 3 and 20 mg of iodine, sometimes even more. Lugol’s solution is one of many iodine products on the market. I highly recommend it.
Avoid raw foods that contain goitrogens (substances that interfere with the thyroid’s iodine uptake). (e.g., soybeans, peanuts, pine nuts, millet, and vegetables such as cabbage, greens, turnips radishes. Cooking these foods destroys the goitrogens.
Eat whole-foods, such as plant foods (fruits, legumes, vegetables, whole grains) and coldwater fish. A good high-quality multivitamin with minerals, such as Vitamin A, B2, B3, B6, and C, and zinc, selenium, iron and copper
Meditation/Visualization
Wayne Dyer says “encourage yourself with thoughts such as “I’m fed up with being frightened, shy, poor, unhappy, used by others, condescending, [thin], or out of shape…So whatever you believe is your nature, allow it to be nurtured the way you’d like it to be, starting with Excuses Begone!” Excuses Begone ~ by Wayne Dyer
AND Louise Hay…
“Take a little time to listen to the words you say. If you hear yourself saying something three times, write it down. It has become a pattern for you. At the end of a week, look at the list you’ve made and you’ll see how your words fit your experiences. Be willing to change your words and thoughts and watch your life change. The way to control your life is to control your choice of words and thoughts. No one thinks in your mind but you.” Heal Your Body ~ Louise Hay
Healing begins with the positive belief that you can be healed. Stay open to your own unique ways of positively expressing your emotions. Keep breathing and allowing the Light to enter the wound – to ultimately heal the wound. Yet know that to fully heal takes time, it takes self-care, and self-love. Make some space every day to hold your heart in Light, to allow yourself to grieve and heal. And don’t let anyone tell you how to do it or that it needs to be under the time-table of another.
Breathe deep and relax.
Breathe deeply and relax. For 3 minutes each hour take a short mental vacation. Practice the following breathing exercise to relax your body and mind. You can engage in this exercise while you are standing in the checkout line at the supermarket or when listening to others talking on a telephone. You can complete the exercise at home or at work. Take three deep breathes and relax. As you inhale, concentrate on calm and peaceful thoughts. You may think about relaxing by a mountain, by the ocean or comfortably in your favourite room at home. As you exhale, concentrate on pushing any tension out of your lungs. Focus on positive images in your life. Focus on laughter, love, excitement, and hope. Keep breathing in and out in this pattern until you feel better. If you practice the exercise often, you will notice wonderful changes in your outlook and in other aspects of your life.
I wish you well Rohit, you are now living a good life! Open your hands, your heart and your life to the abundance that awaits you ♥

I just wanted to thank you for all the insights and resources. I’ve been looking into problems of self expression for years- weirdly I am a (non professional) singer which has been both healing and extremely frustrating in equal measure. Very recently I stopped smoking as I felt very strongly that the smoke screen I was using was blocking access to true emotions and now I have a flood of feelings that are challenging to deal with. Additionally I have had an issue with my eyes for about 8 months- the right one looks dull but not always. This is the first article which has given me direct insight into how to heal myself. I am really grateful, thank you.
Hi Abi,
Thank you for your support and kind words, they are very much appreciated 🙂
It’s wonderful you’re able to sing! Singing brings out in us what we can’t normally bring out in every day life. It must be an incredible feeling to be able to bare your soul to people you’ve never met in a way that can make them understand so clearly what you mean.
Are you able to sing your darker feelings and emotions around loved ones, friends and family? Would they understand what you normally wouldn’t say about yourself and your life? If you can’t be yourself around these people, this will cause problems in the throat area.
Are you experiencing thyroid problems? Hypo or Hyper-thyroid?
Have you seen your doctor about your right eye? There is a small area at the back of your neck called the medulla oblongata. This tiny structure helps the nerves to communicate with the brain. When we’re feeling low or depressed, the medulla oblongata which also rules our respiration and circulation can become sluggish causing the muscles to contract around the eyes and ears. It might be of interest to you to investigate this and if you get an intuitive hit, to talk to your doctor about this.
As far as flooded emotions, these are usually suppressed, painful, emotional memories triggered by an outside source. Feelings and memories may be stimulated by listening to news reports about child abuse, hearing other people’s stories, interacting with your family, reading self-help books etc. Because feelings are triggered by sensations, they are never wrong, though not always pleasant. Do you have someone close that you could talk to about this and perhaps categorize or put all those flooded emotions into perspective?
I think you’ve been doing an excellent job getting to the source of your pain. Your body has opened a huge reservoir of feelings mainly because you’ve been listening to it. The body will do this when it’s finally able to let go of what’s been pulling it down.
I wish you well as you continue on your healing road.

Thank you so much for this.
I grew up feeling like I never knew what to say and really struggling with my expression and everything you are writing about. Now I’m experiencing problems with my parathyroids and lymph nodes in my neck and am trying to heal. I’ve done so much work on myself and this really shed light on pieces of the puzzle I didn’t know yet.
May I e-mail you?
Hi Angela,
Yes of course you can email me at ravenstarshealingroom@gmail.com
I really appreciate the time you took to write and comment on this blog. To help others understand the parathyroids and lymph system, let’s look at the throat chakra which is known to affect our immune and defense system, since it controls and energizes the lymphatic system which filters toxins and destroys them. But when our self-talk is degrading or not nourishing, the lymph glands in the neck area stagnate and the lymphocytes or white blood cells can’t do their job. When this happens the clear fluid of the lymph system turns milky or sometimes like cottage cheese affecting the thyroid and parathyroid glands.
The same goes when our self-esteem is threatened, the throat could go into spasm, causing the nerves to create stabbing pains coming from continually ‘getting it in the neck’. Extreme anxiety and uncertainty about talking out of turn can also cause severe tension/depression or irritability in this area.
If you suspect your parathyroids are affecting your calcium levels (osteoporosis, rheumatoid arthritis (fingers), muscles pain, kidney stones, broken bones) and metaphysically as well, ask your doctor for a parathyroid blood test and have your vitamin D levels checked as well.
Blessings,
ravenstar
This is such a wonderful writeup. I love the way you have connected the problems tontheir root causes and simple techniques to address the thyroid related problems. In a busy lifestyle, one tends to forget the simplest of activity -breathing.
Thanks for highlighting these details.
There is so much to explore and learn to heal our ownselves.
Thanks!!!!
Hi Ketki,
Thank you for your very kind and enthusiastic comment about how you this article resonated with you. And yes, there is so much to explore and learn. How interesting it is that when we want things to change that we’re suddenly catapulted into new patterns and possibilities.
Breathing certainly helps to get our energies flowing in the throat/thyroid area, it also helps to opens ourselves up and let down the barriers we created (years ago) as protection. It also helps to create a ‘sacred place’ where we feel nourished on the “inside”, because when we feel nourished/loved on the inside, we ‘will portray/project/shine’ that nourished feeling externally. This is about stepping into a place of “feeling worthy” and dispelling old patterns that have long out worn their usefulness.
We also need to stop caring so much about saying the right thing, and begin relaxing in who we genuinely are. Relaxing within not only build our confidence, it also releases our creativity. Relaxing and nourishing yourself on the inside, is the key to inner freedom and to allow our inner-child to be free and spontaneous!
Have a delightful and magical day!

Last week I was diagnosed with a nodule on the right lobe of my thyroid. Is there any way I can heal it ?. I am a 37 year man and in my childhood & teenage have witnessed my dad getting physically abusive with my mother and myself. Also on few occasions in childhood and teenage my father touched me inappropriately. I have harboured that resentment since childhood. Can you please guide me on how to heal myself and possibly it may lead to the nodule going away ?.
Hi Jehangir,
Thank you for commenting and being open and honest about your childhood past and if it relates to the diagnosis of the nodule on the right side of your thyroid.
When we develop a new symptom (nodule on right side of thyroid), we need to first check the six to nine months leading up to the onset of symptoms? What emotions were you experiencing? Was there a big change in your lifestyle? Excess stress or worry? A shift in financial circumstances? An accumulation of anger or frustration? From learning of the recent past we can then begin to look back further, to events from the distant past you may be carrying with you.
If I may ask, what did your doctor tell you about the nodule on your neck? Is it on the thyroid or was the nodule found on your parathyroid gland (parathyroid glands are found behind the thyroid and there’s 4 of them)?
Is the nodule benign (95% of these nodules are).
Has this nodule affected your thyroid? Do you suffer from hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism (these are detected by a blood test)?
Have you been tested for the Epstein Barr Virus (EBV)?
EBV was considered harmless until it was associated with an immune cell cancer (Burkitt’s lymphoma) that’s usually found in children. Once the Epstein-Barr virus enters the body, and triggers either full fledged mono or a sore throat and remains hidden in the B Cells (white blood cells or lymphocytes).
Metaphysically, viruses are known as ‘agents of change’. The main issue with viruses (and EBV) revolves around ‘fighting to hold back change due to poor self-esteem’ or trying to change the way others think of you’. In either case, the physical body becomes exhausted.
Most people who have contracted EBV are very sensitive. Outwardly, they appear happy and jovial, but deep down they are worried how others see them. A low self-esteem has been known to weaken the immune system. Worrying can also cause a great deal of anxiety.
Does your sensitivity frighten you and make you feel vulnerable or defenceless?
Is your creativity strangled or stifled by old beliefs, restrictions and expectations?
Can this lead to feeling anger, guilt and even stubborness?
Do you fear of speaking up for yourself (memories of being grasped by the throat muscles or by the scruff of the neck, effectively choking and throttling your individuality?
Do you dread speaking up out of the fear of possible consequences; of being ridiculed or perhaps upsetting others?
Are insecure about expressing your feelings? Does any self-expression tense your neck neck muscles, reducing its flexibility, causing a ‘real pain in the neck.’?
MASCULINE ENERGY (Right Side of Body)
When there are energy blocks on the right side of the body, explore whether they are connected to masculine energy issues such as protection, survival, assertiveness, manifestation, giving, logic, intellect, and power.
A father that is abusive physically and sexually, would affect your masculine side which may make an individual suppressed, withdrawn and unable to speak up for yourself. It’s possible you were not only bullied at home but also at school? Is this true?
Questions to ask the nodule on the right side (Masculine) of your thyroid..(some of these questions are similar to EBV) ..
Do I feel comfortable with aggression, anger or stating what I need in this world?
Can I speak out when something’s not right?
If something terrible happened would I express my anger?
Or do I suppress my feelings and excuse their actions?
Do I need to be stronger, more authoritative in my life?
Or do I need to be more tolerant in my life? Less critical?
Is my body exhausted because I ignored its message to slow down?
Or, does my life need more movement?
What needs to change?
Am I will to change?
This is one of the many stages to begin healing and strengthening your thyroid and throat chakra. Once you’ve answered the above questions, you will need to ask yourself again if you’re willing to change. If you are, then the 2nd step will begin through Awareness. Awareness begins with going within and looking at the many ups and downs of your life. It’s where you observe yourself, noticing your reactions, actions, and choices as if you were a detached viewer (like watching a movie).
Let me know if there’s more I can do to help…

Just learned I have thyroid cancer.
Hi Steve,
I’m so very sorry to know you’ve been diagnosed with thyroid cancer. It certainly must have been a shock to hear this, which must of caused you to search the net looking for answers. Possibly your first thought was to attack the problem straight on but the hand of fate brought you here. I hope some of what is written in this blog has helped you understand a little more about the metaphysics of the thyroid.
Illness has been known to be a great teacher because it forces us to learn more about why we think and act the way we do. It supports learning more about our habits, beliefs, patterns, fears, strengths, weaknesses, that developed from our childhood. It also encourages change, and discovering how to turn toxic situations into healthy ones.
Steve, along with a great health-team, there are some great self-help books for you to read and learn regarding your health. You have the power to heal yourself. Your physical body is designed to heal itself and to self-generate by creating new cells daily.
I wish you all the best on your healing journey,
Hugs,
ravenstar
